I  have  a  Canon  IS100  and  it  works  well  for  me.  My  friend  recently  got  an  AS590  and  it  too  is  just  as  good.  Only  reduced  zoom.

If  you  want  a  goood  compact  digital  camera  go  for  Canon  SD  880  IS.  This  camera  is  really  smaller  than  what  it  looks  in  the  photos,  reallly  small.   Check  out  the  review  in  www.dpreview.com.  It  will  set  you  back  by  280$  with  a  4GB  memory  card  from  Sandisk(If  your  friends  in  US  are  wiling  to  get  if  for  you).  I  am  not  sure  about  its  price  in  India.

Are  you  looking  for  p&S  specifically  ?  or  you  wouldn't  mind  a  SLR  in  that  budget  ?
 If  yes,
You  could  scrape  through  a  Nikon  D40  within  that  budget  if  you  could  order  it  from  US.
 Think  about  it.

 Hi,

@Rohan  -  No  contacts  in  US  currently,  and  need  to  take  one  a  bit  urgently..How  much  does  the  Nikon  D40  Kit  cost  locally..  any  idea....

@Aditya  -  Read  in  some  thread  here  that  the  sony  alpha  a200  is  not  compatible  with  most  of  the  lenses...and  technically  is  on  the  lesser  ground  compared  to  nikon  or  canon  entry  level  DSLR(i  know  its  mighty  cheap  compared  to  them  but  still....also  my  knowledge  of  cameras  is  really  meagre  so  correct  me  if  i  am  wrong....  ).Is  the  entire  camera  kit  upto  25k  or  only  its  body  and  the  lenses  need  to  be  bought  separately...Do  comment  if  it  has  any  pros  compared  to  H50  when  it  comes  to  image  quality  and  is  it  worth  the  addtional  5k  i  would  be  putting  in...would  the  image  quality  be  good  compared  to  the  H50  assuming  the  same  photography  skills...also  the  H50  has  a  carl  zeiss  lense...

Also  i  want  the  camera  to  be  really  easy  to  use  as  my  family  would  also  be  using  it  and  my  parents  wont  be  comfortable  with  all  the  technicalities  of  a  DSLR(but  can  be  compromised). After  reading  some  of  the  reviews  on  the  net  I  m  inclined  towards  picking  up  the  sony  H50....

Please  consider  the  above  points  and  let  me  know..

 Thanks,
 Omprakash

You  may  want  to  check  on  ebay.in  to  get  an  indicative  price  (without  warranty  etc.)
Or  even  on  JJMehta's  website  (  more  reliable  source).
Allthough  a  layman  the  can  always  use  advanced  cam  in  auto  mode  and  it  will  function  as  easy  as  any  compact  camera  but  I  do  agree  that  with  its  shape  and  size  it  may  be  daunting  for  a  layman.
I  personally  will  be  pained  to  spend  20k  on  a  p&S  camera  Smile
If  I  was  in  your  place  I  would  have  bought  a  P&S  of  not  more  than  150$  worth.
A  canon  powershot  A550  or  or  Nikon  Coolpix  L  series  or  likes  of  them  will  do  a  fine  job.
Save  the  money  for  rainy  days...

 Hi,

Wow  i  am  kind  of  confused  big  time  now,  just  read  the  review  of  sony  a200  and  on  dppreview  and  they  have  highly  recommended  it.....saw  the  sony  india  website  and  it  showing  a  price  of  around  25k  dont  know  if  its  only  for  the  body  or  the  entire  kit(not  mentioned  there),if  its  for  the  entire  kit  its  quite  a  deal...but  then  i  m  no  camera  freak   yet  and  dont  know  the  intricacies  of  a  DSLR..but  looks  like  a  good  entry  level  DSLR  for  a  newbie.

@Rohan  -  you  have  made  me  think  again...so  i  have  changed  my  mind  a  bit...will  either  go  for  the  a200,  or  a  cheaper  normal  P&S  camera...but  i  need  some  pointers  on  whether  the  a200  is  a  really  a  good  choice  or  not..waiting  for  Aditya  to  chip  in...

 Thanks,
 Omprakash

The  Sony  A200  is  available  for  Rs  24k  in  Pune.  This  is  with  the  18-70mm  kit  lens.  It's  a  pretty  good  buy.  However,  there  are  a  few  noise  issues  at  slightly  higher  ISO  ratings  with  that  camera.
Pros  :  In  built  camera  stabilisation
Cons  :  No  third  party  lenses  yet.  Sony  and  Zeiss  lenses  aren't  exactly  cheap.  The  older  Minolta  lenses  work,  but  have  problems  in  auto  focusing  at  times

Having  said  that,  a  DSLR  over  any  Point  and  Shoot  is  a  no  brainer.  You  don't  need  to  be  technically  proficient  to  use  the  Auto  mode  Wink
And  you  can  learn  new  things  everyday  with  a  DSLR!
If  you  can  manage  to  carry  the  extra  bulk  and  are  not  planning  on  buying  additional  lenses,  the  A200  is  the  camera  for  you!!

P.S  :  You  can  also  have  a  look  at  the  Canon  EOS1000D  and  the  Nikon  D40x  which  are  available  for  the  same  price  (~25k)  in  the  grey  market.

 Very Happy

Actually,  Rohan,  you  would  be  quite  mistaken.  I  use  the  Panasonic  FZ8  which  I  picked  up  for  about  12K  a  year  ago.  I  would  call  it  a  gem.  But  the  real  credit  to  its  capabilities  (still/video)  came  when  my  friend  who  is  a  hardcore  wildlifer  like  me,  ditched  his  Nikon  D70s  and  lenses  and  is  picking  up  the  Panasonic  FZ28.

Here's  one  picture  from  it.  (FZ8)

 @  Suraj

I  do  agree  that  some  top  end  P&S'  are  awesome  and  almost  as  good  as  an  entry  level  DSLR.  But  the  joy  of  owning  a  DSLR,  swapping  lenses,  playing  around  with  the  innumerable  manual  controls,  scores  of  accessories  &  having  a  much  larger  sensor,  etc.  are  features  that  no  P&S  can  match.

And  btw,  I  guess  Rohan  has  a  top  of  the  line  Canon  P&S  too.

I  love  this  article  by  Gordon  Layne  which  is  a  great  help  for  someone  who  cant  choose  between  a  DSLR  and  a  P&S  camera
