My  tank  cycling  is  going  since  8  weeks.  The  water  test  results  are  as  below:

 Sp.  gravity  :  1.025
 Ammonia:  Nil
 Nitrite  :  Nil
 Nitrate  :  16
 PH:  8.0

3  weeks  ago,  my  tank  had  brown  algae  problem  due  to  very  high  Nitrate  level  (Nitrate  >  100).  But  after  repeated  water  change  the  same  came  down  to  15-16  level.

Last  week  I  was  out  for  vacation  and  kept  timer  for  my  tank  lights  (1.7  wpg)  on  for  6  hours  a  day.

After  coming  back  I  found  that  the  tank  LRs,  gravels,  glass  surfaces  are  under  severe  attack  of  brown  algae.  Also,  there  are  patches  of  green  and  red  algae.

I  have  no  fish  yet  in  my  tank.  The  water  is   tested  and  the  results  are  found  same  with  nitrate  level  at  16.

Can  anybody  suggest  what  to  do?

@Amit,  for  those  algae  on  the  glass  use  any  of  your  old  credit  card  and  scrap  them  while  performing  water  change.  This  will  drastically  bring  it  down.  Also  you  can  use  tooth  brush  to  remove  if  you  have  any  hair/fuzz  algae.  Perform  some  frequent  water  changes.  I  haven't  seen  the  red  algae  so  far,  so  we  can  wait  for  the  masters  to  comment  on.

 Thanks  Ravi.

The  fromt  glass  stains  have  been  removed  by  magnetic  cleaner.  The  side  wall  stains  will  be  removed  as  suggested.  I  think  I  can  use  a  piece  of  soft  sponge  also.

Other  than  water  change,  is  there  any  precation  or  measure  I  may  have  to  take?  The  water  quality  (PH,  ammonia,  nitrite  &  nitrate)  is  not  so  bad.  Let  me  wait  for  the   comments  of  the  Masters.

 Cheers

Even  on  the  side  glass  you  can  use  the  sponge.  I  use  three  items  to  clean  the  algae  deposits  on  walls,  1)  sponge  cleaner  2)  credit  card  and  3)  scotch  brite   ROFL  Yes,  there  is  a  special  quality  of  scotch  brite  which  is  kind  of  rose/pink  in  color  with  very  soft  sponge  for  glass  surface.  I  use  any  of  these  things  to  scrape.  Let's  wait  to  hear  the  advices.

I  have  a  very  few  light  brownish  red  spots  on  the  front  &  right  side  glass  of  my  tank.  The  spots  are  a  mximum  of  10mm  in  diameter,  would  it  be  brown  algae?  I'm  into  6th  week  of  cycling  &   I  switch  on  the  lights  at  about  9.00  am  &  switch  them  off  at  around  7.00pm.  Is  that  adequate?
 Regards,
 Surya.

amit  the  water  changes  you  are  doing,  are  you  using  RO  water  or  Regular  water?  because  that  plays  a  major  role.

Also  try  a  sulphur   Denitratror.  Just  pass  the  water  through  a  cannister  containing  pure  sulphur.  But  be  sure  to  remove  the  sulphur  after  a  few  days  or  so...  you  will  see  a  drastic  drop  in  the  nitrate  levels.

The  best  way  to  control  the  nitrates  problem  is  to  grow  macro  alage  plants  in  the  sump...

I  use  RO  water  (about  25%  water  change  in  every  15  days).
Have  you  tried  Sulphur  denitrator?  Was  there  any  impact  of  sulphur  on  fishes/  LR/  Anemone?  How  long  you  have  used  Sulphur?

What  compound  the  Sulphur  forms  with  nitrate?

 Thanks

I  have  used  pure  sulphur  (yellowish  in  form)  for  a  short  period  in  my  phosban  reactor  that  i  have  made.  That  i  removed  about  in  3  wks  time  after  the  initial  high  nitrate  levels  while  cycling.

But  after  that,  only  phosban  with  Granular  Fe  hydroxide  to  eliminate  phospates  which  cause  more  problem..  t
