Have  you  considered  Canon  1000  D  as  an  entry  level  DSLR.  It  is  priced  less  than  30K
Can  someone  please  throw  light  on  how  does  it  fair  as  compared  to  its  counterparts?
what  is  the  cheapest  that  one  has  got  it  for  ?

Ha,  Arvind.  You  can  ask  me  anything  about  camera  and  photography.   Very Happy
That  is  my  hobby  and  passion.   Smile
Depends  on  what  type  of  photos  you  are  planing  to  take,  you  can  chose  your  lens  and  can  go  for  the  kit  lens  if  not  sure  yet.  Eventually  you  will  know  what  lens  and  things  you  want.  So  like  any  hobby,  go  slow  and  stedy  and  unlike  many  hobbies  photography  equpments  are  very  expensive  so  your  mistakes  will  cost  you  a  lot.   Smile
The  most  common  mistakes  people  make  is  buying  lenses  which  you  don't  use  later.  And  lenses  are  usually  more  expensive  than  your  SLR  camera.   Smile

Coming  to  the  camera,  D60  is  an  entry  level  DSLR  and  a  decent  one.  Opinions  will  vary  from  people  to  people.  If  you  are  very  serious  then  consider  D90  because  you  will  outgrow  the  D60  in  about  an  year.  But  if  you  are  going  to  shoot  mostly  in  Auto  mode  then  don't  worry  about  it.

 Harish.

By  the  way  here  is  a  link  to  compare  both  the  cameras.  D60  and  1000D.

 http://www.digitalreview.ca/content/Nikon-D60-Compared-to-Canon-Rebel-XS-1000D.shtml

I  have  2  Nikon  DSLR  so  for  me  it  is  Nikon,  and  since  Nikon  lenses  cannot  be  used  with  Cannon  I  have  no  choice  also.   Smile   Like  I  said  lenses  are  more  expensive  than  the  camera.

 hope  it  will  help.

Nikon  D60  is  a  good  camera  ,  you  can  go  for  it.  If  your  budget  is  a  bit  more  then  go  for  D5000  with  the  18-55  VR  Kit  lens.  D5000  is  a  step  down  version  of  D300.  Nikon  D40  also  does  a  good  job  at  6  MP.  Nikon  Bodies  has  the  best  high  ISO  performance  in  the  industry  at  APS-C  and  Full  Frame  35mm  Sensors.
In  future  buy  a  SB  400  Speedlight  along  with  your  Nikon  Body  and  the  combination  will  be  excellent.

Do  look  at  Canon  EOS  500D  also,  packed  with  features  and  good  VFM  at  this  time.

Nikon  D5000  is  a  step  down  vertion  of  D90,  not  D300.   Smile  Cannon  has  a  better  performance  when  high  ISO  is  used  compared  to  Nikon,  Said  that  I  use  Nikon  cameras   only.  D40  is  no  more  under  production  I  think  D60  replaced  D40X  which  replased  D40  few  years  ago.  Now  D5000  is  a  kind  of  replacement  for  D60.   Smile

Here  is  a  site  for  very  simple  review  of  D  series  camera.

 Hope  it  helps.

 Just  my  93  paise.
The  D60  does  not  have  an  auto  focus  motor  so  you  will  need  to  buy  only  lenses  that  have  the  focusing  motor  built  in.
You  will  not  be  able  to  use   AF  lenses  but  need  to  buy  only  AF-S  type  lenses.
 I  would  say  either  buy  a  D90  or  a  good  used  D80.

You  can  go  to  http://www.jjmehta.com  for  price  reference.
JJ  Mehta  are  in  Mumbai,  so  I  would  just  go  to  them  and  get  their  advice.  I  buy  from  their  cousin,  Jayesh   here  in  Blr.
Bear  in  mind,  they  can  give  you  a  good  discount  in  the  store  and  grey  prices  will  be  much,  much  lower.

 Another  good  place  is  http://www.bangalorephotographyclub.com/forums
This  is  like  IAH  for  cameras.  Lots  of  photographers  giving  off  cameras  at  decent  prices.  Be  patient  and  you  may  come  across  a  bargain.

 I  second  Pradeep.
My  uncle  has  regularly  bought  most  of  his  cameras  from  Mehtas.

Arvind  -  Their  location  is  closer  to  your  place.  Best  place  to  get  cam  &  advice  instead  of  Grey  Market  bargaining.

Me  was  baiting  and  you  are  my  first  catch  Smile
True,  true,  all  up  to  personal  preference.  And  yes,  at  the  top  end,  Canons  make  the  best  lenses.
But  we  are  not  talking  top  end  here.  At  the   beginner/  mid  range,  I  feel  that  photos  from  a  Canon  tend  to  look  ever  so  slightly  washed  out  compared  to  photos  from  an  equivalent  Nikon,  both  with  kit  lenses  and  auto  settings.
However  from  personal  experience,  the  Canons  are  wee  little  dainty  cameras  with  everything  optimized  for  ideal  space  usage  for    people  with  very  small  hands    -  hence  the  "little  girl"  comment.
Not  to  be  biased,  the  Nikons  can  double  up  as  dumbells  and  it  gets  tiring  holding  up  one  after  a  while.   The  Nikon  D70  which  I  have  seems  to  fit  better  for  me  than  a  Canon  400D.  Again  just  a  personal  preference.

 Few  things..........   Smile

 1)  Cannon  is  for  girls  ...........  even  though  I  use  Nikon  cameras  Cannon  cameras  are  equally  popular  and  excellent  quality.  Ones  you  buy  more  lenses,  there  is  no  going  back.  I  have  about  5  lenses  all  Nikon  mount  which  cost  me  a  few  lakhs.  Now  I  cannot  buy  a  Cannon  since  I  will  have  to  sell  all  lenses  and  buy  all  these  lenses  again  for  Cannon  mount.

 2)  ps:  Ken  Rockwell  is  a  RETARD  ........  He  is  not  stupid,  just  his  personal  opinion.  Every  one  have  it  including  each  one  of  us.  May  be  it  differ  from  us,  if  so  think  about  it  and  then  accept  or  discard  things  from  his  advice.

 3)  Old  lenses  won't  work  ...........  Unless  you  are  already  in  photography,  it  is  very  unlikely  you  will  have  a  non  -AFS  lens  with  you.  I  have  only  1  Non  AFS  lens  with  me.  Non  AFS  lenses  are  still  available  and  are  very  cheap,  but  said  that  most  of  the  lenses  available  are  now  AFS.
Nikon,  D40,  D60,  D5000  won't  work  with  Non  AFS  lens.  Said  that  it  will  work  if  you  want  to  focus  manually,  but  then  again  what  is  the  point  of  buying  an  expensive  camera  isn't  it?

 4)  J.J.Mehtha  ............  I  bought  my  first  camera  from  there.  Decent  people.  But  if  you  travel  to  U.S,  or  Singapore  or  Malaysia  buy  it  from  there.  It  will  be  much  cheaper.  Warranty  is  only  available  in  the  country  where  it  is  purchased,  makes  it  similar  to  Grey  market.  But  lenses  have  international  warranty  though.

 regards,
      Harish

 Hi  All,

Day  before  yesterday  I  have  received  my  CANON  EOS  500D  REBEL  with  twine  lens,  it  is  awesome.
I  will  post  some  sample  shots  from  this  in  DISCUS  Forum.  Check  out..
I  would  bet  this  is  a  best  buy,  if  your  pocket  is  not  empty...   :D

 Regards,
