well  its  not  actually  for  fish,  but  for  my  dog  (great  dane)
i  started  feeding  him  purely  on  raw  meat  and  he  gets  about  1.5  kg  a  day.  mostly  chicken  and  fish  now.

so  need  to  find  cheaper  sources.

i  heard  beef  heart  is  a  lot  cheaper  than  the  normal  beef  meat.

can  anyone  tell  me  the  appx  cost  of  beef  heart?
just  to  have  an  idea.(no  vendors  near  my  house)

i  hope  you  can  type  the  cost  of  it  in  here.
or  just  say  something  like  more/  less  than  rs  50  or  rs  80  etc.
 or  in  mathematical  formulas   Smile

Siddhu,  I  am  sure  there  is  no  difference  in  cost  between  beef  heart  and  the  normal  beef.

But  I  wonder  what  makes  you  feed  a  dog  kept  in  a  city  raw  meat.

What  if  your  dog  starts  to  love  raw  meat  and  shows  his  wild  traits.

Raw  meat  is  raw  meat.  Period.

 I  fear  for  you.  Sad

"What  if  your  dog  starts  to  love  raw  meat  and  shows  his  wild  traits.  "
   thats  just  a  myth/  superstition.
 i  too  heard  it  before.
his  behavior  wont  be  affected  by  meat  (he  might  be  more  active~healthier  food)

raw  meat  is  the  best  food  you  can  feed  a  dog.
its  not  as  simple  as  buying  meat  and  feeding  your  dog.
you  have  to  learn  a  lot  before  you  start  and  you  should  know  what  you  are  doing.  so  he  gets  a  balanced  diet.
AND  to  do  it  hygenically  (more  risk  to  humans  than  dogs).  Always  get  FRESH  meat  (not  the  waste  lying  around  in  the  butchers')  and  immediately  clean  and  freeze  the  rest  for  later.

you  dont  have  to  take  my  word  for  it.
there  are  a  few  recent  scientific  studies  on  raw  feeding  and  LOTS  of  reports  from  dog  breed  clubs  around  the  world.

raw  feeding  was  once  the  most  popular  one  before  1940s  around  the  world  (before  commercial  dog  foods)
now  its  getting  popular  again  because  of  the  obvious  benefits

the  ONLY  BAD  THINGS  -  a  little  expensive  ,  needs  more  work/time  ,  some  are  squeamish  to  handle  raw  meat.

changes  ive  seen  in  my  great  dane   in  the  last  10  days  i  fed  him  with  raw  meat  -

-most  noticable  -  his  body  odour  is  very  much  reduced

-no  mouth  odour(raw  meat  and  bones  clean  teeth)

-his  skin  rashes  have  reduced  very  much  (  the  reason  i  started  raw  feeding  -  his  skin  is  sensitive  -  possible  food  allergies  to  commercial  dog  food)

 -  he  doesnt  poop  as  much  as  a  cow  now   Chuckle  (commercial  dog  food  is  full  of  "fillers")
did  you  know  Pedigree  has  only  about  4  %  meat  ?
poop  size  is  very  much  reduced  now.  like  70  %  less

 -  coat  is  smoother  and  a  little  reduced  hair  shedding  (  maybe   because  of  food)

there  are  more  benefits  like  no  need  to  drink  lots  of  water  (raw  meat  has  about  65%  water)  etc.

(my  great  dane  pup  was  previously  fed  on  royal  canin/  regal/  homecooked  food  over  7  months)

if  you  are  interested,  i  can  give  you  the  links  to  more  information  and  the  studies/  reports  behind  raw  feeding

 lol
 i  know
2  of  3  vets  i  know  are  also  agaisnt  raw  feeding.
the  other  one  is  neutral.  he  isnt  against  it,  but  says  its  unnecessary(time/cost)

one  reason  is  vets  have  very  little  training/  education  about  canine  nutrition.
and  they  are  sponsored  by  commercial  dog  food  companies.
i  think  its  mostly  because  of  lack  of  awareness/  experience  of  feeding  raw.

another  reason  maybe  is  because  its  NOT  EASY  Smile
you  have  to  learn  a  lot  about  it  so  you  give  a  balanced  diet  -  for  example  you  feed  raw  meat  about  2  -3  %  of  the  dogs  estimated  Adult  weight  per  day  (throughout  his  life).  and  one  type  of  meat  is  not  enough.  and  needs  fish(cheapest  will  do)  atleast  once  a  week  for  vitamin  E  and  omega3&6  fatty  acids.
and  it  should  roughly  contain  about  80%  meat,  10%  bones,  10%  liver  and  other  offal.  (not  everyday.  can  be  averaged  over  weeks  or  a  month)

and  it  should  be  hygienic.  only  use  fresh/  frozen  meat.  dont  keep  meat  lying  around  in  the  open  too  long.  the  risk  is  NOT  for  dogs,  but  to  us  humans.  dogs  have  a  lots  better  immunity.

I  did  research  a  lot  before  i  started  raw  feeding.

if  you  think  vets  know  better,  let  me  tell  you  that  most  of  them  dont  even  have  a  basic  knowledge  of  the  dogs  physiology/  how  their  body  works.  i  can  tell.  im  a  doc   Smile

well.  with  meats  like  beef  and  fish  theres  a  little  risk  of  TapeWorm  infection.  so  it  maybe  better  if  cooked.  especially  if  its  low  quality  meat.
and  if  the  meat  is  not  freshly  cut  or  frozen  ,  it  should  be  cooked.

dogs  have  a  very  good  immunity  and  all  the  risk  is  to  humans  (because  of  handling)  rather  than  the  dog.  unless  the  dog  is  weakened  due  to  other  illness.

and  dogs  cant  digest  grains(like  rice)  properly.  most  of  it  comes  out  the  other  end.

well  all  i  can  say  is  if  you  are  willing  to  afford  it  and  have  the  time  to  do  it,  Raw  feeding  is  lots  better  than  any  homecooked  food  or  commercial  bags  of  Edit.

