staying  in  mumbai  has  it  share  of  water  cuts  and  at  times  bad  quality  of  water  coming  from  its  taps.
just  two-three  weeks  ago  the  normal  BMC  water  was  murky.  and  on  top  of  that  my  building  watchmen  added  Potassium  permanganate  to  the  water.  because  of  this  i  couldn't  do  any  water  changes.(i  don't  know  if  it  harms  fishes  or  not  but  better  safe  then  sorry).
hence  this  question  popped  into  my  head
1)can  i  use  the  groundwater/hardwater  or  what  we  call  'boring  ka  pani'  for  freshwater  tank.
2)would  there  be  any  ph  problems
 3)  ground  water  has  excess  amounts  of  salts  and  minerals  what  are  the  effects  of  those  on  fishes  and  can  those  salts  be  neutralized.

sorry  for  this  noob  question  but  just  wanted  know  if  it  is  possible
mods  hope  this  thread  is  in  correct  section.

I  once  made  the  mistake  of  using  the  said  "boring  ka  pani"  since  by  the  time  I  removed  75%  of  my  tank  water  and  cleaned  it  the  municipal  tap  water  supply  stopped  and  I  was  sure  it  wont  be  starting  anytime  soon.  I  did  the  same  process  I  do  with  the  tap  water  i.e  use  de-chlorinating  agent  and  keep  water  for  5-10  mins  and  fill  the  tank.

Next  day  all  my  fish  were  either  sick  or  dead.

I  am  not  an  expert  on  water  parameters,  just  sharing  my  experience.

 EDIT:

If  possible  keep  a  large  barrel  filled  with  tap  water  1  week  prior  to  tank  cleaning.  That  way  you  have  stored  water  so  no  need  to  worry  about  supply  and  also  aging  the  water  is  supposed  to  be  better  than  using  agents.

I  stay  in  Chembur  -  Mumbai  &  I  do  partial  water  change  (25%)  using  borewell  water  for  my  6  footer  freshwater  tank.
 No  issues  so  far.   Smile

I  use  "boreing  ka  paani"  for  my  4ft  discus  tank  Razz  no  issues  so  far.....Touch  wood...  The  water  is  hard  but  I  have  no  choice.
I  got  to  know  that  there  is  some  kind  of  media  that  can  be  used  in  canister  filter  to  reduce  hardness,  but  till  day  no  one  was  able  to  tell  me  the  name  of  that  'some'  media.  I  also  doubt  it  as  only  method  i  know  to  reduce  hardness  is  only  by  reverse  osmosis  or  RO.
So  it  is  still  'some  kind'  of  media  though   ROFL

okay  still  i  don't  get  a  clear  picture  should  i  use  it  or  not?
mostly  i  would(if  necessary)  be  using  it  for  water  changes  i.e.  25%  to  50%.  is  it  safe  enough.  plus  this  water  is  not  treated  with  chlorine  so  no  use  of  adding  the  de-chlorine.

 Hi,

I  stay  in  Bangalore,  and  i've  used  borewell  water  some  times  (Without  adding  any  conditioner)  for  my  small  tank.  I  used  to  have  gold  fish  at  that  time.  Never  faced  any  problems  with  that.

But  the  hardness  of  bore  water  differs  from  place  to  place.  So  I  am  not  completely  sure  how  safe  it  is.
Wait  for  some  experts  to  comment.

 Regards,
 Kishore

Borewell  water  in  Mumbai  will  be  much  harder  then  the  municipal  water  .  The  hardness  of  this  borewell  water  also  differs  from  place  to  place  .

So  best  approach  is  to  check  the  hardness  of  water   .  You  can  check  this  with  TDS  meter  .  During  emergency  If  you   replace   10%  -  25%  of  the   municipal  water  with  borewell  water  ,  i  dont  think  it  will  make  much  difference  .  if  you  go  for  massive  WC  ,  you  need  to   check  the  hardness  first  .

 Thanks

I  shifted  to  thane  about  a  year  back  and  we  had  problems  with  municipal  water  supply  so  for  few  months  say  three  months  exactly  I  used  bore  well  water  for  Oscars  and  FH  ,  had  no  issues  then.  i  have  read  that  on  google  search  that  tertras  are  more  in  tolerable  fish  when  it  comes  to  bore  well  or  hard  water
In  thane  I  noticed  that  the  water  is  not  so  hard(used  soap  method  to  test)
most  of  the  LFS  in  mumbai  use  bore  well  water  they  have  no  choice.
But  in  a  long  run  its  quite  harm  full  for  FW  fishes  may  cause  problem  to  their  digestive  systems
@  ifish  water  softner  is  available  with  nautillus  if  you  wanna  try,  and  it  works

do  you  use  any  kind  of  water  softener  or  something  or  just  use  it  directly  out  of  the  tap

Well  all  my  fishes  are  raised  in  borewell  water,  and  they  are  all  thriving  great.  But  the  water  was  not  as  hard  infact  u  can  drink  it  straight  way.   I  shifted  to  another  location(In  Delhi  itself)  here  the  borewell  water  is  much  harder  as  compared  to  previous  location  but  till  now  no  water  issues.  Infact  i  heard  the  most  of  our  fish  keepers  uses  bore  well  water.  Its  good  for  fishes.  You  must  have  done  some  mistake  while  transferring  the  fishes  or  water  mixing.  Like  straight  way  shifting  fishes  into  new  water.  There  are  may  unknown  reasons  for  it.

no  problems  at  all  in  my  experience.  in  fact,  it  actually  helps  with  bigger  tanks  as  you  can  do  large  water  changes  without  having  to  dechlorinate  the  water.  but  you  must  first  check  the  hardness,  mineral  content  in  the  ground  water,  which  varies  from  place  to  place.

I  have  used  borewell  water  for  a  long  time,  without  any  problem.
However  do  not  make  large  changes  of  water,  I  normally  changed  20-25%  on  a  weekly  basis.
In  case  you  want  to  make  large  changes  of  water  you  will  have  to  match  the  water  parameters.

I  guess  a  large  wc  was  a  mistake  on  my  part.  But  it  would  be  better  to  test  the  water  before  switching  or  using  it  for  freshwater  fishes.
