 Well  the  tank  is  a  small  one  of  38  inchx19inchx19inch,roughly  50  gals.
 The  swimmimng  pool  filter  sand  is  heavy  and  donot  get  easily  blown  away.Moreover  in  almost  all  international  forums  I  have  seen  people  using  this  sand  for  SA  setup.It  looks  simply  stunning  in  my  views.

 This  is  the  side  effect  of  reading  too  much  of  International  forums.   ROFL   Use  normal  shell  free  river  sand  used  for  wall  plastering.

 Well  Tirthada,you  are  right.But  even  some  experienced  SA  hobbyists  have  also  suggested  me  to  go  for  pool  filter  sand.And  just  wanted  to  try  them  out  if  they  were  easily  available.Just  for  curiosity  and  eagerness,  you  know.Anyways  will  go  for  normal  sand  if  I  donot  get  hold  of  them.

 What  is  the  speciality  of  Pool  filter  sand  and  the  difference  with  normal  sand?  How  it  will  help  SA  cichlids?  I  am  not  disagree  with  the  option  but  want  to  know,  why  I  should  prefer  it.  I  am  not  even  a  cichlids  beginner  but  would  love  to  know  the  reason.

 <ADDED>

 In  west,  Pool  filter  sand  is  easiest  to  get  I  think.  Thats  why  it's  so  popular.

 Abhishek,

 All  you  have  to  do  is,  get  the  normal  sand  and  seive  it  to  get  sand  particles  between  1mm  -  2mm.  This  will  be  'Pool  filter  sand'.  I  have  done  this  thing  (without  knowing  what  'Pool  filter  sand'  is)  and  it  will  take  quite  a  bit  of  effort  even  to  get  enough  sand  for  a  2footer.  Unless  you  have  some  cheap  labor  at  hand  and  they  do  a  good  job  at  it,  you  can  just  get  the  regular  sand.  Only  diff  being  the  commercially  available  ones  abroad  will  be  uniform  in  size.

 Swimming  pool  filter  sand  has  only  3  qualities  to  recommend  it.  First  the  sand  is  of  uniform  grain  size  being  between  30  and  40  mesh.  Second  it  is  hard  enough  not  to  breakdown  into  smaller  size.  Third  it  is  inert  and  does  not  react  to  acid  or  alkali.

 The  absence  of  the  smaller  grain  size  ensures  that  digger  cichlids  (and  other  diggers)  will  not  be  able  to  make  the  water  foggy  with  their  diggings.

 Some  rivers  will  provide  the  necessary  size  and  quality  at  specific  sand  beds,  like  the  Barakar  near  Dhanbad.  If  you  cannot  find  such  sand  placement  you  only  have  to  buy  two  square  holed  wire  nets,  one  having  30  holes  per  inch  and  the  other  40  holes  per  inch  (give  or  take  a  couple).  Screen  the  normal  available  construction  sand  throwing  away  what  does  not  pass  through  30#  screen  and  also  throw  away  that  which  passes  through  40#  net  you  will  have  the  sand  you  are  looking  for  once  you  have  washed  it  clean.

 Hi  Abhishek,

 Try  and  get  to  a  swimming  pool  and  ask  them  if  you  can  see  their  filtration  when  you  do  see  it  just  ask  him/her  where  did  they  get  the  filter  from  and  contact  that  guy  and  get  some  sand.  Should  be  the  easiest  possible  thing  to  do.  This  normally  comes  in  packs  of  15  odd  kilos  but  if  you  can  bargain  well  maybe  you  can  get  a  smaller  quantity.

 I  would  highly  recommend  Austin's  Swimming  Pumps  and  filtration  system  is  a  combined  filter  and  motor  pump  that  cleans  the  swimming  pool  very  easily.
