Its really not the critisim, my folks adore the fish and all but absolutely refuse to help me when it comes to cleaning, WC etc. In case i got out of town then feeding etc is taken care of by them but anything that takes more than a few seconds work is absolutely left to me. This is one of the reasons I have stopped at three tanks and dont think i can handle more. If I ask for help or anything they are like but are like this when guests appreciate the fish and tanks....any one else face this kind of stuff? |

Like Preeths, never a criticism. My dad loves to keep fish. He was the one who introduced me to the hobby. But age has its effects, and nowadays he is ok with it as long as I dont expect any help from him, even if I have to be away for a while. My mom is not against it either, but she definitely does not appreciate messing up her house during water changes or "wastefully" spending on such a useless hobby unlike keeping a dog, which atleast guards the house.
There was a time though when everything was going wrong no matter how well I took care of things. Then, any new fish i get would quickly meet with a, "how many days will this one live?" or a "more money down the drain". |

I got it from my father when I was running my Tanganiykan Setup. I had some Bichardies, Regani and Marliery. When he first saw the tank, he asked me...
Father: Why you are spending so much money on these colorless small fishes?
Me: Those are rare and not so common among hobbyiests in India.
Father: If you want to do R'nD with these ugly creatures go and do it at your backyard not in the drawing room.
Me: I told you, they are rare.
Father: I told you, your showtank placed at the drwaing room is not for the rare species like these. Throw them out and if you can't find something colorful, let me know. I will get you couple of Tilapia for this big tank.
I left the place scratching my head. |

My Mother and Father is very much against MTS. But they dont say much against the hobby or keeping fishes but only 1 thing.."All tanks must stay in your room. This is not a zoo". Ultimate result is bedroom come fishroom with more tanks than furniture.. only mentionable furnitures are bed, Steel Almirah and computer table.. rest are all multistoried fish racks with 10 tanks onboard.. |

No critiscm from my folks, they have been very supportive, its the neighbours who keep poking their noses in my buisness, they always say "aren't you too old to be keeping fishes, i think you should get married and think about future rather than washing fish tanks all day long"........ |

I got it from my parents during my school days. That time they always said - why are you wasting your pocket money on these things, from now onwards, you will not get any pocket money!
But I always got the pocket money from my Grand Parents & Uncles
I rember the day when I have been to Thailand for very first time.
When I told my Dad that I am going to Bangkok for 5-6 days. He simply asked, with whom & why?
My answer was : For a market reserch on Aquatic products & Live Stock! ....... and after that >> ....... |

The best comical criticism that i got was from my Nephew who is 5 yrs old. He looked at all my tanks including marine and went to my dad (His grandpa) and said "why is uncle spending so much money on such things that dont talk nor interact with me, it is not fun at all... he can might as well spend all the money on me buying chocolates and a PUG Dog so that i can talk and have fun with them". |

I have been an enthusiast since my childhood days. I had a 2 feet tank inside home and then a couple of large cement tanks in our compound. Like all others i spent all my pocket money on fishes ( Not much of gadgets were available then). After some time, the livestock levels became high and then i used to resort to trading with the LFS.
Then came employment in a different town. So the setup at home was wound up and i bought a 4" tank and had a few piranah and a couple to turtles in my flat where i was living alone. The hobby was pursued with all earnestness.
Then came marriage. My newly married wife refused to have fish inside the flat and that too in a large tank that took up so much space in a small flat. I held on to my hobby but unfortunately one day the tank developed a crack and all the water spilt over and the fishes died. This sounded the death knell to my hobby.
Its been nine years since then, i have returned with family to my home. I have been able to repair the cement tank at home and have a few barbs in that tank and also have a paid of jewel fish in my 2 feet tank. I have recently acquired a 4 feet tank and will be making it into a planted tank with tetras.
Thats pretty much the story till date. ( My wife still has her reservations and strong comments but my daughter aged 6 and son aged 1.5 are a great support to me.) |

I started this hobby with chi...chi...
My wife brought a bowl and 4 gold fishes, that time iam against fish keeping(lack of knowledge) cause they ll die.after three days all fishes died and my wife started crying.that time to keep her cool i brought a 2ft tank with 20 goldies .those also gone.my mother shouted me .But that time my curiosity went up y these fishes dying wats wrong(i was misguided by the LFS guy to put 20godies in 2ft tank).i thought i ll try with the harder one (again LFS guy misguided to buy Discus). i lost one discus out of 9.even i tried planted tank also again failed.
By experiments and study from internet i earned some knowledge.now iam maintaining 3 discus,1 angel,1 loach in 30x15x18 inch tank and 1 shark,1 koi in 2x1x1 feet tank from past 1 1/2 years without pain with love, affection and addiction.
mean while i learned alot fro IAH.
Thanks to IAH

Criticism from an unlikely quarter.
With twenty-two tanks most of them planted my electricity meter used to spin like a top.
It was at least three times more that the highest bill in my building and in the neighborhood.
This really confused the meter reader when he saw the meter spinning and when he came to know that I was a single occupant of the premises.
For several months he made a valiant attempt to figure it out, peeping here and there to no avail.
He knew that something fishy was going on. But he never for a moment thought of the Piscean variety. One day when the door was slightly ajar he barged into the house with a friendly “wow” only to be physically thrown out unceremoniously.
The Revenge.
The next month he came with another pal from the electricity department and they both threatened to convert the whole building into commercial. That is everyone pays three times more.
So the humble negotiations started by a sad faced me and it was finally agreed that I pay the duo a sum of Rs. 400/- per month as bribe.
The turnaround.
Fortunately I was able to record the entire conversation. They do not call me ‘shot gun Murugan’ with the camera for nothing. My small camera had a recording facility.
Needless to say the duo was not too pleased with the playback. Now it was my turn to threaten the duo. Resign or be sacked. The duo must have asked for a transfer and have never been seen since.
Epilogue:
Better sense prevailed over me and I now brought the number of tanks from twenty-two to four. |
