 Dear  all,

I  have  a  planted  tank  with  the  following  setup
 1.Tank  seize:  48X18X24.
2.Substrate:  Laterite  mixed  with  agro  peat  3  inches  covered  with  Â½  inch  large  seized  river  sand.
 3.Lightining:  5  nos.  of  40w.trulite  florescent  lamps.
4.CO2:  injection  from  the  cylinder  through  diffuser.  (Thanks  to  Mr.Rufes  in  getting  me  this  nice  setup)
 5.Filteration:  Dolphin  external  filter.
 6.Duration  of  lightining,  co2  &  filteration:  10  hours/day,  controlled  by  a  timer.
7.PMDD.KNO3  2  teaspns.  &  K2SO4  1  teaspns  during  weekly  water  change  of  50%,  plus  4  ml  solution  of  Microsal-B  &  iron  every  day  after  lights  off  &  water  is  bore  water.
8.Flora:  75%  (Anubia’s,  Bacopa,  Cryptocoryne,  red  lilly,  ludwigia,  Hygrophillias,  echinodorous,  Japonica,  Javafern,  Java  mass,  Riccia,  Giant  hygro,  lace  plant  etc.
 9.Fauna.Around  50  nos.  of  tetra’s.

Recently  I  have  got  problem  in  the  tank.
1.White  spots  have  started  developing  on  a  couple  of  lemon  tetras.
Should  I  use  the  heater  &  increase  the  temp.  of  the  water.  If  so,  will  there  be  any  effect  on  the  plants  growth  or  which  medicine  should  I  use  to  contain  this  disease,  without  affecting  my  plants.

2.Tiny  brown  spots  starts  appearing  on  the  leaves  of  Japonica  &  Giant  hygro  only.Slowly  these  holes  get  enlarged  &  the  total  leaf  starts  decaying.New  shoot  appears  fast  but  within  4  â€“  5  days  these  also  will  be  affected  with  these  brown  spots.Other  plants  are  all  healthy.

Please  suggest  me  the  remedies  to  overcome  these  problems.
 Regards.
 Jayadev

 Hi  javadev,

White  spot  is  a  disease  caused  by  ich.  Raising  the  temperature  to  29  degrees  Celcius,  and  using  medication  such  as  "Rid  all  -  Anti  Ich"  will  help.  But  I  don't  know  if  the  medicine  will  affect  plants  or  not.

As  for  holes  in  leaves,  indicates  potassium  deficiency.  Consider  increasing  your  K2SO4  dosage  slightly.

Brown  spots  may  be  diatoms,  it  is  common  in  newer  tanks,  but  should  go  away  in  sometime.  Also,  you  should  increase  lighting  to  12  hours,  to  imitate  the  cycle  in  nature.

A  succesful  planted  tank  is  a  very  delicate  balance  between  the  right  amount  and  KIND  of  lighting,  water  parameters,  nutrients  in  the  water  column,  and  also  nutrients  in  the  substrate.

I  guess  your  tank  is  pretty  new.  I  suggest  you  plant  all  the  plants  you  can  lay  your  hands  on,  so  all  the  nutrients  you  are  pumping  in,  including  the  CO2,  gets  utilized.

You  shouldnt  dose  any  nutrients  to  a  new  tank  before  it  is  at  least  20  days  or  3  weeks  old.

Then,  from  what  you  say  ,  I  see  a  deficiency  of  nitrates,  and  potassium.  Be  regular  on  your  weekly  water  change  of  80  to  90  percent.  Just  after  the  water  change  add  your  Potassium  Sulfate,  and  Potassium  Nitrate.

In  my  experience  with  planted  tanks,  I  have  learnt  that  you  surely  lose  fish  over  the  first  hundred  days.  After  the  100  days  almost  everything  stabilizes,  and  you  get  used  to  handling  everything,  including  the  dosing,  and  algae  control.  You  can  save  your  display  fish  like  cardinal  tetras,  and  rummy  nose  tetras  for  that  period.  Planted  setups  wouldnt  need  heaters,  if  the  temperature  does  not  drop  below  22  deg  C.

