A  small  bit  of  advice  for  new  comers.   If  you  decide  to  get  your  feet  wet,  as  long  as  you  are  in  water  you  won't  feel  anything,  once  you  get  into  the  car  around  late  noon,  i  bet,  you  will  know  what  hunger  is.   So  its  always  a  good  idea,   not  to  get  too  enthusiastic  and  people  esp.  who  demand  food  in  time,  BEWARE!!!   And  once  you  get  a  full  belly,  thats  the  end.   So  try  to  know  your  limitations  and  balance  your  energy  levels.

A  word  of  caution.  The  importance  of  proper  water  proof  footwear.

Most  of  the  good  scenic  biotopes  will  have  broken  beer  bottles.   Broken  bottles  under  the  water  are  impossible  to  see.

This  photo  was  taken  on  our  May  2005  trip.  A  hobbyist  stepped  on  a  broken  bottle  and  got  a  deep  cut  which  was  bleeding  profusely.  It  required  stitches  and  the  nearest  doctor  was  miles  away.

Dizzy  from  the  loss  of  blood  and  the  extreme  heat.  His  friends  console  him.

 Okay  guys  looking  at  accomodation:

Nayak  is  trying  to  put  us  up  all  in  a  friends  farm  house.  If  there  are  too  many  of  us  or  it  is  not  possible  due  to  some  other  constraints,  then  it  will  be  hotels  in  Shimoga.

Looking  at  hotels  which  should  cost  Rs.900  or  thereabouts  for  a  double  room,  don't  know  how  many  rooms  can  be  booked  yet.

Please  update  your  coming  on  the  trip  here  on  this  thread  by  31st  March,  to  finalise  numbers.
If  hotel  stay,  bookings  will  be  made  against  prepayment  of  room  charges.   Smile

Slight  change  in  the  route  to  accomodate  Tirthahalli,  distance  will  remain  about  the  same.

The  Route:  Depart  Bangalore,  Yeshwantpur  Metro,  0500  hrs  11th  April  2009

Bangalore  -  Nelamangala   -  Tumkur   -  Nittur  -  Doddaguni  -  Tiptur  -  Kadur  Expect  to  see  some  fish  from  this  stretch  onwards.
 -  Chikmanglur  ETA  Chikmanglur  0900  Hrs  Breakfast.  Distance  Travelled

Chikmanglur  -  Aldur  -  Sangameshwarpet  -  Balehonnur  -  Sollebail  -  Koppa  -  Tirthahalli  -  Malur  -  Mandagadde  -  Shimoga  Night  halt.  Distance  travelled

Depart  Shimoga  0600  Hrs  12th  April  2009  and  Follow  Tungabhadra
Shimoga  -  Holalur  -  Chillur  -  Honnali  (turn  off  and  away  looking  for  water  bodies  to  Bangalore  )  -  Basavapatna  -  Sule  Kere  -  Channagiri  -  Holalkere  -  Hosdurga  -  Vanivilaspura  (  Vanivilas  Sagara  )  -  Hiriyur  -  Sira  -  Tumkur  -  Bangalore.

Will  make  changes  if  Teerthahalli  is  too  difficult  (  roads,  access,  etc.,).

Madan  sir,  its  better  we  take  off  Tirthahalli.  We  can  directly  go  Koppa  -  NRpura  -  Mandagadde.  Just  met  a  person  from  thirthahalli  and  also  talked  to  a  guy  over  there,  those  seem  to  be  similar  to  where  we  are  going.  Basically  wanted  some  streams  which  might  join  Sharavati  rather  than  Tunga  or  bhadra.  It  seems,  we  would  have  to  travel  further  off  course  for  that.

And  the  guy  told  me  that  lot  of  fishing  activity  goes  on  near  Mandagadde.  Maybe  we  should  aim  for  some  good  amount  of  time  at  this  stretch.

And  while  going  towards  chickmaglur,  I  would  suggest  Bangalore  -  Nelamangala  -  Kunigal  -  Hassan  -  Belur  -  Chickamaglur.  Think  we  might  be  able  to  save  quite  some  time.  I  have  been  through  Hassan  -  Belur  -  Mudigere,  will  have  to  enquire  on  how  the  road  is  from  Belur  to  Chickamaglur.

You  can  ignore  this  if  you  have  already  considered  this  route.

PS:  I  have  travelled  from  Bangalore  to  Horanadu  almost  every  month  till  couple  of  years  back.  This  stretch  is(was)  pretty  good.

Yes  Deepak,  through  Tirthahalli  it  gets  to  450  kms  by  my  road  maps.

After  the  telcon  with  you  now,  Tirthahalli  as  a  night's  stopover  will  also  be  a  good  choice.  Let's  explore  that  also  and  keep  options  open.
Tirthahalli  -  Mandagadde  will  be  very  nice  to  check  out  as  there  seem  to  be  very  good  spots  enroute  and  at  Mandagadde.

Let's  rule  out  Hassan  -  Chikmanglur,  we  did  a  trip  that  way,  to  Markandayenahalli  last  year,  good  but  nothing  worth  looking  for  this  trip.

Why  me??  First  I  had  to  opt  out  of  the  proposed  Chennai  trip  because  of  office  work,  now  I  can't  attend  this  because  my  son's  exams  get  postponed  by  a  day  !!  Was  planning  on  dropping  them  off  at  my  in-laws  and  coming  over  to  Bangalore  with  Gokul.

   Sad

I  don't  know.  It  was  supposed  to  be  over  by  the  9th,  giving  me  ample  time  to  drop  them  off  and  leave  with  Gokul  on  the  10th.  Now,  his  last  exam  is  on  the  11th,  the  same  day  of  the  trip.

Some  re-adjustments  in  their  schedule.  Poor  boy!  My  brother's  kids  finish  their  exams  by  this  month  end  itself.

thanks  a  lot  Madan...ill  be  looking  forward  for  the  trip...
i  have  driven  a  lot  in  the  past  few  years,  so  i  dont  think  driving  long  distance  will  be  a  problem  for  me...smoking  is  not  allowed  in  my  car  at  any  cost  but  i  have  no  issues  with  people  drinking  or  eating  in  my  car  provided  they  dont  dirty  it...

Have  had  a  horrid  net  connection  since  morning.  Finally  set  right.  Just  spoke  to  Trevor  and  Gokul.  Guys,  I  would  love  to  come,  especially  since  I  was  probably  7-8  years  old  when  I  last  went  to  Shimoga.  I  first  had  thought  about  driving  all  the  way  with  them  for  the  trip.  I  don't  think  the  two  of  them  will  be  able  to  take  close  to  1600  kms  of  continuous  travel  in  4  days.

Convincing  the  home  ministry  to  wait  another  4  days  before  she  can  be  dropped  off  at  her  mother's  ....  married  guys  know  how  it  is.  You  don't  want  to  get  pulled  up  for  that  one.   Chuckle  You  will  hear  it  till  your  death.  Just  keeping  my  fingers  crossed.

So  for  now,  I  will  put  myself  back  into  -  to  be  confirmed.

Please  DIY  hand  nets  with  short  handles.
A  good  size  would  be  24  x  16  inches.  Use  small  mesh  size.
I  am  trying  out  a  couple  of  other  nets,  a  drag  net  and  another  triangular  one  used  by  local  fishermen.
