 @Prem:  nice  looking  tank

just  a  query......if  i  grow  that  cuba  stuff  emersed  and  when  it  catches  growth  and  speread  out  then.....once  i  fill  the  entire  tank  with  water....what  all  things  will  be  needed  to  take  care  of  it...i  have  heard  that  it  is  one  hell  of  a  finicky  plant???  i  am  planning  for  a  1  cubic  feet  nano  tank.  with  ADA  soil.  how  much  will  the  soil  cost.  i  guess  asking  the  cost  will  not  be  an  issue  as  ADA  is  a  sponsor(atleast  that  is  what  i  have  percieved  from  other  threads,  please  correct  me  if  i  am  wrong.)....how  much  will  be  enough  for  1  cubic  feet  tank.....i  am  planning  only  ADA  soil......this  will  be  a  HC  tank  with  rocks(i  sound  like  a  copycat  ROFL  ).  but  i  will  add  an  extra  tree  shaped  driftwood  with  christmass  moss  on  it(again  a  copycat  ROFL  )......
how  are  you  getting  the  lights  in  when  you  have  covered  it  with  cooking  foil  Confused  ????

I  personally  have  not  tried  growing  it  submersed  and  this  is  my  first  attempt.
What  I  have  learned  is  that,  the  only  difference  between  submerged  and  emerged  growth  is  the  gas  exchange  which  can  be  compensated  by  pumping  in  more  co2  than  normal  for  the  frist  three  weeks.

It  is  also  recommended  to  do  two  major  water  changes  on  the  same  day  we  fill  in  the  tank  with  water  after  the  emersed  growth  period  to  ensure  all  the  muck  is  removed.

I  am  also  parallely  running  a  filter  in  my  6  footer  to  ensure  the  beneficial  bacteria  is  formed  which  later  i  will  transfer  to  my  4  foot  afer  filling  in  the  water.  Moreover  the  substrate  will  also  have  the  beneficial  bacteria  established  in  the  meanwhile.

One  another  point  is  that  after  4  weeks  we  need  to  plant  densely  enough  to  combat  algae.

Use  the  below  link  to  calculate  the  amount  of  ADA  substrate  to  be  used.

When  transferring  from  an  emersed  set  up  to  a  submersed  one,  pumping  in  more  co2  and  maintaining  the  same  30  ppm  will  make  life  easier,  as  Camy  rightly  said  about  the  gas  exchange  ratios.
Another  thing  to  keep  in  mind,  Excel  works  wonders  with  HC  Cuba.

 Hi  Prem,

That  is  a  phenomenal  growth  in  the  HC.  IMO,  you  could  top  the  water  to  the  level  of  the  lower  level  of  HC  so  that  there  is  an  emersed  growth  on  the  higher  level  and  in  the  mean  time  the  lower  HC  will  get  used  submersed  growth.

 All  the  best!

 Regards,
 Surya

Thanks  everyone.  I  hope  and  wish  the  carpet  forms  soon.

Surya  -  The  HC  at  the  rear  part  of  the  tank  died  due  to  insufficeinte  water.  Tom  did  mention  that  the  HC  at  the  mounds  will  do  well  but  mine  did  not.  I  anyway  did  not  plan  to  have  HC  fully  in  the  tank.  Will  need  to  keep  that  space  to  plant  heavily  to  combat  algae.

Moreover  if  I  have  to  grow  it  submersed  then  i  will  have  algae  issues  and  whole  lot  of  other  things  to  battle  out.  I  will  let  the  foreground  fill  in  and  let  the  roots  take  a  good  hold  and  will  fill  in  water  and  plant  heavily.

 HI  Prem,

Sorry  to  hear  that  .  IMO,  as  there  has  been  good  growth  ,  you  could  fill  the  tank  now  and  pump  in  excess  co2  to  have  the  HC  grow  at  the  same  pace  submersed.  Before  this  you  could  trim  a  little  from  the  emmersed  and  plonk  it  on  the  barckground.

Waiting  to  see  the  future  of  this  tank.  Good  Luck!

 Regards,
 Surya

 Sundar  Sir!
I  plan  to  have  lot  of  stem  plans  to  begin  with  to  combat  algae  in  a  new  setup,  almost  any  plant  that  I  can  lay  my  hands  on.  At  a  later  stage  I  am  looking  to  have  Hemanthius  Micranthemoides,  Blyxa  Japonica  and  Rottalla  Macranda.
