Hi  Pune  people,  I'm  proposing  a  habitat  study  and  collection  trip  to  the  Kas  Plateau  and  surrounding  areas.  There  are  several  water  bodies,  and  many  many  streams,  some  of  which  are  perennial  along  the  way.  I'm  proposing  two  routes;  we  could  do  either.  the  third  alternative  is  to  stay  put  at  Kas,  which  has  some  very  rare  flowers  in  September,  including  varieties  of  ceropegia  for  those  who're  interested  in  that  sort  of  thing;  plenty  of  aquatic  plants  too,  including  utricularia.

 These  are  the  routes:

 Hi  Abhijit,
I  am  VERY  MUCH  in  for  the  trip  Smile   Both  5th  and  12th,  i  will  keep  free  tentatively.  However  Humaid  wont  be  able  to  make  it  on  the  5th,  owing  to  Ramzan,  12th  is  possible  for  him.
I  guess  we  will  have  to  skip  the  mandatory  sweekar  stop  if  we  are  planning  for  Kaas,  as  an  early  start  will  be  the  best

Rohan,Adesh,Abhiram, hope  you  guys  post  your  availability  status.

I  am  in  tentatively  in  for  both  dates.
I  prefer  a  single  day  trip  though  so  if  you  guys  decide  to  make  it  a  two  day  trip,  I  will  return  back  in  the  evening.
Never  been  to  kaas  so  looking  forward  to  it.

@rohan  its  a  one  day  trip  for  sure;  i  cant  do  two  days  either  (its  another  matter  that  I'd  love  to  :)

@adesh  so  you  got  the  new  macro  lens!  bring  the  lens,  camera  and  you  better  come  along;  plenty  of  macro  photography  options  there;  lots  to  photograph  and  document

@inix  look  forward  to  seeing  either  or  both  of  you  :)

@alpha  great  to  know  you're  in;  so  is  Abhiram  I  guess...  I'll  be  seeing  you  guys  this  evening, right?  we  can  talk  then.

@humaid  it'd  be  great  if  you  could  come,  probably  5th  Sunday.  We  could  consider  doing  a  saturday,  4th  which  is  okay  for  me;  but  I'm  not  sure  about  the  others.  If  you  cant  make  it  this  time,  we'll  do  another  trip  over  two/three  days,  into  the  konkan  late  in  september...  let's  go  catch  us  some  killies  Very Happy

Perhaps  some  enticements  are  in  order  :D

check  out  some  pics  taken  with  a  very  rudimentary  camera  some  years  ago.  Just  to  give  you  an  idea  of  what  it's  like  on  the  Kaas  plateau  and  its  vicinity.
A  look  at  the  route  above  will  give  an  idea  of  what's  along  the  way  :)

Kanher  Dam  viewed  from  the  road  to  Kas,  the  road  snakes  along  a  ridgeline  with  massive  igneous  massifs  on  one  side  as  you  approach  Kas.

The  plateau  itself,  composed  of  laterite,  has  a  grassy  covering  and  a  reasonable  number  of  stunted  trees.  I've  seen  lots  of  reptiles  on  this  plateau  over  the  last  15  years,  including  loads  of  snakes.

Kas  lake,  sorrounded  by  forests;  at  about  3750'  MSL,  perhaps  the  highest  lake  in  Maharashtra.
At  this  time  of  the  year,  the  margins  of  the  lake  flood  the  forest.  Lots  of  frogs,  and  various  types  of  fish.  There  is  no  aquaculture  at  Kas  as  far  as  I  know.

Many  streams  along  the  way,  here's  a  couple.  Some  of  these  are  perennial;  I've  encountered  water  there  in  late-May.

Almost  all  streams  have  laterite  bases,  that  makes  it  even  more  interesting.  The  water  is  quite  cold,  and  combined  with  laterite...  its  the  type  of  conditions  we'd  like  in  an  aquarium.

Tanmay  (my  son)  doing  some  exploration  of  his  own  along  one  of  the  channels  that've  been  cut  into  the  rock.

 There  is  varied  plant-life.
 Mosses  and  ferns

Lichens  (i  think)  Abhiram!  help!  :)

Flowering  plants  of  types  I'd  never  even  heard  of,  let  alone  seen.

Fungi  too...  this  one  was  saying  'you  wanna  f***  with  me?  eat  me'

Some  aquatic  plants  I  got  my  hands  on  the  last  time;  with  able  eyes  like  Shubhankar  and  Abhiram,  I'll  bet  we'll  find  many  more.

 Some  random  views...

A  view  of  the  Koyna  Backwater

A  last  piece  of  advice,  do  not  attempt  to  set  up  a  tent  late  in  the  evening,  when  its  15  degrees,  the  wind  howls  at  80  kmph  and  the  rain  feels  like  icicles...  best  sleep  in  the  car.  Smile
you  think  the  location  is  sheltered,  it  isnt  :)

Abhijit,  these  pictures  are  making  me  self-sufficient  to  fight  with  home  minister  Mad  and  get  her  approval  for  this  trip.
