These  ceramic  rings  are  not  porus.  They  just  work  like  tubes.  Yes  these  are  the  same  used  in  heaters.
I  have  a  serious  doubt  about  water  filter  candles  because.
 1.  They  will  choke,  these  are  meant  for  filtering  potable  water  supplied  by  municipal  corporation,  does  not  contain  as  much  physical  impurities  as  a  planted  tank  might.
 2.  Their  filteration  rate  is  too  slow.

What  I  meant  was  the  time  this  filter  takes  to  clear  the  water  and  filter  all  the  essentials....BTW  what  is  your  water  changing  cycle  (daily  -days-weeks).  The  main  PITA  is  ammonia  Smile

Sorry  Percy,  I  missed  this  thread.
My  tank  was  very  very  dirty  after  dismantling  the  matten  filter.  More  dirty  than  you  can  think  of.  95%  of  the  mulm  was  cleaned  in  30-45  minutes  flat.
The  rest  is  still  lying  on  the  substrate  trapped  between  plants.  Will  clean  it  tomorrow  with  next  WC.
Normally  my  WC  schedule  is  thrice  a  week  but  these  days  had  been  a  bit  lazy  and  most  of  my  time  was  taken  by  the  sump  so  it  was  once  a  week  last  month.  No  probs.  however.

My  angels  have  gone  mad  after  I  installed  the  sump.  Every  day  I  see  them  spawn  on  one  leaf  or  other.  But  these  youngsters,  they  can't  take  care  of  their  eggs  very  well,  and  these  god  damned  Suchitsura  sp.,  they'll  always  find  a  way  to  steal  the  eggs.  :)

I  worked  for  day-night  and  only  Garoth  and  few  others  have  shown  interest  in  the  setup.
If  you  don't  like  it,  criticize  it,  but  at  least  give  me  some  inputs.   Wall Bang

 Hi  Saurabh,

If  I  remember  reading  the  thread  correctly,  you  mentioned  that  you  picked  up  the  rings  from  an  electrical  shop,  what  should  we  ask  for  in  the  electrical  shop.  Can  you  please  post  a  photo  showing  just  these  rings.  Would  like  to  see  if  I  can  get  them  for  my  filter  as  well.

 Thanks!!

is  the  water  dull?  does  it  have  a  smog-like  colour?...  then  you  will  have  to  play  with  the  media  by  changing  their  chambers..  this  plays  a  very  important  role  IMO  Smile  .

Interesting  venture   Thumb Up  .   As  Garothmaan  says,  if  the  ceramic  rings  are  not  porous,  don't  use.  Instead,  you  can  use  brick  pieces.  You  can  change  it  next  time  you  clean  your  filter.

I  asked  the  electrical  shop  for  the  ceramic  rings  used  in  heaters.

What  does  porous  mean,  if  that  means  water  should  pass  through  it  then  yes  these  are  porous.
Since  these  are  rings,  they  have  a  tunnel  and  the  water  easily  flows  through  it.
Since  it  is  made  of  ceramic,  walls  are  not  porous.

These  rings  when  laid  on  each  other  would  never  make  a  perfect  tunnel  or  pipe.  The  water  would  flow  from  one  ring  to  another  in  a  haphazard  manner  and  thus  filtering  physical  impurities.
The  area  of  such  rings  is  approx.  double  the  size  of  solid  grain  of  same  size  which  gives  more  surface  area  for  the  bacteria  to  bloom.

I  did  not  have  the  courage  to  photograph  the  mess,  I'm  telling  you,  nothing  was  visible  in  it.
here  is  a  photo  after  around  20-25  minutes  of  mess

The  second  one  was  taken  around  10  hours  later

Yes  I  understand  that  the  tank  looks  quite  ugly  with  the  plant  setup.  But  I  was  so  absorbed  in  the  sump  that  I  had  no  time  to  trim  or  even  to  clean  the  outer  walls  of  the  tank.

Here  is  a  pic.  of  my  angels  spawning.  Excuse  me  for  the  image  quality.

If  any  of  you  try  such  a  sump  yourself  please  be  sure  to  use  glass  instead  of  acrylic.  Acrylic  is  of  course  expensive.  If  you  insist  on  acrylic,  go  for  6  mm  sheet...

Also  remember  to  keep  the  o/p  pipe  from  the  sump  just  floating  on  the  surface  of  water,  never  try  to  submerge  it  inside  the  water  column.  See  the  pic

If  the  pipe  is  submerged  in  the  water  column  the  water  head  would  be  too  much  and  water  would  not  overflow  from  sump  to  tank  rather  it  would  overflow  from  the  sump's  brim.

It  would  be  a  cool  idea  to  sacrifice  last  6"  in  a  2ft  tank  and  use  it  for  making  such  a  sump  within  a  tank.  A  few  alterations  in  the  design  would  make  it  possible.

 Dear  Saurabh,

Your  tank  looks  great  man.  Thumb Up
Thanks  for  the  valuable  1st  hand  suggestions  too.

I  agree  with  1st  half,  but  dint  understand  the  2nd,  just  like  others.

As  others  have  asked  regarding  the  pores,  they  asked  to  know  about  the  porous  parts  where  the  bacteria  can  hold/hook/grove  up.
Even  I  feel  if  it  were  porous  the  surface  area  would  have  doubled(?or  quadrupled?)  over  your  calculated  area  of  ring  Smile
+  better  dirt  accumulation  in  the  pores.

 Thank  you.

 Thank  you.

You  are  right  Saikumar  in  that  point.  But  such  a  ceramic  ring  was  subject  to  availability.
At  first  the  idea  of  broken  earthen  lamps  came  to  my  mind  but  I  rubbished  it  thinking  about  it  might  choke  at  some  point  of  time  then  there  was  an  option  of  custom  made  earthen  rings,  the  same  as  the  ones  used  in  smoking  chilam.  Just  smaller  in  size.  But  there  was  no  potter  near  my  house.  All  the  potters  live  around  25kms  away  from  the  city.  I  got  connected  on  phone  with  one,  he  agreed  to  make  500  pieces  according  to  my  specifications  but  wanted  to  see  first  what  he  has  to  make.
You  would  not  have  an  idea  of  summers  in  Lucknow.  I  had  no  courage  to  travel  25kms  on  a  summer  noon  in  a  dusty  village  road.  Just  gave  up  the  idea  and  went  along  with  these  rings.  Apart  from  these  I  have  a  lot  of  scrubs  and  sand  for  the  bacteria  to  bloom.  Moreover  I  have  put  air  stones  in  all  the  chambers  for  the  sump  to  breathe.  This  is  sufficient  I  think.  For  betterment  sky  is  the  limit.  I'd  a  lot  more  plans  for  the  sump  but  most  are  subject  to  availability  and  needs  more  of  my  time.  Sad
