Sad  news  guys,  THe  turtle  i  was  talking  about  died  !!!  Its  because  of  the  vet  he  asked  me  to  put  it  in  the  sun  for  2  hours  daily  for  5  ~  7  days  ....  and  it  died  on  the  second  day  !!!

Now  i  bought  a  baby  turtle  about  a  inch  long  for  300  rupees  !!!  did  he  take  me  for  a  ride  ??  cause  my  old  turtle  was  only  250  and  it  was  inch  and  half  !!!

Hi,  I'm  new  to  this  forum..  I  didn't  knew  where  to  post  this..  So  I'm  posting  it  here(Cause  I'm  unable  to  understand  even  half  of  the  names  in  the  forum  index).
I  have  a  red  eared  slider  which  is  around  3  and  half  inches  long(I  think  it  will  be  male).  I  have  lots  of  questions  about  turtle  keeping.

search  around  the  web  read  articles  that  will  help  a  lot  :)

1)I'm  a  strict  veggie,  What  sort  of  veggies  can  i  feed  it  ??

you  can  give  him  spinach,  cabbage,  zucchini  and  many  other  leafy  veggies

redeared  wrote  (View  Post):
2)For  basking  heat,  Can  i  use  mercury  vapor  lamps  instead  of  UVB  as  its  hard  to  find. If  so  what  is  the  wattage  required?
i  think  a  regular  60W  bulb  should  suffice  for  now
u  will  need  to  keep  it  on  for  at  least  5-6  hours  a  day,  the  turt  may  come  out  to  bask  under  it.  but  do  keep  a  place  in  the  tank  where  he  can  go  to  hide  if,  even  when  the  light  is  on

redeared  wrote  (View  Post):
3)How  big  should  i  have  the  aquarium.

mine  grew  to  13"  accross(shell)  in  4  years  or  so
for  now  get  him  a  50g  tank  at  least,  so  that  in  one  corner  you  can  have  the  dock  and  in  the  other  he  can  have  some  cave  like  structures  to  hide

redeared  wrote  (View  Post):
4)I'm  suspecting  that  it  has  fungal  infection. How  to  go  about  it.
this  i  don't  know,  but  if  u  might  search  around  the  web  for  a  reptile  keeping  site  they  might  help  you  out  better

 1.  The  best  food,  suitable  for  both  you  and  the  turtle,  would  be  a  good  quality  turtle  pellet  or  stick.  Otherwise,  lettuce  can  be  given  daily.
 2.  Yes,  but  sunlight  is  better.
 3.  As  big  as  you  can  get.

The  need  to  bask  in  sunlight  for  a  few  hours  every  week.  The  rest  of  the  time  they  will  be  ok  with  an  artificial  light  source.

Just  because  you  are  a  vegetarian  you  cannot  expect  your  pets  to  follow  your  habits.  They  need  meat  in  their  diet  to  grow,  as  they  grow  they  will  eat  more  vegetable  matter  compared  to  meat.  You  need  to  give  it  conditions  it  requires  to  survive.

Tubefex  worms  are  mostly  sold  as  turtle  food  dont  feed  them  this.  Get  good  quality  pellets.  you  can  feed  them  eggs  and  shrimp  too.

No  Bad  luck  at  all,  at  one  point  in  time  I  used  to  have  3  flap  shell  turtles  in  my  well,  all  over  1  foot  long.  They  were  with  me  for  over  18-20  yrs.  Any  way  after  they  died  my  mom  dint  allow  me  to  keep  any  more  saying  that  one  of  her  friends  mentioned  that  they  were  not  supposed  to  be  kept  at  home  as  they  bring  bad  luck.  Lots  of  other  hobbyists  have  faced  flak  at  home  when  they  wanted  to  keep  turtles.  Any  way  it’s  a  very  pleasant  experience  keeping  turtles.  Best  of  luck.  Check  this  place  out:

You  already  have  this  one  thread  for  your  doubts.  Please  do  not  create  new  topics  for  the  same  Red  Eared  issues,  now  merged  this  with  the  older  thread.
