 Hello  All,

At  last  our  Collection  venture  at  Ulhas  River-Badlapur  was  finally  over  successfully,  with  a  bonus  visit  to  Shiva’s  hatchery.  So  here  it  goes…..

Arvind,  Sameer  Joshi,  myself,  Clive  &  his  6  year  old  son  ‘Nathan’  were  sharp  in  reaching  &  gathering  at  06:15AM  at  Kurla  Station.  I  received  SMS  from  Percy  that  train  started  right  on  time  from  CST  at  06:16AM  which  arrived  at  Kurla  06:38AM.  Percy  waived  our  National  flag  from  train  window  to  indicate  where  he  was  sitting  and  all  of  us  boarded  the  train.  Nathan  was  pretty  active  in  tell  us  details  about  his  bowl  &  his  pet  ‘Fighter’  fish.  All  of  us  were  so  involved  in  chatting  with  each  other,  we  never  knew  when  Dombivli  station  passed  by  where  Sameer  Gudhate  was  supposed  to  join  us.  Sameer  G  boarded  in  the  train  but  was  sitting  in  next  compartment  but  later  joined  us  at  Thakurli  station.  We  reached  Badlapur  station  right  on  at  07:35AM  and  we  had  pleasant  surprise  to  see  ‘The  Discus  Man-  Shiva’  joining  us  at  the  station.  We  reached  the  river  spot  within  10  minutes  and  while  walking  on  the  bridge  could  see  fishes  swimming  down  in  the  water  which  included  barbs,  danios  and  also  one  very  big  cichlid.

Upon  reaching  the  spot,  all  of  us  except  Percy  immediately  ran  towards  the  water.   Had  no  success  for  the  first  30-45  minutes  as  Danios  were  pretty  fast  and  almost  flew  off  as  we  approach  them.   As  we  were  busy  spotting  fishes,  Percy  persistently  kept  shouting  ,”  Mila  Kya?”   After  sometime  someone  shouted,”Pakda,  pakda”  and  all  of  us  ran  towards  the  shout.  Someone  had  caught  one  loach  which  was  immediately  transferred  to  plastic  bag  and  was  shooted  on  camera  by  Percy  who  was  our  unofficial  photographer  for  a  while.   Shiva  was  going  towards  distant  water  and  kept  calling  “Yogesh,  ithe  ye”  to  join  him.   I  was  slipping  frequently  with  my  slippers  so  got  rid  of  them  in  the  water.   Shiva  was  very  patient  in  looking  for  fishes  with  net  in  his  both  hands.  His  patience  paid  off  when  he  caught  some  extraordinary  looking  4-5”  fish  which  we  named  ‘Swordfish’.  The  fish  was  really  beautiful  &  was  dumped  to  plastic  bag  again.  The  bigger  version  of  this  ‘Swordfish’  was  caught  soon  again  by  Shiva  but  it  didn’t  look  in  great  condition  when  it  was  dropped  to  plastic  home,  as  the  fish  was  upside  down  immediately.  It  rotated  itself  vertically  and  was  really  breathing  fast.  We  kept  it  in  a  bag  for  about  15  minutes  &  later  commonly  agreed  to  release  it  bag  as  suspected  it  wouldn’t  make  a  trip  back.  Myself  released  the  fish  back  into  water  which  everybody  thought  was  an  ‘Act  of  Kindness’.  Everyone  was  happy  to  see  ‘Swordfish’  sailing  smoothly  back  into  its  waterbody.   Shiva  was  back  in  action  again  when  he  caught  3  more  loaches  at  one  go.  I  was  mainly  looking  for  Danios  which  didn’t  fool  to  our  ‘Fishfood’  carrot.

Then  we  decided  to  change  the  fishing  spot  and  have  a  break.   Sameer  G  had  brought  plenty  of  sandwiches  prepared  by  his  wife  which  were  delicious.  Percy  opened  his  magic  sack  to  let  us  feast  on  mouth-watering  Mawa  Cakes  &  Fruit  Biscuits  brought  by  him.  We  headed  towards  the  river  bridge  where  we  could  see  local  people  washing  clothes  &  bathing.  We  tried  laying  mosquito  net  brought  by  Arvind  as  we  could  see  shoals  of  Danios  there  but  couldn’t  catch  a  single  due  to  their  fast  reactions.  We  again  changed  our  spot,  this  time  right  under  the  bridge  where  water  was  really  flowing  fast.  Clive  spotted  one  Sucker  lookalike  fish  which  I  was  desperate  to  catch  but  the  fish  kept  hiding  under  the  rock  and  cloudy  water.  We  offered  biscuits  to  fish,  Danios  were  really  fast  to  grab  the  biscuit  particles  but  didn’t  get  trapped  to  our  nets.  Shiva  was  busy  looking  for  Danios  at  some  other  spot  but  hey!!  Where  was  Arvind??   We  could  see  Arvind  laying  his  mosquito  net  far  from  us  with  lot  of  patience.  Late  he  shouted,  “Mila,  Mila”  and  all  of  us  ran  towards  him  to  see  what  he  has  caught.   Oh  man,  he  succeded  in  catching  Danio,  the  greatest  grab.  I  was  back  again  in  water  like  pervert  to  catch  something  and  managed  to  catch  one  shrimp  with  my  unusual  ‘Jump  &  Grab’  method.  Nathan  picked  up  some  shells  to  drop  in  his  betta  bowl.

As  the  sun  started  heating  up  at  11AM,  locals  told  us  to  go  towards  a  spot  atleast  kilometer  away  to  catch  fishes  &  Prawns.  Everyone  was  exhausted  with  the  heat  but  decided  to  go  to  Shiva’s  hatchery.  After  about  45  minutes  journey,  we  reached  the  hatchery  which  had  a  den-like  entrance.  Percy  was  really  excited  to  his  favorite  Blue  Diamonds  in  a  tank  near  entrance  and  kept  telling  us  his  BDs  look  the  same  too.  Clive,  Nathan,  Arvind  &  myself  were  mesmerized  to  see  the  beautiful  discus  all  around  us.  The  Red  Melons  and  Blue  Diamonds  were  the  most  beautiful  specimen  I  have  seen  ever  personally.  Melons  had  those  dark  blood  colours  which  they  are  supposed  to  have.  Inner  room,  had  more  tanks  with  Breeding  Pairs  and  lots  of  frys.  Shiva  explained  the  status  of  each  pair  and  their  behaviour  with  great  enthusiasm.   People  kept  asking  him  questions  one  after  another  &  the  master  was  patiently  answering  all  of  them.   Personally  I  liked  Shiva’s  LSS  pair  which  was  really  gorgeous.   The  word  ‘Water  Change’  was  uttered  a  million  times  in  the  hatchery.   Shiva  helped  us  oxygenate  the  collacted  fishes  for  its  further  journey,  unfortunately  a  shrimp  couldn’t  make  it.  But  all  of  us  were  overwhelmed  by  the  quality  of  discus  this  man  have  and  Percy  made  an  ‘Advance  Booking’  for  his  discus  with  Shiva.  I  was  really  happy  to  meet  fellow  IAH  hobbyists  and  simple  &  ‘down-to-earth’  personality  like  Shiva  which  is  totally  devoted  to  discus.  After  spending  about  an  hour,  we  headed  back  towards  our  home  as  many  of  us  were  hungry  for  home-made  lunch.

 Pictures  to  follow  soon…………………
