 Forever  in  love..

My  first  pair  of  Channas  (wild  caught  breeding  pair)  were  so  much  in  love  that  they  jointly  committed  suicide.  We  had  caught  them  in  a  stream  near  Siruvani  and  brought  them  home  late  in  the  evening.  The  two  were  housed  in  a  3x1.5x1.5  on  the  second  rack  (the  top  is  about  4'  off  the  ground).  The  top  was  covered  with  cardboard  cartons,  a  long  piece  of  ply  and  a  large  driftwood.  This  was  when  I  had  just  moved  the  tanks  from  the  store  to  the  first  floor  of  my  house.

The  next  morning,  there  was  no  sign  of  them.  I  spent  about  an  hour  searching  all  around  the  floor,  the  neighbouring  tanks,  the  tanks  below  them  but  absolutely  no  sign.  The  cover  on  top  seemed  to  be  intact  as  well.  I  couldn't  pinpoint  what  could  have  happened,  but  finally  came  to  the  conclusion  that  the  neighbourhood  cats  were  to  blame.

The  next  day,  my  wife  was  rummaging  through  all  the  stuff  that  had  been  moved  to  the  portico  roof  and  she  found  both  of  them  together,  bone  dry.  The  channas  had  jumped  out  of  my  tank,  travelled  20'  to  the  three  stairs  which  lead  to  the  portico  roof,  down  the  stairs  past  all  the  stuff  and  ended  up  in  a  corner.  A  good  35'  feet  away.  The  funny  thing  was  both  of  them  were  together.  Lovers  till  the  last  breath.

 ...  to  be  continued.

Mine  were  danios,  6  feet  and  dead.  They  were  feeders  trying  to  jump  out  of  my  cichlid  tank.  Found  2  the  next  morning  out  side  the  tank.

Mine  has  to  be  the  Channa  gachua  that  traveled  a  good  20'+  from  my  bedroom  to  the  hall  and  yet  was  lucky  enough  to  survive  as  he  was  rescued  by  mom  Smile

 Suraj,
Sadly  that's  the  very  first  lesson  a  channa  keeper  learns!

BTW,  all  of  my  Barilius  sp.  losses  have  been  due  to  mass  suicides  Sad

 Continued...

Last  month,  I  picked  up  three  Channa  gachua  from  Vignesh.  Two  died  because  of  infighting.  This  tank  was  on  the  third  row,  the  top  being  a  good  7'  off  the  ground.  Closed  18"  tall  tank  with  about  9-10"  of  water.  Last  week  late  in  the  evening,  the  third  one  decided  he  will  take  a  walk  as  he  was  getting  bored  and  lonely.

Off  the  tank  he  comes,  this  time  this  guy  chose  the  stairs  to  come  down  from  the  balcony.  About  18  steps  down,  a  step  up  on  to  the  small  garden  area,  moving  through  towards  the  entrance  and  nudged  Pandian  who  was  sticking  some  glass.  Guess  who  had  a  heart  attack.  Pandian  screamed.

The  gachua  is  now  in  a  plastic  tub  in  the  verandah  itself.  I  hope  he  is  not  going  to  try  a  walk  on  the  road  soon.

His  record:  70  feet  minimum  and  alive!  Must  have  registered  himself  in  the  armed  forces,  I  think.  Imagine  paradropping  7'  down  from  the  tank,  rolling  another  12'  down  the  stairs,  hopping  a  foot  up  on  to  the  garden,  crawling  over  20'  of  mud.   Chuckle

Mine  was  an  incident  with  a  Amano  Shrimp.....

It  was  like  01:00  AM,  i  had  just  done  a  water  change  for  my  plnated  tank  which  is  in  one  of  the  rooms.  I  came  out  to  the  hall,  sitting  on  the  sofa  and  browsing  the  net,  I  caught  some  movement  in  the  corner  of  my  eye,  saw  this  weird  thing  crawling  (Quite  Fast)  in  the  middle  of  the  hall,  I  reached  for  my  slippers,  went  closer  and  when  i  had  a  closer  look  it  was  one  of  my  Amano  Shrimps  who  had  jumped  like  4  Ft  from  the  tank  and  crawled  like  15  Ft  to  the  hall  and  it  was  covered  with  all  sorts  of  stuff  from  crawling  all  the  way,  scooped  him  up  and  put  him  back  in  the  tank.

Good  thing  i  decided  to  have  a  closer  look,  before  i  brought  the  slipper  down  on  the  fella   Chuckle

Another  Incident  was  at  Pradeep  Simhan's  house  a  long  time  ago,  he  had  just  got  a  Channa  and  i  wanted  to  have  a  look  at  it,  when  i  reached  Pradeep  was  telling  me  that  the  Channa  had  jumped  out  and  he  had  just  put  him  back  in  the  tank  .....  so  of  we  went  to  his  fish  room  to  have  a  look  at  him  and  .......  well  he  was  not  to  be  found  .....  he  had  decided  to  take  a  walk  ....  AGAIN  .....  "Never  give  up  attitude"   ROFL

 Come  what  may!

They  always  seem  to  crawl  towards  light.

I  had  about  20  channa.sp  2"[fry  size]  which  Mudassir  got  for  me,  all  in  a  20gal.  Never  expected  them  to  jump  off.
They  did  make  a  trip  from  a  dark  bedroom  to  hall  which  had  lighting...
few  others  crawled  towards  bedlamp  lolz!!
Managed  to  get  hold  of  a  few, fed  to  FH  Very Happy   rest  I  never  found.

 Indeed  long  distance  jumpers.

Hope  I  get  hand  on  few  c.assam  soon  Smile

my  denisonii  -  jumped  off  during  a  water  change  straight  to  the  floor...  tried  to  pick  him,  he  jumped  again  to  a  longer  distance...  from  my  drawing  room,  via  bedroom,  finally  to  the  balcony...  everytime  want  to  get  hold  of  him,  he  jumps  another  distance..  finally  landed  on  a  plant  tub  in  the  balcony...  picked  him  up,  was  little  terrified  whether  he  had  an  injury...  started  happily  munching  tetra  bits  few  moments  later..   Chuckle
