Travails  of  a  Pacu  keeper

Gulp..Disturbing....altho  having  said  that,  lesson  not  learned  ;i  will  still  try  my  level  best  to  accommodate  them...I  cant  see  myself  giving  it  back  to  them  now.

Bro  your  experience  is  all  too  familiar.  Hope  you  have  reviewed  the  "travails"  i  faced  in  rehousing  my  Pacus.  I  would  strongly  disagree  with  the  others  in  this  forum  who  have  mentioned  that  pacus  are  devoid  of  personality  and  boring  to  keep.  In  fact,  my  experience  with  Pacus  has  been  quite  the  opposite.

They  are  really  adorable  and  can  be  trained  to  feed  like  goldfish  -  they  jump  right  out  of  the  water  to  grab  the  food!  I  have  posted  a  video  of  the  same  somewhere  (will  dig  it  up).

The  only  two  things  to  be  careful  of  keeping  pacus  are:

[1]   They  will  end  up  fighting  like  rabid  dogs  for  no  apparent  reason.  The  Chinese  proverb  is  applicable  (it  is  not  the  size  of  the  dog  in  the  fight  but  the  size  of  the  fight  in  the  dog!).  See  some  live  action  here:

Link

During  these  fighting  sessions,  you  will  have  water  on  your  walls/floor,  scratches  on  the  inside  of  your  tank,  or  worse  case  scenario,  a  busted  tank!

[2]   They  freak/panic  sometimes  when  shocked.  Be  very  careful  about  switching  on  aquarium  lights.  Pacus  are  not  known  as  tank  busters  for  nothing.

If  you  need  any  help,  please  ping  me!

PS  :  That  6'  tank  would  do  the  Pacus  a  whole  lot  of  good!  Wish  i  could  keep  one  in  my  apartment  so  that  i  wouldnt  have  to  give  my  pacus  away!!

 Cheers!

They'll  outgrow  your  tank  in  no  time,  also  Pacus/Piranhas  should  not  be  kept  in  pairs,  as  they  tend  to  be  very  aggressive  towards  each  other,  better  kept  in  larger  groups  so  that  there  is  lesser  aggression.

True  that....they  do  have  a  lot  of  personality  imo  too...Always  seem  to  zig  zag  across  the  tank  whenever  I  am  around  to  catch  my  attention  ;)

As  u  pointed  out,  they  do  fight  a  lot  (or  play)  for  no  rhyme  or  reason  but  i  havent  noticed  any  ripped  fins  or  tails  so  its  all  good  i  suppose.  You  do  seem  to  know  pacus  inside  out  haha  which  is  a  good  thing  as  I  will  have  some  one  to  go  to  incase  i  need  help.

I  have  moved  them  out  of  the  boyu  as  i  felt  they  gonna  knock  the  boyu  off  the  stand  as  they  constantly  seemed  to  knock  against  it.  I  am  holding  them  in  a  3  footer  as  of  now  which  for  the  time  being  should  suffice.

A  while  back  had  a  scare,  namely  the  dreaded  hole  in  the  head  disease  where  the  whole  head  had  gone  transparent  (i  think  i  attribute  that  to  the  live  feeders)  and  hence  stopped  feeding  them  guppies.  Currently  been  fed  coriander  and  Taiyo  turtle  food  which  they  love.  Smile  In  short,  loving  the  pacu  experience.

What  if  I  introduce  two  small  pacus  into  the  mix  ;  will  that  reduce  the  aggression  or  increase  it   considering  they  will  be  relatively  smaller  than  the  existing  ones.

P.S-  Do  you  have  any  RBPs  too?

Update  on  the  Boyu  and  its  inhabitants...  The  Pacus  no  longer  occupy  tank  ;  their  place  has  been  taken  by  Goldies,  Black  Moores  and  SD's.

While  it  may  be  a  bit  late  for  the  "Pacu  V.  Piranha"  discussion,  I  thought  I  might  as  well  post  the  info  I  have  on  the  topic:

A  lot  more  about  this  (with  several  more  pics)  at:  http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=61138

About  the  Gold-fish  tank:  While  I  think  there's  a  very  serious  possibility  that  you  are  eventually  going  to  feed  these  to  your  bigger  fish  (Jardini  or  FH?),  if  you  are  indeed  interested  in  Gold-fish,  I  would  strongly  recommend  the  following  two  breeds:  Ranchu  and  Pearl-Scale.

 Cheers,
 Sid

Thats  again  a  very  odd  mix   Sad  and  these  will  grow  out  the  tank  as  well.

A  group  of  small  characins  or  cyprinids  will  be  more  suitable  for  this  tank.

Goldfishes  dont  interest  me  at  all.  This  tank  is  my  dad's  brainchild  and  he  is  in  complete  control  of  the  cleaning  and  the  inhabitants..

Arent  SD's  a  part  of  the  Characin  family?  Got  two  SD's  in  the  tank.  Agreed  they  and  the  goldies  make  a  weird  as  combination,  but  so  far  so  good.  certain  things  just  happen  to  click  and  this  did.

Gave  away  the  pacus  to  a  local  LFS(  he  actually  bought  them  off  me  ).  They  were  transferred  from  this  tank  to  a  3  footer  long  back  but  got  annoyed  by  their  docile  behavior
