 Hi  All,

My  tank  is  48"/18"/18"  .  I  cann't  use  4Ft  tube  because  the  canopy  is  not  having  the  length.

Should  I  make  a  new  canopy  or  can  you  guys  give  me  some  alternatives?

 I  cann't  afford  m/h  bulbs.

 Regards
 Amitava  Chakraborty

 Hi  Amit,

Why  not  remove  the  canopy  &  suspend  a  4  feet  tube  light  fitting  over  the  tank  ?

 Hi  Amit,

Any  suspension  type  tube  light  fitting  may  be  used.  Go  for  one  with  mirror  optics.  You  will  get  maximum  light  output  from  this  type  of  fitting  since  the  mirror  over  the  tube  will  reflect  all  the  light  into  the  tank. You  can  also  reduce  wattage  since  the  efficency  of  the  fitting  is  very  high.  Also,  the  louvers  will  prevent  glare.

I  suggest  any  good  make,  like  Philips,  etc.

If  you  combine  mirror  optics  &  trulight  type  bulb,  you  may  reduce  light  wattage  by  1/3.

BTW,  Mirror  optics  fittings  are  not  cheap.  Philips  mirror  optic  fitting  (40  watts  x  2)  will  cost  about  Rs  3250/-.  Price  of  lesser  known  brands  will  be  cheaper.  When  you  consider  that  150  watts  MH  set  costs  about  Rs  2500/-,  MH  may  be  a  more  economical  option  in  the  long  run.

 Ravi,

I  had  check  out  the  market  ,  the  mirror  fitting  is  pretty  costly  here  al  cal.  I  leave  that  idea.

 yesterday  night  I  found  a  site  .  URL  :  -  http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Hills/2637/index.html

It  is  having  a  beautiful  idea  to  make  your  own  canopy.

I  will  give  it  a  try  on  the  weekend.  Let's  hope  it  will  serve  my  purpose.

Can  you  or  somebody  send  some  plant  fertiliser  like  liquid  irom  and  daily  dose  to  me  ?  I  can  send  you  the  payment  by  cheque  or  bank  transfer.  because  I  found  it  very  hard  to  get  some  aquarium  plant  fertilizer  here.

 regards
 Amitava

 Hi  Amit,

If  you  are  planning  to  make  this  type  of  canopy,  plan  for  sufficient  ventilation.  I  have  a  tank  with  similar  canopy.  With  3  trulight,  water  temperature  will  reach  33+  C  during  summary.  Most  plants  &  fishes  will  not  tolerate  this  high  termperature.

To  prevent  increased  water  temperature,  you  may  need  to  do  the  following:

 1. Use  electronic  ballast  instead  of  normal  ones.  Electronic  ballasts  generates  less  heat.
 2. Fix  these  ballasts  outside  the  canopy.
 3. Plan  for  sufficient  ventilation.
 4. Instrument  cooling  fan  (4  inches  dia,  240  V  ac,  about  Rs  250/-)  will  be  required  if  outside  air  temperature  exceeds  26  C.
 5. Fan  should  work  during  lights  on  period  &  for  about  45  minutes  after  lights  off.
 6. For  this  fan  to  be  effective,  the  fan  &  the  air  inlet  should  be  diagonally  opposite  each  other,  with  air  flowing  lengthwise.
 7. Another  design:  Have  ventilation  on  the  top  of  the  canopy  &  use  fan  to  force  air  into  the  canopy.  Hopefully,  heat  will  raise  &  go  away  even  when  the  fan  is  not  on.

On  the  canopy,  make  sure  that  it  is  light  enough  &  easy  to  handle.

 Also,  checkout  Deepak's  design:

 http://indianaquariumhobbyist.com/community/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&pos=-954

I  think  this  design  is  far  supplier  to  the  one  you  have  mentioned.  You  will  not  have  water  heating  problem.  Please  contact  Deepak  for  more  info.  He  will  also  supply  to  you.

In  case  your  tank  is  not  a  planted  tank  why  don't  you  try  fitting  the  tubes  diagonally  and  let  us  know  the  results  ?
   Very Happy

 Hi  Amitava,

I  can  send  you  some  plant  fertiliser  but  it  will  be  a  very  small  quantity.
The  best  option  for  you  will  be  to  contact  Rufus  -  9845039631,  who  can  send  you  the  stuff  in  powdered  form.  The  mixing  instructions  and  dosage  are  detailed  elsewhere  in  the  forum.

That  will  work  out  real  cheap  for  you.

BTW  contact  Rufus  on  or  after  9th  May.  He's  in  Dubai  now  visiting  his  fiancee.

 Murthy,

I  am  almost  through  with  the  DIY  hood  ,  it  is  comming  nice.  for  the  reflector  I  will  use  alliminium  foil  for  now.  But  later  I  will  fix  a  mirror  over  the  tubes.  I  am  now  fixing  2  phans  on  the  left  and  right  side  to  take  air  in  and  drilling  some  small  holes  on  the  roof  of  the  hood  to  get  the  hot  air  out.  I  will  post  a  picture  when  it  is  finished.

 Madan,

Pls.  send  me  some  fertiliser  .  I  want  to  test  it  out.  I  will  surely  call  up  rufuse  after  9th.

 many  thnks  for  your  help.

 regards

 Hi  Ravi,

I  must  say  this  is  fantastic.  I  am  seriously  thinking  to  change  my  plan.  Pls.  tell  me  that  what  should  be  right  height  to  put  a  hood  with  4  truelight  tube  from  the  aquarium  and  what  should  I  use  to  cover  my  squarium  so  that  no  fish  can  jump  out.
