Hi,  i  am  planing  to  grew  plants  in  my  40  liter  tank.  I  bought  Cryptocoryne  Lingua  and  Cryptocoryne  Parva  plants.
My  tank  is  BOYU  MR  4I8  and  my  light  is  very  small  6W.
I  will  have  to  modify  the  tank  to  hold  higher  watt  bulb.
I  stay  in  New  Mumbai,  what  type  of  sand  should  I  use?  Is  it  available  to  purchase?
Do  i  need  CO2?  I  have  two  gold  fish.

 regards,
 Harish  Abraham

If  you  just  have  2  plants,  you  wont  really  need  CO2.  2  goldfish  is  quite  a  lot  for  a  40  litre  tank  make  sure  you  have  adequate  filtration.  If  you  want  to  have  a  planted  tank  you  will  need  some  nutrient  subsstrate,  either  a  base  layer  below  the  sand  or  only  nutrient  substrate.  For  sand  you  can  get  golden  sand  I  think  its  called.

Plants  with  Gold  Fish  would  not  work  out.  Sooner  or  later,  these  gold  fishes  are  going  to  tear  apart  the  plants  mate.

They  dont  really  have  a  bad  immune  system.  With  a  proper  diet  and  enough  tanks  space  they  can  live  for  years  and  even  get  upto  a  foot  in  length  !!
I  feel  the  ones  you  currently  have  are  already  way  to  big  for  the  tank.  They  must  be  shiting  themselves  to  death  in  there.  If  you  dont  mind,  maybe  you  could  exchange  them  at  your  fish  shop  for  smaller  fish.  Guppies,  mollies,  platies  or  swordtails  would  be  a  good  start.  They  are  attractive  and  quite  hardy.  Your  tank  could  hold  6-8  Guppies  or  4-5  of  the  others  easily.  What  filtration  does  the  tank  have  and  how  long  has  it  been  running  ?

Lighting  :  To  make  a  decent  planted  aquarium,  you  will  need  more  light  definitely.  With  the  6W  you  have  currently  you  can  have  java  fern  if  it  is  right  under  the  light.  What  type  of  bulb  is  it  ?  If  it  like  the  energy  saving  bulbs  we  use  at  home  you  can  get  a  20W  bulb  in  Cool  Daylight  colour  to  replace  it.

Nutrient  substrate  :  This  means  that  if  you  are  useing  fertilizer  base  layer  topped  with  sand,  the  base  layer  would  be  laterite  soil  or  another  AQUARIUM  base  fertilizer.  If  you  want  substrate  which  has  nutrients  completely  spread  in  it,  not  just  the  base  you  can  go  for  river  sand  or  river  gravel  and  if  you  have  cash  then  an  ADA  substrate.

 A  goldfish  tank!
My  most  favourite  fish  apart  from  Discus.

 @  Harish
My  advice  to  you  is  either  go  for  a  goldfish  tank  or  a  planted  tank.  Doing  both  is  like  trying  to  step  on  two  boats  on  the  same  time.  Those  goldfisshes  of  yours  would  at  some  point  tear  apart  every  single  plant  on  the  tank.  Take  this  from  a  person  who  has  kept  goldfish  for  years  and  have  tried  to  do  all  these  things  many  times.

By  the  way  I  forgot  to  mention,  that  you  tank  looks  pretty  good.  But  the  size  of  the  tank  is  way  too  small  for  those  fish.
The  general  thumb  rule  is  that  you  need  10gallons  per  goldfish  for  the  fish  to  thrive  in  a  healthy  manner.
Also  I  must  mention  that  a  goldfish  tanks  generally  does  not  need  a  thermostat,  because  they  are  cold  temp  fishes.

But  the  most  important  thing  is  that  you  have  made  a  start  with  neat  setup.  Now  as  you  gather  knowledge,  keep  making  changes  for  the  betterment  of  your  fishes.

Kindly  do  not  get  disheartened  with  all  these  lectures  that  I  gave  you.
Its  not  bad  to  not  know  things.  But  it  would  be  a  sin  to  not  act  after  knowing  the  things.

Wish  you  good  luck  and  Happy  fish  keeping.  Thumb Up

Both  of  the  crypts  you've  purchased  are  delicate(usually  crypts  arent  considered  delicate,  but  when  it  comes  to  a  goldfish  tank....),  so  I  doubt  they'll  be  eaten  by  the  goldies.  Go  for  crypt  wendtii,  these  are  one  of  the  best  crypts  for  beginners,  they  never  die  or  get  eaten(by  a  few  fish)  no  matter  what  and  keep  on  growing,   there  are  chances  that  a  group  of  these  survive  in  a  goldfish  tank.  I  have  also  seen  people  keeping  ferns  with  them  successfully.
Like  everyone  said,  its  always  better  either  go  for  goldies  or  plants.

You  can  grow  only  cryptocoryne,  Anubias,  Hornwot,  Java  fern  etc.  hard  plants  with  gold  fish.

Thanks  every  one,  my  filter  is  only  particle  filter  and  i  ordered  carbon  and  bio  and  will  put  after  the  ich  treatment  is  over.  Light  is  half  blue  and  half  regular  type  CFL,  which  came  with  this  tank.  (BOYU  MR  418).
I  was  told  by  the  pet  shop  owner  that  I  can  put  this  two  golf  fish  in  this  40L  tank.  Now  i  can't  give  it  back  as  my  kids  know  and  given  names  to  this  two  fish.  Smile
I  will  try  with  two  plants  and  see  how  it  will  work,  if  not  I  might  get  a  different  tank  later.
Heater  i  kept  there  for  the  treatment  of  Ich  (to  increase  the  temperature).
 thanks,
    Harish

Never  trust  MOST  shopkeepers  when  they  suggest  stocking  !  They  will  always  say  anything  can  fit  in  any  size  tank  and  any  fish  is  compatible  with  any  other  fish  !

 Now  I  know.   Smile
Actually  he  told  me  I  can  put  2  angel  fish  also  in  the  same  tank,  but  by  the  time  he  got  the  fish,  my  fish  developed  Ich  so  I  did  not  took  them.  Now  looking  back,  a  new  tank  and  new  fish  (just  5  days)  developing  Ich  is  kind  of  strange.  May  be  those  fishes  have  the  parasite  in  the  first  place  and  change  in  water  temperature  might  have  brought  it  out.
My  plants,  Aquaclay  Ground,  small  drift  wood,  carbon  filter,  and  bio  filter  pad  all  will  reach  in  few  days.  Hope  I  will  be  able  to  do  a  proper  job  and  my  fishes  will  survive  it.

 thanks,
    Harish
