 Dear  All,

I  am  planning  for  a  18L  X  18H  X  12D  tank  with  full  of  plants.  I  will  use  substrate  and  liquid  fertilizer  with  CO2  from  pressurised  cylinder.  But  kindly  suggest  the  wattage  of  CFL  lamp  required  for  good  plant  growth,  and  for  how  long  will  I  have  to  keep  them  on.

 Thanks.
 Deba.

 hi  deba

Why  do  you  want  to  use  CFL?  try  out  a  PLL  instead.  You  get  it  in  36W/18W  it  needs  an  external  ballast.  This  will  be  a  far  better  option  to  use  then  a  CFL,  plants  will  certainly  do  better  with  PLLs.

CFL  is  also  available  at  36  watt.  I  think  both  CFL  and  PLL  gives  the  same  light  one  is  without  the  built  in  ballast  and  the  other  has  the  ballast  in  it.

Deba  I  would  request  you  to  go  thru  this  link  before  you  decide  on  your  lighting.  This  link  has  some  interesting  discussion  on  lighting  and  should  answer  your  queries:

 http://indianaquariumhobbyist.com/community/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=12337&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15

Please  note  that  more  than  wattage  you  should  concentrate  on  kelvin,  colour  spectrum  etc.

Blue  coloured  CFL  doesnot  mean  Blue  spectrum  always.  Go  for  Osram  PLLs.  There  are  a  few  5000  K  and  6500  K  models.  Look  into  the  spectrum  range,  there  should  be  good  amount  of  red  and  blue

What  the  problem  with  cfl  guys?  Thay  r  doing  just  as  well  as  pll  as  I've  seen  in  my  friends  houses.

I'm  having  a  36wt  pll,  but  now  will  add  this  with  a  14wt  cfl..anybody  can  explain  why  pll  is  better  than  cfl.  I'll  use  6500K  cfl.  So  what's  the  problem.

Avik.....  if  the  height  of  the  tank  is  more  than  a  feet,  Enough  lights  of  CFL  will  not  reach  to  the  bottom.  But  PLL  is  having  better  penetration  power  than  CFL.

penetration  power  I  can  calculate  from  lumin  na?

Please  explain  how  can  I  know  which  lamp  is  better,a  more  lumin  lamp  or  a  low  lumin  lamp.  In  particular,  how  can  I  understand  which  lamp  has  more  penitration  power?

There  r  osram, philips  and  many  other(atleast  4-5other)brand's  pll  r  readily  available  at  kolkata,  how  to  chose  from  them.

You  can't  say  hich  one  has  more  penetration  power  without  proper  instruments.  So  surf  the  net  to  know  the  exact  technical  analysis  of  CFL  and  PLL.

You  can  pick  up  any  good  brand  6500K  PLL.

 Hi  Avik...

There  are  two  types  of  CFL  (Compact  Fluorescent  Lamp)

 Integrated  CFLs
Integrated  lamps  combine  a  tube,  an  electronic  ballast  and  either  an  Edison  screw  or  bayonet  fitting  in  a  single  CFL  unit.

 Non-integrated  CFLs
Non-integrated  CFLs  have  a  separate,  replaceable  bulb  and  a  permanently  installed  ballast.  These  ballasts  are  typically  of  the  magnetic  type,  and  the  starter  is  housed  in  the  base  of  the  replaceable  bulb.  Since  the  ballasts  are  placed  in  the  light  fixture  they  are  larger  and  last  longer,  compared  to  the  integrated  ones.

Non-integrated  CFL  housings  are  more  expensive  and  sophisticated.

A  typical  CFL  is  in  the  range  of  17  to  21%  efficient  at  converting  electric  power  to  radiant  power,  the  luminous  efficacy  of  CFL  sources  is  typically  60  to  72  lumens  per  watt.

