 Now  that  you  asked,
I  don't  really  know  if  they  are  eating  algae  or  just  scavenging  of  the  floor,  before  introducing  them,  the  edges  of  my  tank{i  mean  the  edges  where  the  silicon  sealant  is  used}  used  to  have  kind  of  a  dirt  filled  look.
After  introducing  them,  it  has  turned  back  to  white  again  !
And  the  CAE  always  seem  to  clean  up  the  aquarium  floor  really  well  !
I  have  personally  never  seen  it  come  up  to  eat  the  pellets  !

Initially  they  will  live  on  left  out  foods  and  then  they  will  be  waiting  for  the  feeding  time.  I  saw  them  chasing  other  fishes  to  keep  them  away  from  food.

From  my  limited  knowledge  of  keeping  them,  they  are  not  good  algae  eaters  ....  if  they  get  hooked  onto  fish  food,  then  you  can  forget  about  them  touching  algae  again.

@  Sean,  coming  to  your  question,  would  suggest  you  go  with  Ottos  instead  of  CAE.

There  could  be  an  underlying  problem  as  to  why  your  Ottos  are  dying,  solve  that  before  it  gets  the  other  fish  as  well.

Please  give  the  below  details  of  your  tank  for  starters

 1)  Size?
 2)  Time  it  has  been  running  for?
 3)  Filter  you  are  using  along  with  the  media  details?
 4)  Frequency  of  water  change?
 5)  Is  there  chlorine  in  the  water  you  use?

 Hi,
Chinese  algae  eater  eats  everything  but  the  algae.
introduce  some  siamensis.  they  eat  algae  some  times.
They  will  surely  eat  the  algae  if  kept  hungry  but  thats  next  to  impossible  if  you  have  other  fish.
I  am  facing  the  same  issue.
But  I  have  seen  them  eating  algae  sometimes.
 regards
