 Hi,

I  have  6  young  (14  months  old)  blue  discus  may  be  the  strain  is  Cobalt  blue  (not  sure).  They  were  ok  but  for  the  last  few  days  i  saw  some  scles  of  discus  at  tank  bottom.  And  i  observed  some  wound  on  their  body.  They  also  have  some  extra  slime.  Another  thing  is  they  suddenly  breath  very  fast  for  few  seconds  and  then  they  breath  again  normally.  Sometime  they  also  shake  their  fins  and  body  rapidly.  Here  are  more  information  about  the  tank  and  Discus.

 Tank  size:  L3  x  H2  x  B1.5
 Temp:   30  C.
 Ph:  6.4-7.0
 Size  of  Discus:  5  inch.
I  feed  them  BHM  and  tetrabits.
 WC  daily  50%

Please  experts  help  me.  I  surf  internet  and  found  that  it  can  be  Costia.   What  sould  i  do  now?

 Thanks  in  advance,
 Punna.

I  suspect  ectoparasite  infection  ,  will  try  PP  treatment  ,

 1)  Stop  Feeding  .
 2)  Adjust  the  water  level  height  to  20  inch  ,  pl  calculate  now  the  water  volume  should  be  around  202  ltrs  =  200  ltrs  .
 3)  Remove  all  filters  ,  only  airstone  ,  put  extra  air  stone  for  strong  aeration  .
 4)  Do  50  %  WC  with  aged  water  ,  not  to  add  Sodium  Thiosulphate  (hypo  )  after  WC  .
 5)  Dose   PP  with  400  mg  (  four  hundred  MILIGRAM  Repeat  MILIGRAM  )  for  200  ltrs  .  measure  this  dose  correctly  .
 6)  Also  add  Normal  Kitchen  salt  200  gm  for  200  trs.
6)After  24  hrs  clean  the  tank  from  all  side  and  do  100%  WC  with  aged  water  .
 7)  Perform  this  treatment  for  2  more  time  with  gap  of  2  -  3  days   in  between  each  treatment  .

 Imp  Note  :

1)Pl  ensure  there  is  not  a  drop  of  Formalin  or  Formalin  based  med  in  the  water  .  PP  &  Formalin  will  be  toxic  to  your  fish  .
 2)  Measure  400  mg  correctly  .
 3)  Not  to  put  Chlorine  Remover(  Sodium  Thiosulphate  )  during  WC  and  before  the  treatment  .
 4)  During  the  treatment  ,  if  you  need  emergency  help  ,  post  the  problem  in  this  forum  without  wasting  time   or  contact  me  on  my  mob  9323573147  .

 Hi  Sandy,

PP  treatment  is  Potassium  Permanganate  treatment.

You  get  1  gram  sachet  of  PP  in  medical  stores  pretty  cheap.  You  dissolve  this  1  gram  in  1  liter  of  water  (say),  then  add  200  ml  of  this  stock  solution  to  100  liters  of  aquarium  water  for  treatment  purposes.  Discard  the  remaining  stock  solution  if  not  used  within  a  day.

Or  get  yourself  a  small  balance  and  measure  out  1  gram.

Pl  also  ensure  that  the  Ph  is  below  7.5  ,  PP  treatment  works  better  at  ph  7  &  below  .

 Dear  Shiva  sir,

I  started  the  treatment  tonight.  After  giving  the  pp,  one  of  the  discus  is  facing  upwards  close  to  surface  and  another  one  is  clamped  its  fin  and  stays  at  a  corner.  other  four  is  ok.  Shiva  sir,  i  have  some  question,

 *  Should  i  feed  them   between  each  treatment?
 *  Is  pp  is  cause  problem  for  breeding  in  future?
 *

 Punna  ,

I  presume  you  had  made  the  stock  solution  as  below  as  mentioned  by  Mr  Madan  .

1  gm  PP  in  1  ltr  of  water
Then  you  must  have  added  400  ml  of  this  stock  solution  to  200  ltrs  of  your  tank  water  .

Above  stock  solution  and  dosage  is  correct  .

Once  the  treatment  is  over  you  can  feed  them  ,  best  you  feed  them  with  BHM  with  metro  .

It  will  not  cause  any  problem  for  breeding  in  future  .

I  presume  you  are  talking  about  stock  solution  ,  which  is  correct  .

What  is  the  color  of  the  tank  water  now  Pink  ,   or  Brown  ?  after  how  many  hrs  ?

 Thanks

The  discus  in  distress  are  the  ones  with  trouble  with  their  slime  coat  "out  of  order".
The  PP  is  affecting  them,  they  should  recover  with  the  elimination  of  parasites.

 Keep  aeration  high.

 Dear  Shiva  Sir,

Now  the  tank  color  is  brown  and  After  3-4  hrs  it  changed  into  Brown  color.  I  have  noticed  that  2  of  my  discus  is  breathing  heavily  and  one  of  them  always  stays  at  a  corner.  But  another  one  which  was  facing  upwards  is  in  normal  mood  now  but  breathing  heavily.  And  their  is  brown  slimes  and  powder  like  stuff  is  on  the  floor  and  water  of  the  tank.

@Madan......I  am  giving  them  2  air-stone  with  full  power.  Is  it  ok?

I  am  doing  this  treatment  for  the  first  time  in  my  life,  thats  why  i  am  bit  nervous.
 I  am  posting  some  pictures.

 Punna  ,

After  24  hrs  clean  all  sides  of  the  tank  ,  and  do  100%  WC  .  Use  24  hrs  aged  water  aerated  water  .

Keep  us  posted  about  the  condition  of  your  discus  ,  keep  a  log  book  and  list  the  details  of  treatment  .

 Thanks

You  are  doing  good.  Don't  worry.  Follow  the  routine  shiva  has  suggested.

Use  new  PP  for  second  round  of  treatment.

 Dear  Shiva  Sir,

4  of  them  is  is  good  but  2  is  just  flat  to  the  bottom  of  the  tank.  And  their  body  is  totally  turned  into  white.  But  they  are  breathing.  I  dont  think   i  can  make  this  2  discus  survive  Crying or Very sad  .  I  am  posting  their  picture  after  100%  WC.

 Punna  ,

After  the  treatment  ,  if  four  of  your  discus  are  ok  ,  then  i  think  other  two  should  also  be  ok  .  monitor  them  ,  and  keep  good  aeration  in  tank  .  feed  very  less  .  let  see  how  it  progress  .

What  is  your  contact  no  ?

 Hi  Shiva  sir,

Those  2  Discus  just  died  today  evening   Crying or Very sad  .  But  the  other  4  is  good.  I  give  them  a  little  food.  Only  tetra  bits.  I  am  keeping  strong  aeration  in  tank.  Before  starting  the  treatment  these  2  are  the  most  effected  by  the  parasite.  Most  probabally  this  is  the  reason  they  died.  These  2  dont  show  up  any  good  signs  while  treatment  was  ging  on.  But  other  4  have  nice  come  back.