So  you  can  use  any  type  of  CFL  Intregrated  or  Non-Intregrated

For  which  will  have  more  penetration  power  and  which  will  be  good  for  plants  you  have  to  see  the  Colour  Spectrum,  Lumens,  Radiant  Power  of  the  Lamp  -  CFL  Intregrated  or  Non-Intregrated.  So  to  say  which  one  is  better  cannot  be  justified  with  out  the  lighting  parameters  in  question.

PLL  is  term  initially  used  by  Philips  for  the  NON  Intregrated  CFL,  PL  =  Philips  Lamp  ,  L  =  L  Long  Fluorescent  Lamps  so  PL-L  =  Philips  PL-L,  ¬†Philips  Long  Fluorescent  Lamps  which  is  nothing  but  a  Non  intregrated  CFL.  ¬†Now  because  the  PL-L  is  longer  than  length,  that  way  they  can  cover  a  longer  length  of  the  aquarium  and  has  thus  an  advantage.

 Regards

 Sujoy

R  u  my  known  Sujoyda?  Smile

Anyway,  I  understand  the  technical  part,  but  kindly  put  some  more  light  on  integrated  cfl,  should  I  take  one  with  higher  lumen, higher  kelvin  rating?  That's  all.  If  a  non  integrated  and  an  integrated  CFL  have  the  same  parameters,  or  in  case  the  integrated  cfl  has  more  ratings  for  everything..should  not  it  better?

And  I  have  36wt  pll  in  my  16g  tank,  now  I  want  to  add  some  more  light  on  the  back  side  for  the  red  plants(I'll  put  some  soon).

 Suggestions.

 Deba

PLLs  are  also  CFL  lamps,  CFL  is  a  general  terminology  to  represent  these  type  of  triphosphore  high  intensity  efficients  lamps.

PLL  stands  for  PHASED  LOCKED  LOOP  which  utilises  an  external  electronic  ballast  only  for  current  frequency  control.  It  utilises  4  pins  in  holder.

There  are  other  technologies  also  CCFL  (Cold  Cathod  Flurocent  Lamp)  ,  PLC  (Programmed  Logic  Control),   etc.

However  it  does  not  matter  what  bulbs  are  you  using;  essentially  all  are  triphosphor  flurocent  lamps  and  can  produce  your  desired  result  depending  on  spectrum  and  intensity.

A  lamp  will  appear  more  bright  aka  more  lumen  if  its  spectrum  covers  a  large  amount  of  its  light  distribution  in  green  range.  But  plants  donot  utilise  the  light  frequency  in  green  range,  so  lumen  is  important  for  brightness  and  appreance  for  the  aquarium  but  not  relevant  to  plant  growth  requirement.  Human  eyes  respond  more  to  the  green  spectrum,  hence  normal  commercial  bulbs  aredesigned  accordingly

Plants  tubes  like  OSRAM  Floura  emits  its  light  spectrum  in  red  and  blue  zone  with  very  little  spread  in  green,  so  they  appear  very  dim  and  pinkish.  But  plants  can  grow  very  well  under  these  types  of  lamps.  So  just  do  not  go  for  higher  lumen  ratings  only

I  suggest  you,  choose  full  spectrum  bulbs  like  OSRAM  954  PLLs  or  Biolux  FL.

Hope  this  will  help  you  to  choose  your  bulbs.

 Regards
 Rana

 Hi

To  add  a  few  more  details  to  what  has  already  been  mentioned  an  integrated  CFL  was  made  to  replace  incandescent  bulbs,  the  wattage  ratios  one  sees  on  the  box  is  compared  to  a  bulb  not  a  tube  light.  also  With  intergrated  CFLs  these  were  not  made  to  run  in  moisture  laiden  enviorments,  they  will  detoriate  quickly  over  short  time  spans  as  moisture  does  get  into  the  ballast  electronics.

The  general  Lm/watt  ratio  for  an  integrated  CFL  is  arround  50  -  60  and  that  of  a  pll  is  arround  65-75  lm/watt.
 Hope  this  helps!!
