All  that  talk  about  clove  oil  putting  it  to  sleep  and  the  vodka  killing  it  gently  has  not  worked  IME.

The  fish  thrash  about  as  soon  as  the  vodka  is  added  and  they're  dead  in  about  3-4  seconds  so  its  quick  but  probably  not  a  good  way  for  the  fish  to  go.

If  you  have  the  stomach  for  it  -  whack  it  on  a  hard  surface  as  others  have  suggested  -  its  probably  the  most  humane  way.

 Regards,
 Venkat

Sure,  you  can  feed  sick  fish  that  way  to  uninvited  guests.   Chuckle

IMHO  Preeth's  way  is  the  best.

Take  the  water  temp  down  to  around  4  degrees  (  Keep  a  bottle  of  water  in  freezer  and  take  it  out  just  when  its  about  to  freeze.)  Put  the  fish  in  and  without  a  wiggle,  the  fish  will  just  sink  to  the  floor  and  stop  breething.  Takes  about  2  to  3  sec.   Sad

About  the  banging  on  floor  stuff  Shocked  ,  what  if  it  doesnt  die????  It  has  to  suffocate  with  a  broken  back???  Seems  like  too  cruel  and  defies  the  very  meaning  of  the  word  "euthanasia".

About  the  necessity  of  a  euthanasia,  its  a  personal  choice,  and  also  depends  a  lot  on  whether  you  are  a  rearer  or  a  breeder  too.

 Regards,

 Vinod

Why  do  you  want  to  kill  it  when  there  can  be  hope  to  live...

 Do  this

Take  clean  water  in  a  Tub  or  any  vessel  put  some  hydrilla  for  few  hours,  so  that  it  gets  blended  in  that  vessel...  add  some  pond  snails..  that  grew  in  your  tank  and  put  it  in...
Take  the  sick  fish  and  place  it  in  that  setup...  It  will  slowly  heal...  I  tried  it  with  my  pleco  who  was  swollen  and  tried  to  surface  on  the  water...  Two  days  in  that  setup...  it  returned  back

That  is  of  course,  the  first  option.  What  you've  suggested  sounds  like  a  nice  rehab  home  for  any  fish,  but  isn't  guaranteed  to  heal  all  kinds  of  diseases.

A  very  good  idea.  You  have  me  here.  Clean  water  and  isolation  will  help.

What's  with  the  Hydrilla  and  pond  snails.  Snails  can  carry  diseases  and  why  only  Hydrilla.

I  had  to  put  down  my  fish  in  a  hurry  as  its  gut  n  all  had  come  out  in  an  accident.  in  a  hurry  i  just  picked  up  a  blade  and  it  was  way  sharper  than  normal  ones  so  i  just  cut  the  brain  in  a  whip.  no  movement  was  seen  later.

dont  know  if  this  is  a  humane  way  or  it  can  work  for  larger  fish  but  it  is  a  fast  method  for  sure.

I  dont  understand  why  some  are  discussing  abt  the  qt  tanks  when  the  topic  is  for  euthansia.

Well...  I  only  had  hydrilla  and  have  somewhere  read  that  hydrilla  has  medicinal  qualities  for  healing  infections...
Snails  came  automatically  ...  but  found  that  snails  ate  up  decayed  material

I  very  much  agree  with  Vinod's  point  of  view,  what  if  it  doesnt  die....  whew.  I  just  lost  around  35  small  ones,  Cardinals,  neon  tetra,  neon  black,  1  big  clown  loach  n  few  more  in  mere  4  days.....  now  an  empty  tank   Sad   was  too  much  for  me  to  see  them  dead  or  dying.

I  am  sorry  to  say,  but  are  you  mad?  Why  do  you  want  to  put  a  fish  into  sleep.  If  a  fish  is  sick  you  must  treat  it.  Although  if  it  is  not  possible  you  must  try  hard.  It's  my  opinion.

Go  back  and  read  the  thread.  Treatment  IS  the  first  option.  Sometimes  fish  do  NOT  get  better  and  only  suffer  more.  This  thread  isn't  about  what  you  think  of  euthanasia.  Its  about  the  most  humane  way  of  doing  it.  Normally,  I  wouldn't  react  to  a  keyboard  warrior  like  you,  but  if  you're  not  going  to  add  value  to  the  discussion,  at  least  don't  go  around  calling  people  mad.

Best  would  be  to  abandon  them  back  to  your  LFS....  if  they  dont  take  it...  find  a  place  like  a  pond  or  a  river  to  imerse  them...

Remember  life  is  not  for  us  to  take  away...wether  it  is  in  any  form  (   Surprised  except  dangerous  pests)

ALL  you  guys  who  do  the  killing...you  have  the  same  blood  like  fish

 COLD  BLOODED  ....  Very Happy
