|
|
Hello Everyone,
I replanted my new tank few weeks back with Glosso, Rotalas, anubias,Crypts, Star grass and some others.
I initally found some algae (looks like hair algae, but i am not sure what type of algae is this) on the Glosso, so i started trimming off the algae leaves whenver i find time also during water change. Now, I notice that it is spreading across slowly on the other plants as well. I googled about this and could not conclude on what actually the problem is. Would you please help me / give your suggestions to correct this problem ?
Thanks a lot in Advance.

Nazeem - Add lot of fast growing stem plants and keep up with the water changes. Algae will soon be gone.
Just ensure you have a stable supply of Co2. Incase your using a solenoid, remove it and keep it on 24/7. |

Your light is way too high, reduce it to two numbers T5 HO and that should solve the issue.

Thanks a lot Prem and Vince for your suggestions.
I added lots of stem plants last week. Attached few latest pictures of the tank below.
I have now changed the water (50%) and added Micros and also let the CO2 run 24/7 .
Should continue dosing CSM+B and Iron ?
Also, Could you please let me know if I should reduce the light as well ?
Thanks.

hi,
your filter capacity is also a factor. u need to increase the circulation. |

HI Nazeem,
I have also encountered the hair algae problems in 2 of my new tanks. Both tanks are small. 15 inches, by 14 inches by 12 inches. One has HC and the other has HG and blyxa japonica. Each is approximately 10 gallons. CO2 is around 45 ppm and I dose Ferka fertilizers each week. Presently there are no fish.
I used H2O2 to kill off the algae. What I did was add 5 ml of 20 volume H2O2 (the ones that you can easily get in a chemist shop) into each of the tank with a syringe. After another 12 hours I dosed another 5 ml into each of the tanks. Within 48 hours the hair algae started dying and turning white. In 2 more days the entire hair algae had died and melted away.
It worked for me and it should work for you too. Since it does not contain any chemicals (copper etc), it is not dangerous in the long run. H2O2 will stabilize back to water and oxygen over a 4 hour period.
Cheers,
Vijay. |

Vijay....does dosing with H2O2 affect your fish or inverts? |

Thank you Vijay. Will this affect fishes and shrimps ?
Hi Prem and Vince,
Could you please advise on the lights and Dosing ? Thanks a lot.

H2O2 is only a temp solution, you have to tackle the root cause.
Are you not dosing Macros? Is CO2 30ppm?
Here is a LINK on how to dose nutrients.
I suggested to reduce light as with high light, the plant demand for nutrients are more and any slight imbalances is gonna end in algae.
Use to a drop checker as a CO2 indicator than bubbles per second.
Cheers

@Zakk and @ Baby.
I do not have any fish or invert in both of these tanks. The CO2 is almost 45 ppm. I am blasting the tank with CO2 so that the plants grow like crazy and are established. Once that is done in a months time, i shall reduce the CO2 to around 25 ppm levels and introduce the fish and the inverts. Planning on RCS, Amano shrimps and Cherry barbs in one tank and Mountain minnows in the other.
What the H2O2 does is it takes out the hair algae. Once that is clean and the plants have settled down and the inverts are introduced and with proper dosing of ferts, the root cause (nutrient imblance) would be taken care of. This approach helps when you have algae hitch hiking with the plants for any new setup.
But have read that for fish this dosing levels does not do any harm, but have to be careful with the inverts.
Cheers,
Vijay. |

A few Queries
Aren’t you under filtered?
Were you changing water more frequently at the beginning?
You are dosing Phosphate and Nitrate into a newly set up ADA AS II tank?
Is your reactor big enough to handle the 5-6 BPS that you are pumping in, or is it belching CO2 bubbles from the outlet? {Is that CO2 reactor a Dymax DF 101?}
Is the outflow from the reactor distributed evenly in the tank?
Wouldnt it be better to split the dosing of Macros into twice or thrice per week?
May be dumb queries, but these things crossed my mind when I read your post |
