Not  the  most  accurate  method,  but  as  per  the  pic  posted  by  Tabrez,  it  seems  to  have  approx.  32+  rays...

Channa  orientalis  also  has  between  32  to  37  rays  on  the  dorsal.

My  count  is  also  32+  rays  as  per  the  pic  but  since  this  fish  has  ventral  fins  I  suppose  this  should  be  a  'Channa  gachua'.

Brighter  and  more  prominent  colors  is  a  sign  of  contentment.

We  could  call  it  Channa  gachua  "Happy".  Smile

...  Or  we  could  call  it  Channa  gachua  "Benami"  or  "Laawaris"   Chuckle

Aren't  Orientalis  endemic  to  Sri  Lanka?  Though,  there  have  been  many  claims  of  collection  in  India,  they  have  turned  out  to  be  gachua  variants.

In  any  case  gachua  itself  have  huge  no.  of  local  variations  (even  within  India)  such  as  gachua  "Assam",  "Bengal",  "South  India"  etc.  etc.  etc.  It  in  any  case  has  one  of  the  widest  distribution  of  channas  among  all  species...  so  may  be  its  a  new  sub  species  or  variant!

@  beta:  Those  Gachuas  in  the  pic  were  collected  by  me  with  the  help  of  a  fisherman  near  Bangarpet,  Karnataka  ...  certainly  a  more  "brown"  looking  Gachua  than  those  from  the  North  East.

@  Ajay:  Yeah  mate  it  does  look  similar  to  the  one  in  your  pic,  except  for  the  fact  that  its  body  markings  and  head  shape  are  different

@  Madhu:  It  would  most  probably  be  a  Gachua  variant  as  others  too  feel  the  same.

@  Trevor:  Like  Vyas  said  I  am  inquisitive  to  know  if  there  are  any  records  or  pics  of  the  Channa  Orientalis  in  Karnataka.  I  would  land  up  to  that  place  ASAP   Very Happy

 Interesting  pics  Tabrez...

Well,  the  mystery  deepens...  they  look  different  from  the  ones  collected  from  Karnataka.

Don't  have  a  clear  explanation,  but  my  2  cents  on  this  is  that  the  channas  are  still  not  a  popular  aquarium  fish  and  there  are  a  fair  no.  of  variants  yet  to  be  discovered.  Some  of  the  species  like  the  gachua,  striata,  stewarti  have  been  sometimes  been  categorized  as  a  complex.  This  means  that  there  are  a  fair  no.  of  similar  yet  distinct  (sub)  species.

For  example,  a  Channa  sp  'True  Blue'  is  considered  by  many  to  be  part  of  the  stewarti  complex.  Same  is  the  case  for  sp  'Meghalaya  Leopard'  and  sp  'Patterned'.  In  fact,  it  gets  difficult  to  identify  some  of  these  when  they  are  stressed  and  their  typical  coloration  is  not  visible...

So  you  never  know...  u  may  have  either  a  color  variant  or  a  new  sub-species...

"sp.  turquoise"  is  a  trade  name  applied  to  a  gachua  like  fish  from  Assam.  It  has  no  taxonomic  basis.  The  word  "turquoise",  just  like  the  words  "true  blue",  "meghalaya  leopard",  "violet  moonbeam"  etc.,  is  designed  to  help  sell  fish.

Opinions  are  divided  on  whether  "sp.  turquoise"  represents  a  separate  species  or  just  a  form  of  gachua.  Last  I  heard,  the  argument  for  a  variant  of  gachua  had  the  upper  ground.

In  the  interests  of  clarity,  it  is  better  to  restrict  the  "turquoise"  to  blueish  fish  from  Assam.  The  fish  from  Karnataka  would  be  best  represented  by  Channa  cf.  gachua  "Karnataka"  (or  name  of  water  body  it  was  collected  from).  If  you  want  a  fancy  name,  call  it  sp.  aquamarine  or  something.  Please  don't  add  to  the  confusion  by  insisting  on  applying  the  same  trade  name  to  different  fish.
