All  the  best.  Are  you  going  to  take  the  earlier  route  or  the  one  that  we  took.
I'm  not  sure  if  you  will  find  Horadandia  on  the  route  you  took  last  time.

I  spoke  to  Prem  and  he  refused  to  come  unless  the  lake  offered  Central  American  Cichlids.  I  haven  spoken  to  the  Barilius  Tormentor  yet.

Without  further  ado......  the  first  of  hopefully  many  chronicles  to  come  from  the  Chembarambakkam  Lake.  For  more  info  on  the  lake  click  here  :  Chembarambakam  Lake

Only  Prasoon  and  me  went  on  this  trip  and  we  were  accompanied  by  Marcus  and  Chinny,  a  coupla  friends.  Chinny  by  the  way  is  into  snakes  and  is  working  on  the  snaked  around  Chennai  at  the  moment.  I  guessed  this  when  he  stopped  his  vehicle  and  ran  back  hurriedly  to  pick  up  a  roadkill.

Prasoon  managed  to  wake  up  on  time  and  picked  me  up  at  5:00  Am.  He  promised  English  music  and  played  some  music  he  got  from  Sai.  Sai  ,  if  you  are  reading  this,  I  seriously  think  you  need  help.  4  hours  of  Techno  with  Daft  Punk  and  Akon   (what  a  disturbing  voice)  thrown  in  here  and  there  left  me  gasping  for  breath.

We  met  Marcus  and  Chinny  at  Guindy  at  around  5:45  AM  and  proceeded  towards  the  lake.

A  few  pics  of  the  story  so  far  :

Quite  a  nice  view  aint  it????

The  first  spot.  I  know  it  doesnt  look  like  much.  I  had  collected  here  a  few  months  ago  with  the  other  Madras  guys.  I  was  not  in  a  position  to  collect  as  I  was  severely  dehydrated.  I  just  sat  in  the  car.

L-R  :  Chinny,  Marcus,  Me  taking  a  look  at  the  snake  and  2  local  people  out  to  prove  old  age  doesnt  necessarily  mean  obesity.

Disclaimer  :   I  dont  have  a  beer  belly  at  all.  Its  just  that  a  sudden  gust  of  wind  blew  and  inflated  my  shirt.  Seriously.

 Collecting

 The  Spot

 Still  collecting

The  first  dip  (read  wild  gyration)  of  my  trusty  old  hand  net  yielded  2  Mystus  specimens.  And  more  dips  kept  adding  to  the  number.  They  Mystus  are  likely  Mystus  bleekeri  or  an  extremely  similar  looking  species.  The  range  of  Mystus  bleekeri  was  extended  to  Tamil  Nadu  a  few  years  ago.

And  yes  the  Badis  badis  from  around  here  was  collected  too.  Around  half  a  dozen  were  collected  by  the  end  of  the  trip.  Some  were  a  nice  red  in  colour.  They  are  currently  with  Prasoon.
The  other  species   from  the  first  spot:

 Channa  gachua

 Pseudosphromenus  cupanus

 [i]Caridina  gracilirostris
 (???)

 Mahindra  bumpyrideensis

 Puntius  dorsalis

 Oryzias  dancena

 Rasbora  daniconius

 Esomus  danricus

 Puntius  ticto

 Lepidocephalichthys  guntea

 Etroplus  maculatus

No  prices  for  guessing  what  this  is!!!!!!!!

 Hemochromis  bimaculatus

 Mystus  cf.bleekeri  (???)

Subcker  Cat  /  Pelco  /  Scavenger  Fish  /  Rocket  Fish  /  Alligator  Fish  /  Tank  Cleaner

 Other  species  sighter  here  :

 Glossogobius  giuris
 Gambusia

 Any  others  I  missed????

We  then  decided  to  move  towards  another  spot  and  took  a  look  at  a  fisherman's  catch  on  the  way.

 Jalebi!!!!!!!

 Notopterus  notopterus

 Glossogobius  giuris

The  view  from  the  top  of  the  reservoir.

Another  view  from  the  top  of  the  reservoir.

A  view  of  a  random  guys  derriere  while  he  was  busy  packing  his  fish.  Prasoon  is  responsible  for  this  shady  pic.

We  were  just  locating  the  nearest  fast  food  from  the  top  to  grab  breakfast  though  it  looks  like  we  were  doing  something  significant.

We  headed  for  breakfast  not  to  a  food  place  but  to  a  small  shady  spot  .  Marcus  had  bought   a  lotta  food  for  us.  Thanks  for  that.  Bread,  omelette's,jam, butter  biscuits  etc.

After  a  longish  break,  we  headed  to  the  spot.  Expectations  were  high  as  the  first  spot  had  been  quite  fruitful.

 The  spot

A  small  pond  next  to  the  spot.

Another  small  pond  next  to  the  spot.

A  photo  that  signifies  absolutely  nothing.

 Collecting

 Muddy  waters

 What  plant  is  this???

 Ehirava  fluviatilis

The  long  trudge  back  home.  The  river  bottom  was  just  slush.  Slush  and  nothing  else.  Just  goddamn  slush.  It  was  impossible  to  walk.  The   other  2  were  used  to  walking  here  and  hence  walked  quite  comfortably  while  I  was  on  my  way  to  my  muddy  grave.

 Oreochromis  mossambicus

 Notopterus  notopterus

 A  third  spot  yielded  :

 Mystus  Sp

Puntius  orphoides  (A  new  record  in  India  or  just  Tamil  Nadu???  )

 Puntius  vittatus
 Chela  cachius
   Esomus  barbatus
   Rasbora  cauverii

 Puntius  chola
 Puntius  sophore
 Puntius  sharmai
 Puntius  filamentosus

 Amblypharyngodon  mola
 Aplocheilus

A  snake  which  Chinny  tried  to  catch  and  almost  landed  face  first  in  the  water.  Prasoon  entered  the  water  here  and  he  sunk  in.  Really,  truly  and  seriously.  he  just  kept  sinking  and  thats  when  he  realised  he  needed  to  go  on  a  diet.  Awesome  timing.
 Any  others  I  missed???

Done  with  this  spot,  Prasoon  and  me  decided  to  wrap  up  as  we  had  promised  to  have  lunch  at  our  respective  homes.

This  plot  was  foiled  as  we  stopped  at  the  nearest  shop  for  some  cold  beer  and  the  next  closest  biryani  place  for  a  few  biryanis  with  Prasoon  forcing   /  encouraging  me  to  blaspheme  and  eat  biryani.

Thus  ended  the  great  saga  of  the  Chembarambakkam  trip.  The  greatest  way  to  finish  a  trip.  Meat  and  beer.

More  trips  on  their  way  soon.  Watch  this  space  for  updates  on  the  same.

Special  thanks  to  Marcus  for  showing  us  around  and  for  the  fish  ID's  and  especially  the  breakfast.

Signing  off  for  now  with  this.................................................................

Another  pic  that  holds  absolutely  no  significance  at  all.

 Take  Outs  :

 1)  Definitely  worth  a  lotta  visits.
 2)  All  the  usual  Chennai  folks  who  missed  this  trip  will  get  some  rather  rude  messages  from  me  sometime  soon.
 3)  One  condition  for  the  trip  is  that  it  has  to  end  the   method  illustrated  above.
