What  are  you  feeding  them  Sridhar?  Very  healthy  fishes  indeed.

Another  thing  that  puzzled  me  is  that  if  yours  are  in  such  dark  water,  how  does  Amano  and  a  lot  of  others  keep  them  in  sparkling  clean  planted  tanks?  What  I  mean  to  ask  the  experts  is  that  there  must  be  a  way  where  you  can  get  rid  of  all  that  tannin  so  that  you  can  actually  watch  the  fishes  in  their  full  beauty?

What  else,  just  that  I  salute  your  passion  my  dear  friend.

In  my  tank  the  chances  of  algae  is  very  very  less  as  the  intensity  of  the  light  i  am  using  is  very  less.  It  is  custom  made  using  LED's.  And  also  not  sure  if  algae  will  be  there  in  such  low  pH.  The  water  in  my  tank  is  maintained  at  pH  of  5  and  I  am  using  RO  water.

Sridhar  ---  your  Altums  are  really  nice  !!!  they  show  nice  growth  from  the  last  pictures  you  had  shown...

Are  you  somewhere  down  the  line  planning  to  reduce  the  tanning  in  the  tank  so  that  they  are  more  visible?

 Hi  Sridhar,

Lovely  fish.  Just  a  question  if  you  are  running  an  external  filter  in  this  set  up  have  you  tried  ADA  Malaya?  I  am  currently  trying  it  in  my  Wild  Betta  setups  where  the  Ph  is  almost  at  the  same  level  as  these  Altums.

Another  question  to  ask  is  that  are  these  fish  wild  Caught  or  Tank  bred?  If  they  are  wilds  then  i  understand  the  consideration  being  given  to  the  water.  But  if  they  are  tank  bred  do  they  really  need  such  constant  control  over  the  water?  Just  a  question  since  i  have  seen  huge  Altums  at  a  friends  place  in  the  UK  and  yes  his  water  was  soft  but  he  never  added  any  peat  and  the  works  it  was  crystal  clear  water.  To  maintain  such  constantly  low  Ph  and  Hardness  i  would  assume  is  not  easy.  So  just  to  know  your  thoughts  on  why  go  with  this  water  for  the  Altums?

This  friend  also  told  me  a  very  interesting  bit  i  hope  i  am  saying  it  right.  He  told  me  that  most  of  the  Altums  that  come  are  in  pretty  decent  shape  (He  said  the  best  fish  go  to  Japan,  EU  and  USA)  but  the  biggest  mistake  that  people  make  is  to  treat  them  as  extremely  delicate  animals.  People  try  and  do  drip  method  of  acclimatisation  and  other  such  slow  methods.  He  told  me  that  when  the  fish  reach  you  the  level  of  CO2  in  the  bag  is  high  and  as  such  the  Ph  is  low  and  so  is  the  Ammonia  but  as  soon  as  the  Temp  goes  up  to  the  level  in  the  tank  they  should  be  transferred  to  the  aquarium  just  directly  without  addition  of  any  water  to  the  bag.  His  logic  was  that  when  air  reacts  with  the  water  in  the  bag  the  Ph  rises  and  so  does  the  level  of  Ammonia  and  this  leads  to  an  ammonia  spike  almost  instantly  which  can  either  kill  the  Altums  instantly  or  within  a  couple  of  days  maximum.  So  what  sort  of  an  acclimatisation  did  you  follow  on  these  fish?

Hope  i  have  not  asked  too  many  questions.

Vivek,  What  an  coincidence  ...  I  just  added  ADA  Bamboo  Charcoal  to  remove  the  tannin  from  the  water.  Bamboo  Charcoal  will  also  act  as  a  filter  medium.  If  bamboo  Charcoal  does  not  remove  the  tannin  i  will  add  NA  Carbon.  All  the  best  for  you  new  arrivals.  The  wild  Caught  black  Calvus  looks  stunning.

Nikhil,  Not  sure  if  they  are  tank  bred  or  Wild  Caught.  I  have  never  tried  the  Malaya  soil.  I  wanted  to  give  them  conditions  similar  to  what  is  found  in  the  wild,  hence  i  decided  to  use  fine  soil.  The  quarantine  tank  was  bare  bottom.

I  did  not  want  to  take  any  chance  this  time  around.  This  batch  was  the  best  fishes  i  have  received  so  far.  Previous  years  the  condition  of  the  fish  when  it  arrived  was  very  bad  and  also  i  did  not  have  soft  water.  So  this  time  i  had  setup  the  tank  with  soft  water  with  pH  close  to  6.  I  do  not  follow  the  drip  acclimatization  method  at  all.  As  soon  as  i  get  the  fishes  i  just  drop  them  in  to  the  quarantine  tank.  Then  slowly  i  decreased  the  pH  to   4  -  4.5  and  used  only  pure  RO  water.  I  have  the  RO  unit  from  ADA  installed  at  my  place.  I  also  used  lots  of  Badam  leaves  and  peat  to  decrease  the  pH  of  RO  water.  Temperature  was  maintained  at  31degress  in  the  quarantine  tank.

Now  after  i  transferred  them  to  the  bigger  tank,  i  slowly  bought  the  pH  back   to  5  -  5.5  as  it  is  very  difficult  to  maintain  such  low  pH  in  bigger  tanks  and  chances  are  that  the  pH  will  crash.  I  am  still  using  pure  RO  water  with  little  bit  of  tap  water  for  water  changes.  I  am  also  slowly  removing  the  tannin  released  by  peat  and  Badam  leaves.  In  the  main  tank  the  temperature  is  maintained  at  29  degrees.  Also  the  main  advantage  of  low  pH  is  that  the  effect  of  Ammonia  will  be  very  less  at  low  pH.  But  i  am  sure  that  there  is  no  Ammonia  build  up  in  the  tank  as  i  am  using  three  Ehiem  2217  in  the  tank  for  filtration.

Hopefully  i  can  grow  them  to  bigger  sizes  this  time  around.   Smile

Amano  Feeding  his  Altums.......this  is  just  amazing,  look  at  the  size  of  those  things,  sure  must  be  wild  caught...

By  the  way, very  nice  fishes  Srihar,  i  should  be  getting  mine  in  a  months  time......all  the  best....i  think  Nikhil  is  right,  you  sould  probably  train  them  for  higher  PH  levels  going  forward....  Thumb Up

 Hi  Sridhar,

Thanks  for  the  detailed  explanation.  I  agree  with  giving  the  fish  a  biotope  like  feel  in  the  tank.  But  what  i  was  referring  to  with  Malaya  was  that  if  used  in  the  filter  it  will  do  the  same  job  most  likely  better  than  what  Peat  does.  Yes  it  does  not  colour  the  water  with  Tannins  but  this  can  be  something  you  can  try  on  a  smaller  scale  to  see  if  it  is  indeed  feasible  and  maybe  for  your  next  batch  of  low  Ph  needing  fish  you  can  try  that  out.

Well  done  till  now  and  all  the  best  for  the  future  with  these.

Great  going  Sridhar,  they  look  awesome  in  tanned  water  as  well.
Heard  Gan's  wild-caught  beauties  are  kept  in  similar  blackwater  environment,  you  need  to  actually  take  the  fish  out  to  have  a  closer  look.

Adding  some  photos  of  the  Angels  that  i  took  yesterday  night.  The  photos  are  not  all  that  great  ...  still  learning  to  take  photos.   They  are  now  with  me  for  7  months  now.  Some  of  them  are  close  to  2  and  half  inches  body  size.
