PostPosted: Sun Mar 08, 2009 5:28 pm Post subject: Query regarding coral sand for my cichlid tank Reply with quote

 Hi  guys,

I  have  a  cichlid  set  up  housing  a  variety  of  cichlids  like  convicts  (a  breeding  pair),  Kenyii,  yellow  labs,  a  severum,  a  jewel  cichlid  and  a  pair  of  clown  loaches.  Currently  i  have  small  rock  stones  sized  gravel  but  i  am  planning  for  a  change  in  the  landscape  by  using  a  lighter  coloured  and  finer  gravel  that  the  cichlids  can  dig  easily.

I  am  informed  by  many  LFS  guys  that  coral  sand  would  work  well  with  cichlids  and  i  read  the  same  over  the  net  too.  But  an  expert  suggested  that  i  should  go  for  something  like  golden  sand  instead  of  coral  sand  as  he  said  that  a  coral  sand  set-up  will  need  daily  water  changes  (I  do  a  weekly  40  %  water  change  over  the  weekend).  He  says  that  such  setups  work  in  LFS  because  they  do  daily  changes  else  it  might  be  unstable  for  the  fishes.

 My  questions  are:
 1.  Does  a  coral  sand  set-up  need  daily  water  changes  to  maintain  PH  value  that  would  be  ideal  for  cichlids?
 2.  Will  coral  sand  affect  my  clown  loaches  in  any  way?

I  would  prefer  to  go  for  coral  if  it  doesn't  cause  any  problems  for  my  fishes,  as  budget  is  not  a  constraint.  Experts  pls  advice.

 Thanks.

 hi,
i  used  coral  sand  in  my  cichlid  setup  for  about  a  year.  never  faced  any  problems.  did  my  water  change  the  weekends  though.  the  only  problem  i  had  was  regarding  the  sharp  edges  that  coral  sand  has.  the  edges  do  cut  up  the  mouth  of  the  fishes  initially.
you  can  also  try  using  seived  construction  sand.  works   just  fine.  the  cichlids  also  love  to  go  through  the  sand  and  it  poses  no  problems  for  them.
however  like  i  said  if  budget  is  not  a  problem  then  coral  sand  has  no  issues.  try  getting  one  on  the  finer  side  and  not  he  bid  grain  one.

Good  question.  Well,  yes.  Mine  were  the  most  unhappy  fish  on  the  substrate.  Couldn't  see  them  with  bruises  all  over  the  body.

Thanks  guys.  For  the  sake  of  my  fav  loaches,  i  might  have  to  stick  to  common  sand.  Or  move  them  to  my  smaller  tank.  But  i  can  conclude  safely  that  coral  sand  does  no  damage  to  cichlids  rite?  Anyone  faced  any  water  quality  problems,  pls  share  with  the  rest  of  us.

i  never  tested  my  water  but  i  got  my  parrots  to  breed  and  other  fishes  grew  very  well.  so  i  guess  water  quality  was  good.  if  you  are  doing  water  chahges  evey  week  and  have  good  filteration  then  i  guess  it  wont  be  a  problem.  i  had  yoyo  loach  and  zebra  loach  in  coral  sand  setup.  never  had  any  problems  with  them  and  coral  sand.  never  kept  clown  loach  with  coral  sand  so  i  cant  really  comment.

I   think  aragonite  is  also  good  option  for  cichlid  setup.i  have  seen  people  using  them  without  any  problems  .

 Dear  Binesh
Instead  of  Coral  sand  you  can  use  aragonite  which  is  very  suitable  for  African  rift  lakes  set  up.  Im  using  it  for  the  last  8  years  without  any  problems.  Coral  sand  is  to  good  for  the  same  because  one  of  my   friend  also  using  it  for  the  last  3  years.Dont  worry  about  the  higher  pH  the  cichlids  acclimatizes  themselfs  when  there  any  change  occurs.  As  far  as  Clown  are  concern  they  are  smart  enough  to  acclimatize  themself.  So  go  ahead  without  any  doubt.
 Regards
 Kaushik

Thanks  Kaushik,  Vardesh  and  Kunal.  I  will  explore  the  option  of  aragonite  as  well.
