IMO  i  would  suggest  for  12mm.  It  would  a  little  expensive  but  It'll  provide  you  a  good  safety.  BTW  which  fish  you're  planning  to  keep  in  such  a  monster  tank.  Wait  let  me  guess  'arowana  or  oscar  or  flowerhorn  or  any  other  kind  of  lage  cichlid'.  Cheering

a  minimum  of  12mm  thickness  ,  try  to  get  extra  clear  glass  on  the  front  (  main  side)  it  may  cost  a  bit  more  but  it  will  look  great  with  no  greenish/bluish  fade  ,  u  would  also  require  some  support  clippers  ,  u  can  get  them  made  by  the  blaksmith.
one  more  important  point  will  be  the  stand  ,  what  type  of  stand  u  want  iron  or  wooden??  iron  would  be  better.
also  the  best  filter  i  can  think  for  that  size  tank  will  be  a  sump,
best  of  luck  for  the  moster  tank!!!!!!!  Thumbs Up

12  mm  glass  or  thicker  is  the  only  way  to  go.

all  clear  glass  on  the  sides  where  you  want  to  view  the  tank  from  is  preferable.

if  you  have  an  external  canister  filter  keep  about  3-4  inches  on  each  side  to  allow  the  inflow  and  out  flow  pipes  to  pass.   you  can  also  pass  other  pipes  through  this  like  from  the  CO2  cylinder  or  air  pump,  etc.

the  braces  are  applied  as  follows:
 a)   have  a  small  1x3  in  piece  of  12  mm  glass  stuck  to  the  vertical  panels  of  the  tank  where  ever  you  need  the  brace  1.5  inches  below  the  top  edge  of  the  panel
 b)   each  brace  of  12  mm  glass  should  be  the  of  the  internal  depth  (front  to  back)  dimension  of  the  tank.  and  about  3  inches  wide.
 c)   these  are  stuck  resting  on  the  above  small  pieces  and  stuck  to  them  and  the  vertical  panels  for  extra  support.
 d)   for  an  8  footer  i  would  put  in  4  such  braces  on  the  top  and  another  4  at  the  bottom
 e)   braces  on  the  bottom  do  not  need  the  small  1  inch  pieces  and  can  be  directly  stuck  to  the  bottom  glass  sheet  and  vertical  panels.

im  getting  a  5  footer  made  and  trying  to  drill  the  bottom  glass  so  i  can  fit  PVC  fittings  and  have  completely  concealed  pipes  and  plumbing.   these  look  very  neat  but  are  costly  since  you  have  to  drill  the  base  or  rear  vertical  panel  and  plumb  it  accordingly.

also  the  glass  either  way  at  12  mm  would  be  VERY  HEAVY
