The Chennai Chapter is headed towards Talakona for a recee/collection trip tomorrow.
Talakona meaning Head Hill lies bout 220 kms from Chennai. Its literally behind the Tirupati Hills and is home to some really nice flora.
Things to remember : We are still that daft bunch that leaves at 3:00 AM (Sharp!!!!).
No idea what to expect in terms of fauna but Im guessing it might be similar to Kaigal.
Team :
Bala
Prasoon
Shankar
Sai
Rajeshwaran
Me
We are travelling in Prasoon's new Scorpio (or is it a Bolero)??? Either ways Im at the moment burning a lotta CD's to ensure this trip doesnt involve anything remotely related to Mohan.
Ps : A movie named Jalsa was apparently shot in Talakona. Thats enough sleaze for a collection trip dont you think????
Further updates on the fish collected and who won this war of the songs will follow. |

Folks,
Had a wonderful trip once again with the Chennai team.
For starters, this is where we went - Talakona falls
and this is what we caught!
That's it for the trailors.
More snaps to follow along with the write up!

Andhra doesnt seem to leave us alone. Keeps haunting us.
I had heard a lot about Talakona from various people and hence the destination was frozen upon. We left at around 3:15 AM after various wake up calls and some demeaning cuss words.
Shankar,Bala,Rajeshwaran and Sai were picked up at various points and we were on our way.
The Gang.
Journey was quite uneventful except for the guy (Shankar in this case) sitting behind in the Scorpio. Any bump, speed breaker etc ensured a few dislodged muscles.
Breakfast was skipped and we reached Talakona at around 8:45. The only worry was we were carrying nets and twas like a reserve.
As we were driving, we sighted the first water body which was very small and slow moving.
Species spotted / collected:
Garra Sp.
Rasbora daniconius
Danio malabaricus
Schistura denisonii
Schistura Sp. 1
Puntius bimaculatus
Schistura denisonii????
Collecting.
CLAWS!!!!!
The First Spot.
Mine!! Mine!! Mine!!
The second water body was like a small pond (small enough for 4 TSN's) and had some very plump Garra's. We spent very little time here. Obese men with nets, buckets and gorging on biscuits do not a pretty sight make and this was a reserve.
The Second Spot
Looking For Cats.
We had to do a small trek to hit the third place and all the senile people on the trip had to rough it out (By senile, Im not referring to Prasoon at all. Seriously. Except for a bad back, arthritis, some torn ligaments and the like, he s truly fit). By this time we realised that the diversity was not great but the loaches found here were fantastic. Atleast 3-4 species. There were some local forest department employees who got rather interested in what we were doing (collecting obviously. What did you think????).Very surprisingly, we never spotted any Puntius after the first spot and didnt spot any cats.
He spoke in Telugu and I spoke in Tamil suffixed by luu's and Im pretty sure he didn get what I was saying. In the end I had to show him the photography tank and make clicking noises. He did stick around for another hour. Someone had the brilliant idea to take pictures with him so he would buzz off. Im damn sure my family wont be happy if I place a framed picture of me and that guy (in his violet safari and bathroom slippers) on my mantle.
This spot turned out to be filled with loaches. Loads and load of 'em and for some reason, very willing to enter Rajeshwaran's nets and other such enterable points. I ve heard of chick magnets but this was ridiculous. If vonkaiser (remember him???) gets to meet Rajeshwaran, I sure as hell know what kinda FH we could expect.
The Walk/Trek.
Still walking. Still trekking.
Loach haven.
The Loaches.
Old men with cranky backs.
Bucket fulla loaches.
RIP Van Winkle
Nellika!!!!!!!!
Gotta love this pic.
After collecting ample loaches (Rajeshwaran was tired by this point. Dont ask me why) We decided to end collections and head for lunch. We had sighted a hotel earlier and headed straight for it. Had to pass through a shooting spot and looks like Prasoon and me might make it big in Tollywood. Watch out for the scene in which a Scorpio zooms in and 2 people are sitting in the front making very eccentric hand movements but making no sound.
Out Cold.
With this hotel not being any good, we headed straight to Tirupathi and rented a room for lunch. Rajeshwaran's carnivorous intents were very clear when he ordered 4 chicken dishes,1 biryani,1 omlette and then looked at us and said 'You guys want anything????'. Really now................
A sight for the starving eyes. Rajeshwaharan placing his order. Notice the bewildered look on the waiter's face?? Kinda like saying "But there s only one of you!!!!!"
What Can I Say???
I had arranged for a guys weekend out at Yelagiri and decided to break off after lunch. What else do you need on a weekend??? A nice collection trip, meat, tipple, more meat, awesome weather and a little more red meat followed by tipple.
Take Outs :
1)Not worth a second visit.
2)Lets head in any direction but towards Andhra in the next trip.
3)More of Prasoon's songs and Im gonna become a raging sociopath very soon. |

Thanks Balaji for the write-up. Here's the complete list of species noted by Shankar
1. Rasbora daniconius
2. Devario devario
3. Garra sp
4. Puntius bimaculatus
5. Schistura denisonii
6. Schistura sp with broken bands ( what appears like spots ) in the first half of the body
7. Schistura sp with almost no patterns, just a few odd speckles.
8. Schistura sp with bands pale red latter half of the body.
9. Pangio sp look-alike.
10. Chela sp
11. Wood shrimp and Red Claw shrimp.
12. Mystus gulio
13. Neotropius atherinoides
14. Etrolpus maculates
15. A lineatus
16. Glossogobius / Awaous sp
Only the first 11 were spotted at Talakona, the rest were spotted in a waterbody about 1.5 hours drive from Tirupathi (towards Chennai). Shankar felt that it will not be possible to catch the cats from the location |
