Muddasir  here  is  the  essentials  for  the  Laterite  base  mix.

 For  a  3  x  2  Footprint  Aquarium

 Laterite  -  10  liters
 Sphagnum  Peat  -  1  liter
Old  substrate  1-2  liters  or  fresh  filter  mulm

 Hydrated  Lime  -  1  teaspoon
Bone  Meal  -  3  Table  spoons,  45  gms
 Micros  (  Microsol  B  or  similar)  -  1/2  teaspoon.

Boil  all  the  peat,  add  all  ingredients  to  laterite,  mix  well.
Keep  for  a  couple  of  weeks,  don't  let  the  mix  dry  out  keep  it  moist.
Then  use  as  bottom  2  cm  of  the  substrate.

The  last  three  are  not  strictly  needed,  if  you  can  lay  your  hands  on  them,  well  and  good.

If  you  can  find  some  other  brand  of  peat  which  will  give  you  Tea  Colored  water  when  you  boil  it  then
that  is  good  enough.  No  Tea  Colored  water  on  boiling  -  it's  useless.

I  have  added  KNO3  too  to  the  substrate  but  it  is  eventually  of  no  good,  as  the  nitrates  will  get  into  the  water
as  soon  as  the  aquarium  is  filled  and  will  provide  nutrients  for  a  few  days  at  the  most.
Pot  Humate  and  Pot  Fulvate  /  Fulvic  acid  are  optional  (impossible  to  find),  the  peat  will  do  the  job  very  effectively.  So  don't  bother  with  them.
3-indole-acetic  acid  -  is  a  plant  hormone,  which  promotes  root  growth.  Again  very  expensive  and  difficult  to  find.  Not  necessary.

 deba,

If  you  can  afford  a  good  diffuser  like  the  ADA  one  and  follow  their  tank  size  specifications  then  it's  more  than  enough.
ADA  diffusers  are  the  best  I  have  used.
There  are  other  brands  in  the  market,  that  appear  as  good  to  me,  I  haven't  tried  any,  but  seen  tanks  with  them,
and  they  seem  to  do  the  job  as  effectively.  Don't  ask  me  for  the  names,  I  can't  remember,  The  Aquarium  Store  had  them  in  stock,
the  last  time  I  was  there.

Thanks  a  lot  Madan  Sir,  i  will  be  trying  the  mix  soon  but  where  can  i  find  the  good  peat  moss?  and  suppose  if  i  get  it  now,  how  long  can  i  keep  it  without  it  losing  its  efficiency.
Also,  kindly  tell  that  where  was  the  Peat  moss  for  the  'Aquarium  Store'  tank  sourced  from(also  if  i  can  get  the  rough  cost  then  it  will  be  helpful).

Dev,  its  me   Chuckle  and  i  love  the  moniker  which  Tirtha  has  been  quite  generous  to  provide  with.

about  ISTA  diffuser,  I'd  say  it  is  value  for  money  as  it  has  check  valve,  bubble  counter  and  some  real  great  diffusing.  even  with  algae  on  it,  it  still  manages  to  give  some  fine  bubbles.  the  only  trouble  is  that  the  fine  mist  sometimes  bothers  me  as  my  tank's  filter  flow  is  towards  the  diffuser  and  the  mist  is  all  over  the  place.  so  for  photos  etc.  you  have  to  switch  off  the  filter.

Mudassir,  Good  peat  has  been  formed  over  centuries.
You'll  waste  away  and  turn  to  peat  before  peat  looses  it's  efficiency.

As  for  the  Aquarium  Store  substrate  the  peat  came  from  me.
Prabhu  has  promised  to  source  Sphagnum  Peat  get  in  touch  with  him.

yep  Sir,  i  will  call  up  Prabhu  regarding  the  peat  moss.  and  i  had  heard  about  the  peat  but  i  didn't  knew  the  peat  which  we  will  use  will  be  like  the  one  found  in  Britain  peat  swamps.

i  was  considering  it  to  be  more  refined  form  of  locally  available  peat  moss  which  we  usually  see  some  varieties  of  orchids  tied  to(the  thing  wrapped  up  in  a  stick  and  having  some  creeper  tied  to  it).

i  think  that  if  it  is  that  peat  then  the  costs  will  be  little  higher.

Yo!  That  thing  orchids  are  tied  to  is  not  to  be  used.
That  is  Sphagnum  Moss  which  has  to  decay  for  a  century  or  more  in  bogs  naturally  and  is  then  converted  to  Sphagnum  "Peat"

Google  "Canadian  Sphagnum  Peat  Moss"  for  your  answers.

 Prabhu's  ID  is  "supra".

As  for  where  else  you  can  get  good  peat,  right  now  I  have  no  idea.
I  ordered  my  stock  from  Amazon,  the  shipping  kills  you.
