 Thank  you  guys....

Prasoon  -  i  have  adapted  them  to  almost  all  feeds.....  they  have  to  survive  if  they  are  sent  out  (mostly  we  give  them  is  brown  feed  (Scampi  feed)  and  twice  a  week  blood  worms  or  mosquito  larvae  and  BHM.  All  natives  i  keep  i  have  adapted  them  to  brown  feed.

Rahul  -  i  had  no  information  on  their  age  of  sexual  maturity,  but  i  got  a  brood  at  1  year  3  months,  but  as  far  i  know  they  have  bred  earlier  to  that  but  have  eaten  the  eggs.  For  that  matter  E  maculatus  that  i  have  bred  in  less  than  seven  months.

Vyas  -  already  one  year  since  you  came  to  my  place,  i  had  uploaded  the  video  last  month  itself

Well,  maculatus  will  spawn  at  about  3  months  old,  they're  very  precocious.

Whatever  information  we  have  thus  far  suggests  both  suratensis  and  canarensis  take  2  years  or  more  before  they'll  spawn,  much  like  the  Paretroplus.  It'll  be  very  useful  if  you  can  document  their  development  better,  ideally  with  preserved  specimens  at  different  stages  of  growth.

Rahul  -  Sure  will  try  to  do  that  next  time.  i  hate  the  concept  of  killing  to  preserve  specimens.....  will  try  to  photograph  different  stages  of  growth  next  time.

where  did  you  get  info  on  size  at  first  maturity  of  E  canarensis  any  specific  fisheries  journal?

There  are  no  peer  reviewed  publications  on  the  breeding  biology  of  this  fish.  Which  is  why  your  documenting  their  growth  properly  would  be  of  great  interest.

All  we  have  thus  far  are  reports  in  the  aquarium  literature  of  people  who  have  maintained  this  fish  long  term.  And,  of  course,  personal  communications.  No  one  has  reported  any  breeding  activity  in  fish  that  are  younger  than  2  years  old.

Ok.....  i  was  curious,  as  i  was  looking  for  information  on  reproductive  biology  of  E  canaernsis  past  2  years  and  have  not  come  across  any.

I  think  it  is  time  to  work  on  the  reproductive  biology  of  this.....  i  will  have  push  someone  to  look  at  it.

We  found  ours  --both  the  original  wild  babies  &  the  F1s  to  be  somewhat  slow  growing.   We  feed  them  very  well  (wide  variety  of  quality  prepared,  fresh,  &  live  foods*),  do  weekly  water  changes).   I  think  the  problem  is  space;   oat  the  moment  the  largest  tank  we  have  is  a  125  for  the  largest  batch  left  (about  75),  the  other  batches  are  in  55s.   The  9  parents  are  in  a  homemade  8x2x1.5ft  tank,  about  200  gal  or~800L.

Do  your  parents  keep  care  of  the  spawn,  or  do  you  oull  the  eggs?  Does  the  pair  stay  in  with  other  adults?

*getting  them  to  eat  is  certainly  not  a  problem;  I  nicknamed  them  "Baby  Goats"  because  they  eat  EVERYTHING.   So  much  for  my  planted  tanks!

We  have  let  the  parents  take  care  of  the  young....  did  not  want  to  take  a  chance.  They  do  grow  slowly...  but  provide  a  large  space  the  growth  is  must  better.

That  is  wonderful  that  the  parents  take  care  of  the  fry;  are  there  other  adults  in  the  same  tank?   Do  the  parents  dig  pits,  and   move  the  fry  from  pit  to  pit?   Our  adults  dig  pits  while  they  are  guarding  the  eggs,  I  assume  to  hide  the  fry,  but  they  always  eat  the  eggs/fry  at  the  end  of  the  third  day  --right  about  when  they're  chewing  them  out  of  the  egg  shell.   I  don't  know  if  the  other  parents  are  too  close,  or  what.   The  last  pair  kept  the  other  7  fish  at  the  other  end  of  the  8  foot  long  (~2.5m?)  tank.

I've  thought  of  removing  some  of  the  adults,  or  dropping  in  a  divider  after  a  couple  have  paired  off,  but  I  really  hate  to  disturb  them,  they're  doing  so  well!   I've  also  come  very  close  to  tagging  them  with  the  latex  color  "beads,"  so  I  could  keep  exact  track  of  who's  mating  with  whom,  but  talk  about  disruption!  --i'd  have  to  catch  each  one,  anesthetize,  inject,  etc.   I  get  faint  just  thinking  about  it.

 Sorry  so  many  questions!
