 Marc,

This  was  picked  up  from  an  LFS.  a  rarity  but  this  specific  LFS  always  seem  to  find  them  in  plenty.  Refuses  to  divulge  the  locations.  Initial  conversations  from  him  suggested  that  they  were  from  the  river  Kaveri  near  Mysore.

I  have  picked  up  many  a  dozen  fishes  from  him  for  a  lot  of  friends.  The  contaminants  along  with  this  are  usually  H  jerdoni  &  Barillius  sp

Will  search  for  pics  else  will  have  to  ask  Mr  H  to  do  the  honors

The  reason  I  am  so  interested  is  that  Srirangapatinam  is  on  the  cauvery  near  mysore.  The  fish  could  be  a  putative  topotype.......very  high  value  in  taxonomy  Chuckle

Have  quite  a  few  as  well  :-)

 1.  Channa  sp.  Assam,  Puntius  bimaculatus  and  crabs  and  shrimps  (as  feeders)
 2.  Channa  gachua
 3.  Channa  aurantimaculata
 4.  Puntius  filamentosus,  Garra  sp,  Mystus  vitattus,  Puntius  denisoni,  Puntius  fasciatus,  Rasbora  caverii,  Puntius  cf.  conchonius,  Barilius  bakeri,  Barilius  bedelisis,  Rohtee  ogilbi,  Aplocheilus  lineatus  (most  of  them  odd  ends  but  nonetheless  doing  very  well,  I  personally  would  call  it  a  fish  soup)
 5.  Puntius  punctatus,  Puntius  cf.  ticto  (maxes  out  at  1  inch),  Puntius  filamentosus  juvies,  Aplocheilus  panchax,  Ctenops  nobilis,  Acantobitis  botia,  Lepidocephalichtis  thermalis,  Mystus  canarensis,  Pterocryptis  wynaadensis  (all  Juveniles  and  small  sized,  waiting  for  them  to  grow  a  bit  and  stabilize  to  go  to  a  larger  tank)
 6.  Schistura  semiarmatus,  Schistura  nilgirensis,  Homaloptera  sp.,  Bhavania  australis  (I  guess  that's  the  only  one  you  can  call  a  proper  biotope)

PS:  Slightly  Off-topic:  Vyas,  I  still  have  three  of  the  Channa  sp.  Assam  from  you,  have  recently  put  them  together  with  wild  caught  ones,  which  Nikhil  got  me.  Chances  are  that  they  finally  start  pairing  up.  I  noticed  that  the  wild  ones  have  an  orange  red-rimmed  tail,  whereas  yours  are  entirly  white  rimmed.  Very  interesting  variety  :-)
 Cheers
 ben

Vyas,  have  to  second  that,  Barbs  create  a  feeding  frenzy  that  makes  it  difficult  for  the  Mystus  to  get  enough  food.  Normally  feed  them  at  night,  when  the  lights  are  off,  from  time  to  time  :-)

 Cheers

Sure  Vyas.  A  topotype  is  a  fish  collected  from  the  same  locality  as  the  fish  used  for  describing  that  species.  To  explain  it  clearer....Jerdon  collected  a  fish  at  Srirangapatinam  and  described  it  as  P.  arulius.  If  you  need  to  do  any  taxonomic  work  on  P.  arulius  you  need  to  check  out  the  fish  collected  by  Jerdon  which  is  the  holotype  and  in  case  there  is  no  holotype  available  you  need  to  go  to  Srirangapatinam  and  collect  from  there  because  thats  where  Jerdon  collected  his  fish.

Now  the  fish  you  collect  at  srirangapatinam  is  the  topotype  and  it  can  be  authentically  used  for  any  comparison  and  description  of  any  other  species  ressembling  it.

Pethiyagoda  and  Kottelat  2005  mention  that  P.  arulius  has  been  displaced  from  Srirangapatinam  and  has  gone  higher  up.  It  will  be  interesting  to  get  specimens  from  Mysore  as  that  is  very  close  to  srirangapatinam.

Your  fish  is  indeed  interesting..............  Thumb Up

Thanks  Hayath  for  sharing  the  photo  Thumb Up
