PostPosted: Sun Mar 06, 2011 10:29 pm Post subject: 170 gallon tank collapsed PLEASE HELP Reply with quote

 Hello  friends,
Locally  we  dont  have  branded  tanks  so  I  normally  custom  make  it  through  a  LFS  here.

We  recently  built  a  90x18x24  tank  and  made  the  stand  and  canopy  etc.  Today  we  set  up  the  tank  on  the  stand  with  Styrofoam  between  the  tank  and  the  stand.  And  i  filled  up  the  tank  to  make  sure  it  wont  leak  etc.  I  left  around  2"  empty  on  the  top.  Within  5  minutes  after  filling  water  a  hairline  crack  started  forming  and  drops  of  water  came  out  right  in  the  center  of  the  tank.(bottom  to  top)  Then  slowly  drops  became  faster  and  i  sensed  it  was  gonna  blast.  So  i  gave  the  alarm  to  my  helper  to  move  aside.  As  we  started  stepping  aside  the  front  tank  gave  way  and  pieces  of  glasses  been  pushed  by  the  water  and  it  covered  up  4  rooms  in  few  minutes.

Now  we  all  are  trying  to  figure  out  what  went  wrong.  The  tank  maker  has  made  above  8  feet  long  tanks  before  and  he  did  built  quite  a  number  of  smaller  tanks  for  me.  I  checked  from  the  carpenter  and  we  checked  the  level  of  the  stand  and  found  out  that  the  center  front  part  and  right  front  of  the  stand  was  not  perfectly  flat.  But  we  did  use  Styrofoam  so  we  thought  that  should  take  care  of  the  level  foothold.

So  we  are  still  arguing  whose  fault  or  what  actually  went  wrong?

7.5  feet  long,  18  inches  width  and  24  inches  tall.  We  had  braces/support  glasses  3  in  the  bottom  and  3  on  the  top  also  we  had  aluminum  rims  all  over  the  tank.

What  could  have  caused  this?  Your  suggestions  and  inputs  would  be  highly  appreciated.  We  are  going  to  built  another  exact  same  size  tank  and  we  don't  want  this  to  happen  again.

 Please  help.  Thanks
 Lima

What  was  the  glass  thickness?  The  unevenness  of  the  stand  could  have  been  a  major  factor,  especially  since  it  cracked  in  the  center  and  the  stand  was  uneven  at  the  center.

Pradeep  we  get  only  8mm  thickness  here  in  Nagaland.  I  wanted  to  go  for  10  or  12mm  but  they  said  it  will  take  time  since  they  have  to  special  order.  But  according  to  the  tank  maker  here  he  claims  they  have  made  quite  a  lot  of  8  feet  long  tanks  with  8mm.  I  also  called  a  friends  shop  in  Guwahati  and  he  also  mentioned  8mm  is  ok  even  for  a  8  feet  long  tank.

Dont  know  what  to  do  now.

The  thickness  of  your  glass  should  be  12mm  with  atleast  2braces.  Try  the  calculator  below  before  attempting  to  make  a  new  one.
 Hope  this  helps   Smile

8mm  is  seriously  risky..  you  can  try  reducing  the  height  as  lesser  the  height  lesser  the  pressure.  but  still  its  a  risk..

Though  not  a  expert  on  these  ,  still  my  opinions  are  ...

 #  as  already  suggested  thickness  of  the  glass  is  very  important.  I  have  a  4ft  long  tank  and  i  used  12mm(though  out  of  calculations,  only  10mm  was  required.  But  i  used  2mm  extra  as  this  was  my  first  big  tank)
#Because  of  the  strong  joints  at  edges,  the  most  vulnerable  point  with  heavy  pressure  would  be  on  the  front  and  back  panels  and  in  the  center.

 #  For  the  base,  i  used  a  black  rubbery  foam  which  looked  promising  (1inch  thick).  Consider  the  base  material  also  and  its  thickness  too

 #  If  tank  is  too  big,  you  can  use  few  additional  glass  piece  joints  on  top(tough  this  spoil  your  top  view  if  you  have  a  open  type  tank)

 dear  friend  check  this  out
 http://www.theaquatools.com/building-your-aquarium
even  with  a  safety  2.5  safety  factor  your  require  glass  thickness  of  10mm  which  is  the  min.  usually  for  this  long  tank  one  should  go  with  safety  factor  of  3.5  atleast.
I'll  suggest  you  go  with  12  mm  glass  for  your  next  construction.

Better  you  wait  for  the  right  thickness  of  glass  and  get  the  job  done  else  you  would  be  spending  sleepless  nights  counting  each  minute  of  uncertainty  of  tank  break  and  its  hazardous

8mm  glass  for  a  tank  of  that  length  and  height  is  a  disaster  in  the  making.