Increase  your  biological  media  to  the  fullest,  to  control  algae.  Ensure  that  all  the  CO2  you  introduce  is  mixed  properly  with  water.  You  can  rest  assured  of  that  if  Rufus  helped  you.  He  is  pretty  experienced  with  CO2,  I  know.

DOnt  worry  about  fish  until  the  first  100  day  period  is  over.  Never  skimp  on  water  changes,  esp  because  you  are  pumping  in  nutrients,  and  CO2.  Water  changes  remove  the  excessive,  or  unused  nutrients,  from  the  water  column,  and  also  remove  rotting,  decayed  leaves.

Maintaining  a  planted  tank,  is  a  tedious  job,  but  the  results  are  mind  blowing,  and  very  very  soul  satisfying!

 Happy  fishkeeping!

 Sorry  Guys,
This  has  nothing  to  do  with  the  answer  -  I  just  could  not  stop  myself  from  pointing  out  that  akudewan  is  a  high  school  student  and  the  first  prompt  answer  to  the  thread  is  his!  -  It  is  guys  like  these  who  can  make  a  difference  -  Keep  up  the  good  work  aku!  Clapping

How  old  is  your  setup  ?
How  long  after  the  initial  setup  did  it  take  for  your  plants  to  show  up  the  deficiencies  ?

what  exactly  is  the  height  of  your  tank  ?  is  it  18"  or  24  "
Reason  i  am  asking  this  is..with  a  height  of  24"  ,flouroscent  lights  are  not  of  that  effective.
A  MH  is  recommended  for  tank  of  such  height  and  if  the  lightis  not  reaching  the  bottom  of  the  tank,  plants  may  not  be  able  to  utilize  the  nutrients  that  you  have  been  dosing.
They  may  not  start  showing  the  symptoms  immediately...as  they  have  reserve  nutrients. The  plants  do  fine  till  their  reserves  get  exhausted.
Thats  the  reason  i  asked  how  long  after  the  tank  was  setup  did  the  plants  started  degrading.

Which  part  of  india  are  you  from  ?Do  you  have  temperature  fluctuations?
Tetras  dont  appreciate  fluctuations  in  temperature  so  a  thermostat  controlled  heater  is  always  recommeneded.
akudewans  suggestions  to  treat  white  spot  is  perfect  but  again  plants  dont  appreciate  high  temmperatures.
So  if  you  could  take  the  affected  fauna  out  and  treat  then  seperately  it  will  be  good.

Thanks  for  the  suggestions.Got  rid  of  the  Fauna  problem  by  increasing  the  temp.  to  28  degrees  &  adding  PIMAFIX  within  a  week  after  the  disease  break.Mr.Nagendra's  advice  did  the  magic.  But  I  lost  about  6  rummy  nose  &  4  lemon  tetras.
Regarding  plants,  I  have  slightly  increased  the  dosage  of  KNO3  &  K2SO4.There  is  improvement  in  the  affected  plants.

Regarding  other  details,  I  am  from  Bangalore  &  into  the  hobby  from  past  1  year.  Got  into  the  planted  tank  madness  from  past  4  months  &  before  coming  into  the  contact  of  IAH,  I  used  to  empty  my  wallet  listening  to  the  LFS  advice.

My  Tank  is  a  part  of  the  showcase  &  the  height  is  21  inches  from  the  top  of  the  laterite.    As  suggested  by  Mr.Rohan,  I  am  planning  to  go  for  MH.

As  of  now  the  tank  is  lush  &  green  &  has  become  an  eye  catcher  to  my  house  hold  who  never  had  any  interest  on  it.  Now  they  remind  me  of  Sunday  water  change  programme.

It  is  really  amazing  to  watch  this  green  box  &  we  feel  proud  to  have  this  wonderful  aquatic  nature  in  our  showcase.
 Regards,
 K.M.Jayadev.
