Fair  enough,  but  did  you  ever  consider  giving  the  priority  to  FH  and  discuss  on  alternate  days???  Why  not  50%  for  discus  today  and  50%  for  FH  the  next  day???  When  it  comes  to  WC  why  is  discus  getting  all  the  priority???

like  Madan  said  that  the  answer  to  your  question.

if  at  all  for  some  reason  I  do  not  do  the  Wc  the  same  day  I  will  always  make  sure  that  the  next  day  early  morning  I  get  the  Wc  done.

I  have  started  keeping  Discus  only  after  keeping  in  mind  that  i  can  do  daily  Wc  if  could  not  do  so  I  would  have  then  stuck  to  keeping  FH  only.

No  problem,  it  happens  with  age   ROFL   ROFL   Just  kidding  boss.

Ok  Now  we  have  a  valid  point....

"Discus  are  more  sensitive  to  water  parameters  than  other  fish"     I  assume  it  is  true  since  it  is  coming  from  you.

That  settles  most  of  my  questions...  They  are  sensitive  to  water  parameters  so  if  you  want  to  keep  them  healthy  and  happy  then  do  regular  water  change  !!!

 End  of  story.

Thanks  to  all  for  their  inputs.

There  is  a  point  which  everyone  seems  to  be  missing  ,  have  kept  discus  earlier  but  never  bred  them,  so  I  am  not  a  very  experienced  guy  and  have  given  my  4  discus  to  a  friend  when  I  shifted  my  house.

Now  ,  discus  fish  ,  in  general  are  very  sensitive  to  water  parameters  and  love  fresh  ,  clean  water.  Most  fish  don't  like  80%  ,  90%  water  changes  -  but  discus  love  it.  Why  ?  Because  discus  come  from  a  part  of  the  Amazon  river  where  it  rains  really  heavily  and  every  now  and  then  the  water  of  the  river  is  refreshed  with  fresh  ,  soft  ,  rain  water.  Though  ,  the  water  is  slow  moving  ,  it  is  fresh  and  clean.  That  is  why  discus  can  tolerate  and  like  massive  water  change.

This  alone  is  one  big  reason.  Coming  to  the  second  reason  ,  when  in  a  closed  aquarium  environment  ,  discus  fish  secrete  a  slimy  chemical  that  prevents  them  from  outgrowing  the  tank  ,  that  is  ,  they  try  to  retain  '  small  '  sizes  so  that  they  can  adjust  to  the  closed  environment.  This  is  not  something  that  a  fish  keeper  wants.  If  you  want  to  only  display  your  fish  ,  you  should  quit  the  hobby.  The  hobby  is  about  caring  ,  you  care  for  them  -  they  will  care  for  you.  (  the  enjoyment  and  satisfaction  you  get  after  raising  some  beautiful  discus  -  i  can't  explain  in  words  !  )   Smile

Neon  Tetras  also  come  from  a  similar  region  and  that  is  why  they  are  also  sensitive  to  water  parameters.

Angel  fish  grows  drastically  faster  if   you  do  50%  WC  every  other  day  and  give  them  varied  diet.  Try  it  yourself  !

This  should  explain  WHY  discus  fish  need  much  more  '  close  to  origin  '  water  parameters  than  others.

Not  at  all  true.  Each  of  us  have  thought  these  questions  and  have  asked  them  on  various  forums.  Nothing  is  done  blindly  ,  there  is  a  reason  behind  everything.   Smile

As  Discus  Breeder  -  My  view  on  frequent  water  change  .

Doing  frequent  and  bigger  WC  helps  discus  to  discharge  waste  ,  their  digestion  increases  and  they  feel  more  hungry  and  they  eat  well  ,  thus  they  grow  well  .  this  is  due  to  change  in  chemicals  contents  in  water  .

Doing  frequent  WC  helps  to  keep  the  Ammonia  /  Nitrate  level  at  acceptable  limit  which  is  essential  for  their  growth  and  less  chances  of  illness  .

Water  change  triggers  biological  response  in  fish  and  stimulate  spawning  .

Small  babies  kept  in  big  numbers  in  any  tank  absorbs  Calcium  ,Phosphates  and  other  minerals   from  water  .  Replacing  old  water  with  new  helps  them  to  get  back  these  minerals  .  do  you  think  discus  will  grow  well  in  de-mineralized  /  de-ionized  water  ?  No  way  .  During  the  growing  stage  of  discus  if  they  don’t  get  sufficient  required  minerals  they  don’t  grow  well  .  so  they  get  part  of  their  requirements  of  minerals  from  the  water  .

If  you  keep  50  Discus  of  1  inch  size   in  200  ltrs  tank  (  Tank  AA  )   with  very  good  filtration  system  and  doing  10-20  %   WC  after  every  three  days  ,  and  same  discus  in  other  tank  (  Tank  BB  )  with  only  sponge  filter  and  doing   75%   WC  twice  daily  .  You  will  see  that  the  discus  in  tank  BB  will  be  growing  faster  then  tank  AA  .

Above  points  are  just  a  guideline  from  breeders  point  of  view  ,  normal  tank  holder  should  go  as  per  their  tank  set  up  and  other  factors  which  I  had  mentioned  in  the  other  thread  .
