Take a 2 Litre plastic coke bottle. Fill with distilled or RO water (RO is better). Add 2 table spoons of magnesium sulphate and 1 Tea spoon of calcium hydroxide . Let it dissolve properly and then add about 100ml of this every other day to the tank.. its called Purple up ! |

I use Magnesium sulphate and Calcium hydroxide (kalkwasser) regulerly to promote coralline. Keeping magnesium at 1400ppm will encourage coralline algae growth but calcium also will need to be at 350-400ppm. I do however have a very purple tank and not sure if it is to everyone's taste
The dosage however needs to carefully administered if you already have live corals in the tank as overdosing can cause them to bleach and also cause fluctuations in PH.. though Kalkwasser is not a very strong PH increasing agent but it is something that can cause problems.

Well its not really tough !! ..
Dose Kalwasser and Magnesium and iodine and strontium. Keep lightings Dim and preferably more actinic if you do not have a higher kelvin light. High flow rate is also extremely essential 8 or 10 times the water volume atleast. Lastly keep the water well areated. Perform Water changes once a month atleast 30%. This should get you some good coraline growth. |

That turly is not purple up, you will need to add iodine, strontium, mollybodium and a lot of other trace elements to make it into purple up.
Those 2 are just some of the components of purple up ...unless thats your definition of purple up and not Caribsea / Seachems. |

Does anyone know the actual contents of purple up? I am sure it does have those trace elements as well but it would be good to know if the manufacturer has released any data on this (though a bit unlikely else there would have been competition)
I have however had great success with dosing kalkwasser and magnesium sulphate but I dont dose any of the others. But I do use a good quality synthetic salt that is already enriched with all trace elements including calcium and magnesium.
Coralline does however need a lot of light and a lot of flow. I did not think 10x the flow would be enough as my tank currently has 75-80x the flow (yes I mean 70 & 80) along with 3WPG of light 50% of which are blue actinic bulbs.
