No  there  is  no  typo  error   Smile  ......  most  of  the  wild  bettas  are  smaller  in  sizes  as  compare  to  the  other  fishes. The  biggest  of  the  family  would  be  from  the  same  unimaculata  group  with  some  ranging  from  4  -  5  inches. But  the  unimac  above  in  the  photo  is  merely  about  6cm  in  size  ...  ie  a  young  adult.

Beta's  simorum  is  a  giant.  The  one  in  his  avatar.

BTW,  great  pics  and  great  fish  you  have.  Hope  to  join  hands  soon.   Thumb Up

Shankar  if  you  think  Simorum  is  a  giant,  try  and  lay  your  hands  on  some  Betta  pi.  They  are  such  massive  fish  you  will  be  really  amazed.  Rock On

Shankar  is  right  ......  simorum  is  the  largest  in  the  bubblenesters  group.I  have  caught  and  kept  a  few  of  the  larger  bettas  like  ibanorum(6  inches)  and  hipposidorus(5.5  inches)  and  macrostoma  (6  inches). But  i  noticed  one  thing  .....  the  larger  ones  are  actually  the  older  aged  ones. As  such  for  beauty  and  breeding  purposes, the  above  average  sizes  will  do  for  me  Smile  Nikhil, any  luck  in  breeding  the  pi???

 Hi  Shankar,

The  one  in  the  avatar  looks  more  like  a  smaragdina  to  me.Simorum  looks  more  like  betta  bellica.  Smile

The  above  one  is  simorum  and  is  a  wild  one.  Don't  remember  the  exact  locality;  need  to  check  old  bills.  :  )

He  does  have  smaragdina  too.  Should  be  F2  or  above.

Here  is  the  wild  smaragdina  pair,  pictured  on  arrival,  being  acclimated  to  hard  and  alkaline  Chennai  water.

Both  the  species  looked  distinctively  different  to  me.   Smile

 Hi  Shankar,

Yup  thats  (the  photo  above)  is  a  simorum  .....  I  was  actually  referring  to  Venkat's  avatar  .....  On  second  thoughts  .....  looks  more  like  imbellis  too.  Smile   Chuckle   The  simorum  from  Indonesia  is  collected  from  Jambi  area.I  have  some  as  well  ...  and  the  fish  was  named  after  Thomas  G.  K.  Sim,  proprietor  of  Sindo  Aquarium  Pte.  Ltd,Singapore.

I  am  quiet  disappointed  with  some  of  the  smarags  that  we  buy  from  Thailand  nowadays. This  is  because  i  doubt  about  their  purity. There  has  been  a  lot  of  interesting  discussion  on  this  on  the  other  forums. The  crosses  between  splenden  or  other  fancy  bettas  to  produced  fighter  quality  or  beautiful  colored  fish  has  made  this  type  less  appealing  to  myself. The  same  goes  to  the  mahachai  species.

 Hi  Headbanger_jib,

Yes  the  macs  are  the  all  time  favourite  among  collectors  and  still  going  strong  Thumb Up  .And  many  aquarist  all  over  the  world  are  successfully  breeding  them  now.Thats  a  good  sign  Cheering  Sometimes  i  wonder  whether  they  are  still  placed  under  the  Red  List  ie  fishes  that  are  in  danger  of  getting  extinct.I  think  somebody  needs  to  revise  the  list  now  Chuckle

Regarding  the  intense  blue  ......  the  feeling  is  more  dramatic  if  you  can  see  the  fish  live.Apart  from  the  ocellata(which  some  people  confuse  with  the  unimac),the  metallic  color  of  the  unimac  is  so  vivid.Funny  it  maybe, one  of  my  son  called  this  fish  the  Metallica  fish!!!  ROFL

 Hi  Ravindran,

The  fishkeeping  hobby  is  one  part  while  the  photography  compliments  the  later  ........  In  my  opinion, its  better  to  have  both  Smile  .I  find  it  worthwhile  to  capture  and  share  those  precious  moments  as  part  of  our  learning  process  in  keeping  these  wonderful  species. These  photos  will  be  what  others  may  enjoy  long  after  when  the  fish  is  no  longer  here  Smile

 Hi  Beta,

Yes  .....  i  have  seen  the  simorum  in  your  avatar. That  is  a  brilliant  pic  of  a  healthy  simorum.Any  spawn  from  this?  Very Happy  My  simorum  is  housed  together  with  the  pi,hipposidorus, ibanorum, bellica, pugnax  and  others.Space  is  a  problem  nowadays  Chuckle

Unfortunately..  I  only  have  a  male  with  me  for  the  last  2  years.  The  female  jumped  the  day  after  I  got  them.
I  was  hoping  that  Nikhil  could  get  me  the  Simorum's  but  doesn't  look  like  he  had  any  luck.

 Hi  Haji,

I  was  just  referring  to  the  size,  didnt  have  the  bubblenesters  in  mind.  No  luck  with  the  Betta  pi  as  yet  as  they  are  just  juvies.  Yes  heard  a  lot  about  the  splendens  being  released  into  the  wild  by  people.  Hoping  to  lay  my  hands  on  wild  Splendens  someday.  Still  have  a  lot  of  fish  to  finish  breeding  and  then  move  to  new  ones.  I  am  attaching  pics  of  the  male  and  female  Betta  strohi  that  i  had  got  to  India,  unfortunately  the  male  didnt  survive  so  will  get  some  when  i  come  down  next.

 Regards

Beta  i  have  managed  to  get  4  Simorum's  they  are  with  Venkat  in  Mumbai.  I  think  after  he  gets  a  couple  of  pairs  out  of  them  then  you  can  have  a  pair,  its  always  better  to  spread  them  around  after  they  pair  up.  Hopefully  i  will  be  able  to  send  fish  more  often  from  Glasgow.
