 Hi  everyone..

This  is  something  weird  but  all  the  corals  in  my  tank  are  fine  except  XENIA.  I  got  a  Xenia  from  the  LFS  a  month  back  and  it  died  in  3days.  I  thought  the  Stock  was  damaged  and  i  got  another  Xenia  but  even  this  is  falling  apart  slowly.  What  could  be  the  reason  ?

Did  water  tests  and  everything  is  normal

 pH  :  8.4  and  kH  :  10.8

I  hav  attached  Pix  ..  Please  help  me  out.

 Thanks

They  say  that  some  hobbyist  cannot  seem  to  keep  this  coral  alive  and  some  find  it  to  be  a  fast  growing  coral  almost  like  weeds.   Although  there  are  some  guidelines  which  can  be  followed  to  improve  the  chance  of  success,  no  one  fully  understands  what  will  guarantee  success  with  this  coral.

Mine  touch  wood  have  been  doing  ok  so  far  even  though  they  don't  seem  to  be  growing  like  weeds.

I  have  the  same  problem  with  the  local  xenias  in  my  tank.  They  are  ok  for  a  few  months  and  then  slowly  die  off.  My  tank  temperature  is  27  C.  Xenias  probably  do  better  with  tank  temperatures  of  25  C.  30  c  is  way  too  high  for  any  reef  tank.  You  will  need  a  chiller  if  you  want  to  keep  the  coral  alive  in  the  long  run.  I  would  think  your  upper  limit  would  be  27C.  If  you  do  not  have  fans  running  at  present  I  would  suggest  you  add  a  few  to  bring  down  the  temperature.  I  keep  my  tank  at  27  to  give  the  chiller  a  easier  time,  however  25  c  would  be  preferable.

 2  possibilities
1-  chemical  allopathy  from  the  leather
 2-  temperature  is  too  high.

Probably  a  1/2  hp  chiller.  Thats  what  I  use  for  one  of  my  tanks  which  is  approximately  the  size  of  yours.  A  lot  of  people  will  recommend  a  smaller  chiller  but  you  will  find  that  it  will  struggle  in  chennai  summer  temperatures  over  40  C.  Most  of  the  chiller  are  meant  to  work  under  35  C  ambient  temperatures.

mine's  a  boyu  1/2  hp  chiller.  I  am  told  that  haelia  is  a  better  brand  but  who  knows  all  these  are  chinese  made.  If  you  want  better  quality  you  could  get  arctica  form  aquastar  at  a  higher  price!  Ask  for  the  1/2  HP  arctica  commercial  chiller.  I  am  not  sure  if  I  can  quote  the  price  of  the  boyu  chiller  in  this  forum.

 Hi,

I  think  more  than  the  temperature  it  would  be  chemical  allo  doing  the  job  here.  Most  indian  corals  are  used  to  higher  temperatures.  Especially  from  the  areas  they  come  from,  south  coast  sea  would  reach  30deg  during  the  summer  afternoon.  I  remember  once  checking  the  temperature  on  a  trip  to  gulf  of  mannar  with  some  marine  research  students  few  years  back  and  it  was  34deg.  The  corals  of  massive  form  were  in  full  bloom  there  for  sure.  Offcourse  the  water  parameters  are  quiet  pristine.  However  what  i  did  notice  was  in  a  particular  area  there  were  only  one  type  of  coral  spread  across.  So  mostly  there  were  sections  which  gave  an  indication  of  some  kind  of  teritorial  behaviour.  After  a  particular  stretch  we  found  a  vast  area  of  barren  land  which  mostly  had  live  rocks  but  no  corals  some  colonies  of  macro  algae  and  then  we  would  have  colonies  again.

So  you  may  want  to  check  and  place  them  way  apart,  i  am  not  certain  if  this  could  help  but  you  could  give  it  a  try.  If  i  were  you,  i  would  just  not  pick  any  more  xenia.  Why  keep  killing  them  !  you  have  had  your  share  with  2.  I  guess  that  makes  part  of  responsible  keeping.

 Warm  Regards
