1>  Rose  Red  -  Its  a  throwback  of  san  merah  and  display  stress  bars.  My  observation  is  that  the  red  rose  does  not  have  uniform  color  as  San  Merah.

2>  San  Merah  -  Originally  developed  by  Al  San  and  his  aim  was  to  develop  a  strain  with  dark  red  without  stress  bars.

3>  Red  Passion  (Created  by  Ivan  Seah)  -  These  are  red  in  color  with  golden  as  base  color.  Ivan's  site  has  got  good  information  on  this  strain.  My  observation,  in  comparison  with  melon  variants,  these  have  got  golden/orange  eye  rings  whereas  melons  have  got  red  eye  rings.

4>  Super  Melon  /  Red  Melon   -  These  have  got  uniformally  distributed  red  color.

5>  Yellow  face  Red  Melon  -  As  names  suggests,  these  are  red  melons  with  yellow  face  (till  gill  covers)

6>  White  face  Red  Melon  -  These  are  red  melons  with  white  face  (till  gill  covers)

7>  Red  Doll  -  I've  not  seen  this  discus  in  person.  I  guess,  its  another  fancy  name  given  to  cross  of  Yellow  face  Melon  X  Passion.

 HTH

I  think  the  San  Merah  was  developed  from  a  cross  between  Rose  Red  x  Wild  Alenquer.  Rose  Red  was  developed  from  Virgin  red  x  Barless  Brown  and  Virgin  red  from  Ghost  x  Brown  discus.
The  barless  brown  based  red  discus  developed  in  Hong  Kong  was  called  as  Red  cover  but  i'm  not  sure  of  the  history  behind  it

The  different  melons  are  difficult  to  tell  apart  with  their  inclination  to  intensify  coloration  with  color  feeding.  You  might  find  the  color  of  the  melons  differ  based  on  their  genetic  makeup  (Golden  or  PB  genes)  and  their  names  are  based  on  what  the  breeder  or  more  usually  the  broker  wants  to  call  it  to  make  the  fish  more  marketable.

The  red  doll  that  I  know  of  is  the  White  face  Red  Marlboro  discus  which  is  a  solid  Pigeon  blood.

Beta,  thanks  for  the  pics.  As  I  said,  San  Merah  does  not  have  stress  bars  however,  Rose  reds  do  have  those.  I  love  San  merah  wish  to  have  good  quality  of  those.

Thanks  Beat  &  Adesh  for  the  explaination  .

I  am  not  expert  on  Genetic,  but  will  try  to  give  some  inputs  which  I  read  and  understand  little.

Actually  every  discus  has  its  own  characteristic  feature,  which  you  can  see  on  that  fish  and  accordingly  you  can  name  that  discus  .Eg  when  you  say  Leopard  Snake  Skin  (14  bars),  you  will  find  spots  like  Leopards  and  Pattern  like  Snake  Skin  on  their  forehead.  How?  Because  it  is  developed  by  crossing  Leopard  and  Snake  Skin.
So  you  should  have  some  idea  on  genetic  makeup  of  that  fish  to  identify  or  differentiate  it  with  others.

Now  coming  back  to  your  question  what  is  the  difference  among  the  discus  you  listed  .
If  you  have  rough  idea  of  how  these  strains  have  been  developed  ,  what  different  line  has  been  used  ,  their  characteristic  features  etc  then  it  is  very  easy  to  identify  the  difference  .

Rose  Red  :  Virgin  Red  x  Brown  =  Rose  Red

In  olden  days  there  were  mostly  brown  discus  .  Some  barless  discus  was  also  found  during  those  days  from  these  brown  discus  spawn.
Some  breeders  developed  Virgin  Red  discus  in  Penang  with  Ghost  Genes  and  11  stress  bars  .
These  breeders  try  to  remove  these  stress  bars  hence  they  cross  these  Virgin  Red  with  barless  brown  resulting  in  ROSE  RED  .

Since  barless  brown  is  recessive  ,  you  will  always  find  Stress  bars  in  Rose  Red  mainly  on  eyes  .

San  Merah   :  Rose  Red  x  Wild  Alenquer  =  San  Merah

Breeder  in  Singapore  crossed  clean  Rose  Red  with  wild  Alenquer  and  got  San  Merah  .  San.  A.H   I  think  is  the  name  of  the  breeder  in  Singapore  ,  who  did  this  crossing  ,  hence  the  name  was  given  to  the  strain  .A  grade  San  Merah  should  not  have  any  stress  bar  around  the  eyes  .

Red  cover   :  This  is  the  different  name  given  for  San  Merah  by  some  breeders  in  Thailand  and  Hong  Kong  .  You  may  find  some  stress  bars  on  body  and  near  eyes.

Red  Golden  Diamond  :  San  Merah  x  Golden
RGD  is  developed  by  crossing  San  Merah  with  Golden  .  This  is  beautiful  fish  with  Golden  Red  on  golden  base  body  with  transparent  anal  and  dorsal  fins  .

Red  Passion  :   Golden  x  Red  Brown  Discus

You  will  find  bright   blood  Red  on  golden  base  .
This  strain  was  developed  by  Ivan  Seah  –  Singapore  .  Ivan  used   Golden  and  Red  Brown  Discus  line  to  develop  this  strain.  By  selective  breeding  he  improved  the  eyes  and  red  color  in  this  discus  .

Melons  /  Super  melons  /  Red  doll  etc   Like  wise  it  goes  to  melons  also  .  some  breeders  tried  different  crossing  and  selective  breeding  with  melons  (  carrying  Pigeon  genes  )   like  golden  etc  and  try  to  minimize  the  peppering  and  improve  Red  color  in  Melons

Another  red  missing  from  above  list  is  'Royal  Red'  which  have  dull  white  face.  This  strain  has  stess-bars  &  red  is  more  visible  from  lateral  line  to  anal  finnage.
Here's  old  pic  of  Royal  Red  juveniles  I  had  few  years  back.

Mortis,  the  one  in  my  avtar  is  not  mine.  I  guess  its  Yellow  Sunshine.

Yogesh,  Per  my  knowledge  red  and  whites  are  cross  of  Melons/Passion  X  Snow  white.  I'm  not  sure  which  strains  are  used  for  making  royal  reds.
