Use  waterlilies,  marginal  and  Bog  plants.  It  is  how  you  place  the  plants.  Generally  slots  say  a  foot  deep  and  wide  are  made  at  regular  intervals  mostly  on  the  concreted  pond  floor.  The  plant  baskets  are  lowered  into  these  slots.

The  Koi  should  be  kept  well  fed.  Or  they  will  uproot  any  plant  and  create  general  mayhem.

A  pond  in  Bangalore  using  water  lilies,  marginal  and  bog  plants.
P.S  This  is  the  backyard  of  the  house.

Really  nice.  Is  that  your  backyard  Trevor  sir?  Wink  .
One  more  query:  As  said  in  above  posts,  2  feet  is  too  less  and  a  common  mistake.  What  is  the  appropriate(  or  bare  minimum  or  safe)  depth  for  a  pond  one  should  have?

 Thanks  Trevor,

Nice  pond,  but  water  looks  murky.  Please  give  the  name  of  the  plants  used.

Nope  not  my  backyard.  Its  the  back  yard  of  our  popular  underwear  manufacturer.  The  brand  name  rhymes  with  the  name  of  our  national  game.  Got  it.  Chuckle

The  pond  should  have  a  depth  of  minimum  three  feet.  I  would  prefer  five  feet  for  an  ideal  pond  but  then  I'm  afraid  most  guys  would  convert  the  pond  at  that  size  to  a  swimming  pool.  Chuckle

Sahajravi,  The  soil  used  for  potting  plants  is  a  clay  imported  from  Kerala.  The  murky  water  is  due  to  the  transfer  of  plants  to  the  other  ponds  and  re-potting.  There  are  a  total  of  five  ponds.  Two  in  front  of  the  house.

Frankly  do  not  like  the  pond.  If  I  have  a  pond  someday  this  is  what  I  will  not  be  doing.  Its  almost  synthetic,  with  nothing  natural  feel  to  it,  IMHO.  Would  you  do  your  pond  like  this  Trevor?

 Hi  Ravi,
You  have  a  wonderful  pond,  there  is  NO  natural  way  to  keep  the  water  clear.  I  will  suggets  you  to  have  a  drum  filter,  if  u  dont  want  to  invest  a  lot  of  money  in  filteration.  Check  this  vedio  and  let  me  know  the  water  clarity  of  this  pond  which  is  14  feet  in  length,  3  feet  depth  and  3  feet  breadth.

Hi  all!
I  have  pond  in  our  garden  approximate  size  is  15  X  5  feet  -  2  feet  deep,  we  have  many  fish  mostly  koi  and  others.  The  water  is  green,  we  would  like  have  a  clean  water  so  that  we  can  see  the  fishes.  Setting  up  a  filter  may  be  expensive  for  the  big  pond.  Is  there  a  natural  way  to  keep  the  water  clear?  Will  Algae  eaters  help  to  clean?  I  have  uploaded  our  pond  photos  for  you  view.  Need  help.
We  have  lotus  in  our  pond  and  a  bridge  gos  across.  We  have  panted  lotus  and  plants  in  pots  and  the  bottom  has  no  soil,  just  concrete  floor.
 Thanks,
 Ravi

hey  ravi  i  am  having  fishes  in  pond  for  more  than  a  year  .my  water  is  always  clear  but  70%  of  the  surface  is  covered   by  lilly  and   lotus  leaves.  the  only  difference  is  i  have  river  gravel  and  clay  as  the  substrate.  as  what  above  friends  have  said
the  only  option  is  u  have  to  start  from  fist.  stock  all  your  fishes  in  a  tank, dry  your  pond  for  couple  of  days  make  sure  u  remove  the  algae  completely  .Add   clay  as  the  substrate(best  for  growing  lotus  and  lilly)  and  fill  water.
let  your  pond  cycle  for  2  days  with  some  small  fishes  like  mollies.  u  can  add  your  koi  then.  top  up  your  pond  2-3  times  a  week.
Add  more  plants  (lotus  leaves  will  stop  some  amount  of  sunlight)
u  ll  be  happy  with  your  pond  like  me  Thumbs Up