 Hi  Siddhu,

Nice  to  know  about  the  efforts  you  do  for  your  dog.

Be  cautious  about  Tape  worm  esp.  Taenia  infestations  -  their  source  is  raw  beef  and  pork  meat.

 Regards

Siddhu...   what  is  the  age  and  weight  of  your  GD?  And  have  you  ever  heard  about  GDV  among  deep-chested  breeds?  If  not,  make  sure  you  are  not  overfeeding  your  GD.  Remember....  GDs  are  having  slowest  metabolism  rate.

 hi  Siddu,
What  you  have  mentioned  with  regard  to  the  benifits  of  raw  meat,  is  bang  on  and  you  only  need  to  experience  it  to  see  the  benefits.  to  add  to  what  you  have  already  mentioned  is  seen  in  the  growth  period  when  the  bone  develops  a  lot  better  and  also  with  good  exercise  better  muscle  tone.
However  a  few  words  of  caution  here  ,  I  would  suggest  that  the  meat  be  washed  atleast  twice  in  hot  water  before  use  and  aslo  would  suggest  one  feed  a  day  be  of  a  commercial  diet  something  a  little  better  than  the  regular  Pedigree(Pappad),  may  be  the  Pedigree  advance  range,  as  it  avoids  the  use  of  a  lot  of  supplements  that  could  be  required  on  a  meat  only  diet.
Chicken  neck  and  back  are  also  a  good  and  cheap  alternative  atleast  you  know  the  quality  of  the  meat  you  are  feeding.
And  if  being  fed  a  meat  only  diet  would  recommend  a  weekly(one  day)  fast  were  you  can  leave  lots  of  water  with  honey  in  it  for  the  dog.  Would  also  suggest  atleast  a  couple  of  feeds  of  Spinach  and  rice  through  the  week. Also  if  possible  put  in  a  pea  sized  ball  of  yeast(live)  once  a  week.  Try  it  and  the  benefits  will  be  there  to  see.
All  the  best  with  your  dane,  how  old  is  it.
    Manoj.

my  uncle  has  one  Rottweiler  and  it  lives  on  beef  meat  which  is  washed  with  hot  water  (the  blood  has  to  be  washed  out).

also  she  gets  a  thick  roti  mixed  with  boiled  Goat's  legs(  paaya  Chuckle  )  in  the  night......

the  whole  thing(14-20  pieces)  is  cleaned  cut  and  cracked  with  a  heavy  sharp  blade  (so  as  to  get  the  marrow  out).  and  then  boiled  in  hot  water.  and  then  the  stuff  is  put  in  fridge.  and  miss  rottweiler  gets  2  pieces  everyday(not  in  extreme  summers).

though  my  dad  says  that  the  dog  will  go  mad  someday   ROFL

but  the  exercising  has  to  be  perfect  with  these  meal.  i  mean  the  energy  it  accumulates  has  to  be  used  else  rotties  get  into  character  if  they  are  not  well  exercised.

Siddhu...   what  is  the  age  and  weight  of  your  GD?  And  have  you  ever  heard  about  GDV  among  deep-chested  breeds?  If  not,  make  sure  you  are  not  overfeeding  your  GD.  Remember....  GDs  are  having  slowest  metabolism  rate.

my  pup  is  a  harlequin  (black  patches  on  white  colour)  7  months  old  now  and  weighs  about  48  kgs.  he  is  about  30"  at  the  shoulder.
his  Sire  is  a  German  import  Harlequin(about  38"  high)  and  Dam  is  black  from  UK  lines.

Yes  im  aware  of  Gastric  volvulus  -commonly  called  Bloat.
i  use  elevated  feeders.  and  take  other  precautions  against  it.
and  raw  feeding  reduces  the  risk  of  bloat.  since  the  volume  consumed  is  very  much  less  compared  to  commercial  dogfoods(which  are  full  of  junk  and  fillers).  and  digestion  of  raw  food  is  waay  faster  unlike  com.  dogfoods  which  sit  in  the  intestines  and  ferment  and  build  up  gas.

the  diet  i  use  is  called  "prey  model  raw  diet".  only  pure  raw  meat  and  nothing  else  -  no  veggies  and  no  grains.  i  give  an  egg  a  day  and  some  milk/  yoghurt  along  with  meat.
lots  of  websites  and  yahoo  groups  available  with  people  eagerly  wanting  to  share  information.

you  can  avoid  vitamin  deficiencies  by  feeding  different  kinds  of  meat  and  feeding  fish  (or  vitamin  E  supplements)  atleast  once  a  week.  you  should  aim  for  80%  muscle,  10%  bones,  10%  organs  (can  be  averaged  over  a  month)

and  EVERY  SINGLE  dog  food  available  in  India  is  absolute  junk.  i  can  give  you  a  ton  of  info  to  say  why  Smile

now  that  im  doing  it,  raw  feeding  isnt  as  expensive  as  i  thought  it  would  be.
i  get  chicken  whole  live  birds  and  get  it  dressed  for  free  Thumbs Up
im  going  to  start  feeding  chicken  necks  +  beef  heart  as  a  staple.
and  fish  like  sardines  are  very  very  cheap.
