 So,  kurali  it  is!

Yeah,  seeing  a  "true"  known  curmuca  would  be  interesting  for  a  side  by  side  comparison

Ok  Hayath,  that  is  the  fish  in  sent.  .  i  has  grown  and  it  is  from  the  type  locality  of  H  Kurali

So  we  have  confirmed  H  kurali  from  type  locality  .  .  .  i  must  add  great  snaps

There  is  a  vague  snaps  of  Kurali/Curmuca  fish  from  one  more  river

I  would  like  to  see  them  side  by  side  .  .  .  anybody  fishing  in  Vedawathi  river  (Type  locality  of  H  curmuca)

 Thanks  Ashwin!  Smile

Closeups  describing/depicting  key  characteristics  are  super  important,  especially  with  species  which  resemble  each  other  so  closely

I  call  it  H.  thomassi  because....

 1.  The  fish  has  31  lateral  line  scales  ---  only  H.  thomassi  has  less  than  34  lateral  line  scales  (Talwar  &  Jhingran  1991;  Jayaram  1999)
 2.  The  fish  was  collected  in  Mangalore  area---  H  thomassi  is  found  there  (Talwar  &  Jhingran  1991;  Jayaram  1999  and  Menon  1999)
 3.  Scales  with  dark  base---  one  of  key  feature  (Talwar  &  Jhingran  1991;  Jayaram  1999)
 4.  Ashwin  says  its  a  large  fish---  Known  as  red  masheer  grows  upto  100  cm  (Talwar  &  Jhingran  1991;  Menon  1999)

I  just  go  by  the  books..........  Very Happy

I  have  never  come  across  H  lithopidos  ,  H  pulchelles  which  is  also  reported  from  our  area.

You  know  what  is  strange.  .  .  .the  local  name  for  this  fish  is  'Khatladi',  In  Francis  day's  book  this  local  name  refers  to  H  pulchelles

It  could  be  H.  pulchellus  as  the  O.D  by  Day  says  31-32  lateral  line  scales.  Dark  scale  base  etc....

One  valid  point  that  I  would  say  makes  it  a  H.  thomassi  and  not  a  H.  pulchellus  is  that  H.  thomassi  has  2  1/2  scales  between  lateral  line  and  ventrals  whereas  H.  pulchellus  has  3  1/2  scales  between  lateral  line  and  ventrals.............your  fish  has  2  1/2  scales  Smile

One  more  thing  that  kicks  back  is  the  maximum  size  of  H.  pulchellus  is  17  inches  recorded  by  Day  and  44  cm  recorded  by  Menon  1999.  So  I  guess  it  is  a  relatively  smaller  fish  compared  to  the  ones  you  find  there.........

Does  anyone  have  a  picture  of  H  pulchellus????  .  .  .this  fish  joins  the  party

Anyway  till  things  are  clearer,  it  will  be  H  thomasii  for  now  till  the  fish  we  belived  was  H  thomasii  turns  up.

In  the  meantime  i  have  one  snap  for  you  guys  to  ponder  over?

The  first  fish  looks  similar  to  calbasu,  I  have  one. They  r  pretty  aggressive,  this  one  killed  the  other  three  in  the  tank,  two  breeding  pairs  of  kribs  when  it  was  only  2".  Good  algae  eater  and  mostly  stays  in  hideouts.

 I  guess  its  simple....

If  your  fish  has  one  pair  of  barbel  it  is  H.curmuca

If  your  fish  has  two  pairs  of  barbels  it  is  H.  kurali

You  gotta  tell  us..........  Very Happy

Can  we  start  a  similar  thread  for  Hypselobarbus?
 http://indianaquariumhobbyist.com/community/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=16054

I  haven't  updated  this  in  a  while  but  it  would  definitely  help  people  who  do  not  have  access  to  specific  papers.

 Beta.
If  possible,  why  not  we  have  a  separate  forum  for  it?   We  already  have  hillstreams  running  and  quite  a  few  threads  on  filamentosus  and  Schisturas.   Probably  we  can  have  a  forum  on  Native  Key  &  ID  and  put  each  Genera  or  a  Complex  in  a  thread.
