I  think  the  subject  of  De-Worming  in  Discus  had  mentioned  many  times  in  this  Forum  ,  you  can  search  and  read  them  ,  every  one  had  his  own  view  and  understanding  on  this  subject  .

Very  first  one  has  to  understand  what  is  De-Worming  ?

Actually  De-Worming  is  the  loose  word  used  for  eliminating  intestinal  parasites  such  as  flagellates  ,  capillaries  or  tapeworms  etc.

For  intestinal  worms  like  Capillaria  ,  tapeworms  :  These  worms  are  rare  in  discus  and  very  rarely  needs  the  treatments  .  Good  med  are  Mebendazole  ,  Praziquantel  (  droncit)   ,  flubenol.

Flagellates  :  In  discus  one  has  to  take  care  of  flagellates  ,  especially  young  discus  ,  which  eats  more.   So  in  short  one  has  to  do  De-Flagellating  .  So  for  flagellates  (  eg  hexamita  ,  Spirononucleus  )  Metronidazole  is  good  .

I  have  observed  that  different  people  have  different  view  and  different  ways  of  De-  Flagellating.  I  am  listing  few  cases  just  for  the  explaination  .

 1)  Never  Ever  :  There  are  few  hobbiest  /  Breeders   who  have  been  keeping  discus  for  many  years  but  have  never  ever  De-Worm  their  Discus  .  As  per  them  there  is  no  problem  with  their  discus  .
 2)  Only  when  they  find  problem  with  their  discus  .  :  There  are  people  who  attend  to  this  problem  when  they  find  white  shit  or  their  discus  stop  eating  .
 3)  Always  :    There  are  few  ,  who  put  Metro  or  Garlic  in  BHM  on  regular  basis  and  feed  daily  to  their  discus  .
 4)  Regular  Basis  :  Few  De-Flagellates  their  discus  on  regular  basis  (  Monthly  ,  Quaterly  etc  )

In  case  no  2  when  Discus  stop  eating  ,  the  case  may  go  out  of  your  hand  ,  because  your  discus  is  not  eating  .  your  metro  treatment  will  be  not  that  effective  .

Case  no  3  is  very  dangerious  because  administrating  Metro  (  has  antibiotic  properties  )  daily  ,  certain  bacteria  will  get  immunie  to  it  and  when  you  realy  want  to  elliminate  bacteria  your  antibiotic  will  not  work  .  So  never  to  add  Metro  in  feed  for  daily  feeding  .

In  my  opinion  it  is  better  to  De-Flagellates  your  discus  on  regular  basis  .  I  do  that  on  quaterly  basis  .

 Dosage  for  regular  De-flagellating  :

Earlier  i  used  to  give  heavy  dose  of  1.5gm  for  100gm  BHM  for  5  days  and  also  in  water  (  1.5  gm  for  100  ltrs  )  .  but  when  I  realise  that  Metro  has  got  Anti-biotic   properties  I  now  give  12  days  course  with  mild  dose  on  regular  basis  (  Quaterly  )  I  don't  wait  for  the  problem  to  come  and  then  to  start  the  treatment  .

Metronidazole  @  400  mg  to  1  kg  BHM  and  feed  3  times  a  day  for  12  days  .  It  is  better  to  increase  the  tank  water  temp  during  the  course  .

There  are  also  some  ready  made   De-Worming  med  available  in  the  market  which  can  be  used  as  per  manufacturers  reccomendation.

 Thanks

 Hi  Shiva,

Many  many  thanks  for  your  write  up.

It's  really  a  nice  clean  write  up  which  I  am  looking  for.  In  your  write  in  1st  paragraph  what  u  written  that   "I  think  the  subject  of  De-Worming  in  Discus  had  mentioned  many  times  in  this  Forum  ,  you  can  search  and  read  them  ,  every  one  had  his  own  view  and  understanding  on  this  subject."  ...I  have  seen  few  not  clear  like  this.  Thanks  again.

Now  my  Question  is  what  will  be  my  dose  for  70  Gallon  &  30  Gallon  Tank  !!

Also  I  don't  use  BH.  I  feed  Tetra  Bits,  Hikari  Biogold  for  Discus  &  Azoo  for  Discus.

 Regards

Metro  works  well  when  discus  takes  it  inside  through  food  .  In  water  you  need  to  add  bigger  dose  and  after  8  hrs  Metro  is   ineffective  in  water  and  you  need  to  redose  again  .

Since  your  discus  are  eating  only  tetra  bits  ,  HiKari  Bio  Gold   ,  why  don't  you  try  Readymade  Discus  Dewormer  food  similar  to  tetra  bits  ,  I  think  the  main  ingrediants  in  this  is  Metro  .

 Regards

 Hello  Shiva,

I  try  for  Discus  De-Worming  food  as  per  your  suggestion.  But  I  didn't  find  it.

One  food  perhaps  I  will  get.  They  said  it's  Tetra  Ruby  CRISP....I  don't  know  about  this...

So  let  me  know  what  should  I  do  about  De-Worming  of  my  Discus....

 Regards

 Abhi  ,

Since  you  have  planted  tank  and  you  feed  only  tetra  bits  ,  you  can  try  the  below  .

Dissolve  Metro  in  Luke  warm  water  (  in  a  cup  )  .  400  mg.
Soak  Tetra  bits  in  this  solution  for  15  minutes  .
Remove  these  tetra  bits  and  feed  to  you  discus  for  10-  12  days  ,  feed  as  much  as  they  consume  within  15  minutes  .  Don't  over  feed  .
Every  day  prepare  fresh  solution  of  Metro  .

hope  above  method  helps  you  .

 Thanks

Metor  means  Metrozyl  !!  And  what  u  mean  by  "Luke  Warm  water"

Metro  is  short  name  for  Metronidazole  .  Metrogyl  ,  flagyl  etc  are   trade  name   ,  all  these  contains  Metro  which  is  effective  against  flagellates  .

Metro  doesn't  dissolve  well  in  cold  water  ,  hence  to  dissolve  them  well  ,  it  is  better  to  make  them  powder  and  put  it  in  little  warm  water  (  not  too  Hot  )  .
