Today  i  was  shocked  to  find  9  nos  of  puntius  denisonii  at  a  LFS.  On  a  quick  glance  it  appeared  to  be  denisonii  to  me  but  i  was  a  little  unsure  as  i  did  not  expect  them  to  be  in  a  LFS.  On  asking  the  shop  keeper  my  doubts  were  confirmed  when  he  said  its  denisonii.  Shop  keeper  did  not  seem  to  be  too  knowledgeable  as  he  said  they  were  of  the  tetra  variety.  I  knew  they  belong  to  the  barb  variety.  In  a  state  of  shock  i  forgot  to  ask  the  price.  My  thoughts  were  to  post  this  find  on  this  forum  and  ask  everyone's  opinion  on  what  we  could  do  to  save  these  endangered  fishes  from  the  LFS.

Moderators,  please  move  the  post  to  the  right  section  as  necessary.

Hi!!!  F.Y.I.  Puntius  denisonii  is  available  at  most  LFS  in  Mumbai.  You  can  easily  buy  them  at  Kurla  shops  for  a  very  cheap  rate.  I  know  that  they  are  an  endangered  species,  but  they  are  so  beautiful  and  look  very  good  in  planted  tanks.  They  are  hard  to  resist.

 Regards

 Sandeep

They  are  quite  common  nowadays  and  I  heard  breeders  have  started  raising  their  stocks  from  sometime,  so  comparably  less  chances  that  you'll  encounter  wild  fishes  in  trade.

And  I  agree,  they  definitely  look  gorgeous  in  large  planted  tanks.

P  denisonii  are  being  bred  in  captivity  and  also  being  released  in  the  wild  by  a  few  responsible  breeders.
In  fact  export  of  P  denisonii  too  have  come  down  to  almost  a  stand  still.

Unless  you  go  out  there  and  collect  P  denisonii,  you'll  not  get  wild  caught  ones  any  more.

That's  a  good  news  indeed!  No  threats  for  the  natural  habitat  can  we  boast?

I  am  sure  you  cannot  see  if  you  get  a  pair.  You  can  get  two  but  not  for  sure  a  pair.
On  the  other  hand  you  should  never  keep  less  than  7  -  10  of  them  in  one  tank.
