A  fried  was  visiting  me  and  we  were  talking  about  my  tank.  Some  how  the  conversation  went  to  see  if  the  fish  can  recognise  me.  I  told  him  yes  they  always  came  up  to  me  when  I  went  near  the  tank.  I  went  to  the  tank  and  all  the  fish  came  towards  me  and  when  I  walked  around  the  tank,  they  all  followed  me.  He  said  may  be  they  recognized  people.  So  I  told  him  to  go  near  the  tank,  as  soon  as  he  got  close  to  the  tank  all  my  tangs  took  off  and  hid  in  the  rocks  but  my  chromis  and  wrasses  were  swimming  around  just  fine.

AHAs  anyone  had  experience  like  this  where  the  big  fish  recognized  you  and  not  the  smaller  fish?

Well  i  do  agree  with  you.  The  small  fishes  of-course  comes  near  every  body  since  they  are  always  hungry.  But  can't  say  this  for  my  parrot  FH.  He  thinks  I  am  his  mortal  enemy,  every  time  I  come  near  he  flares  up  and  attacking  my  reflection  on  the  glass,  can't  even  put  my  hand  inside  the  tank,  will  bite  me.  But  yes  my  Oscar  pair  is  very  nice  and  would  follow  me  form  one  end  to  the  other  begging  for  food.  They  do  associate  the  primary  feeder  for  food.  I  still  miss  my  JD  for  this  behavior.  One  very  smart  chap  he  was.

Almost  all  cichlids  respond  to  movement  towards  front-glass,  mainly  in  search  for  food.  Hybrids  respond  for  biting  etc.  Chuckle

But  Oscars'  response  is  something  intelligent  amongst  all.  IMO  they  have  ability  to  recognize  familiar  faces  &  react  in  various  ways  to  their  owners.  And  most  importantly,  their  response  is  not  always  for  food.  They  do  get  really  excited  to  see  owners,  particularly  when  you  are  back  from  office,  vacation  etc.

I  cannot  say  they  recognise  your  face,  but  your  fish  do  recognise  you  as  an  individual  separate  from  other  people  who  enter  the  room.

They  also  do  come  to  know  where  you  keep  their  food;  even  if  it  is  on  the  other  side  of  the  room.  As  soon  as  I  open  the  food  drawer,  all  the  fishes  in  the  several  aquariums  across  the  room  crowd  the  aquarium  front  in  anticipation,  long  before  I  approach  them  (even  when  it  is  not  feeding  time  and  I  only  opened  the  drawer  to  store  fresh  food).

Some  of  the  fishes  do  keep  an  eye  on  you  as  you  go  about  your  chores  in  their  room.

yes  my  freind  ,  fish  also  have  a  little  iq,  they  seem  to  recognize  patterns,  some  people  have  trained
gold  fish  to  play  tricks  just  like  a  dog, they  also  sense  vibrations  through  the  lateral  line,  if  your  freind  was  heavier  or  lighter  than  u  then  they  will  recognize  u  or  him  blind  folded,

Well  my  experience  is  kinda  mixed  up.  my  angels  and  oscars  have  always  come  up  to  the  surface  when  anyone  came  near.  but  the  angels  are  a  step  ahead.  when  i  wake  up  in  the  morning  (my  bed  is  in  front  of  the  tank   Smile  a  few  feet  away),  even  if  i  do  not  approach  the  tank,  they  will  get  to  front.  Might  it  be  because  the  first  thing  I  do  in  d  morning  is  to  feed  them?

And  about  the  fish  recognising  the  owner,  how  old  were  the  fish  that  could  show  the  behavior?  mine  were  below  one  year.

The  basic  recognition  for  any  fish  be  it  FH,  Oscar  or  Discus  is  food.  They  have  the  IQ  to  associate  movement  patterns  with  food.  Hence,  we  have  a  feeling  that  our  fish  recognises  us.  My  FH  has  a  peculiar  habit.  It  people  whom  he  likes  go  near  him,  he  responds  but  with  others  he  just  turns  his  head  the  other  side  and  goes  near  the  filter  to  hide  himself.

Different  fish  have  different  response  to  stimuli

my  kitties  in  the  pond  know  it  is  lunch  time  when  i  go  near  the  pond,  they  come  up  to  the  surface  to  check.

my  shovel  nose  comes  to  the  surface  only  in  the  dark,  and  if  some  one  comes  close,  which  is  usually  me  with  feeders,  it  positions  itself  right  where  i  release  the  feeders  and  catches  them  right  outta  the  bag

my  FH  hates  every  one  goes  all  out  berserk  when  some  one  goes  near  the  tank,  whether  it  be  new  comers  or  the  usual  ones,  but  when  i  open  the  lid  in  the  after  noon  it  knows  it  is  dinner  time  and  waits  for  food  quite  patiently  and  if  i  open  the  hood  in  the  day  time,  it  knows  i  am  about  to  clean  the  tank  and  waits  to  try  and  get  a  shot  at  me

the  arowana  is  just  plain  irritating  fella  who  just  is  scared  of  anything  that  comes  near  the  tank,  whether  it  be  me  or  any  one,  but  in  the  evening  he  knows  its  dinner  time

my  asian  red  tailed  catfish  hides  all  day  or  punishes  anything  in  the  tank  coming  too  close  to  its  hiding  place,  but  the  moment  the  lights  are  out,  he  comes  out  of  his  hiding  place  to  grab  all  that  massivore  that  is  dumped  in  its  tank.

my  plecos  and  my  other  growing  out  bichirs  are  just  plain  scared  of  anything,  even  dinner  time  they  wait  for  a  good  long  time  before  they  actually  come  out  and  check  for  food

my  auranti  comes  out  in  the  front  to  see  why  i  switched  on  the  light,  and  if  i  don't  put  food  some  time  soon,  he  starts  banging  at  the  glass.

so  all  in  all,  everyone  knows  what  represents  food  and  thats  the  only  thing  they  care  about,  like  my  aurantirecognises  whats  for  dinner,  if  its  the  pink  box  he  knows  its  shrimp  and  is  all  excited,  but  when  i  bring  in  the  green  bag,  which  he  knows  is  cichlid  staple,  he  isn't  that  happy,  and  when  he  sees  the  red  bag  he  is  all  happy  for  cichlid  gold(floating)

i  have  also  read  where  a  fish  keeper  used  to  treat  his  oscar  when  ever  the  fish  used  to  ring  a  bell  installed  in  the  tank,  the  oscar  kept  on  ringing  the  bell  and  eventually  the  fella  had  to  remove  the  bell  to  get  a  good  night  sleep.

I  don't  know  if  they  recognize  me.  But  all  my  fish  associate  me  with  frozen  or  live  feed.   Chuckle

My  boy,  Pandian,  normally  feeds  them  only  dry  stuff  unless  I  make  it  a  point  to  tell  him.  While  I  always  feed  them  frozen  or  live  worms.
