 nice  collection  nikhil  Thumb Up
are  all  those  gachua  variants  like  the  blue  cheek  etc  valid?  i  always  thought  they  were  just  fancy  names  given  by  dealers.
i  have  kept  some  of  the  variants  and  must  say  there  are  a  lot  of  differences  in  colour, but  less  in  other  morphological  features

 Hi  Hrish,

The  fish  are  marked  with  names  and  locations  only  when  I  see  something  unusual  in  the  fish.  It  helps  me  keep  a  better  track  of  the  fish.  Like  the  Channa  sp.  'Blue  Cheek'  has  much  more  blue  and  orange  than  any  Channa  I  have  collected  before.

 Marc,

Some  Channa  from  Bengal  often  go  by  the  trade  name  of  Channa  gachua  'Blue  Bengal'  at  least  in  Germany.  The  blue  cheek,  is  unusual  in  a  way  that,  opposite  to  what  the  name  suggests  has  a  lot  of  orange  on  the  cheeks  and  on  the  throat,  a  feature  that  I  have  not  seen  in  gachua  before.  Hence  red  cheek  might  be  the  more  valid  'trade  name'  if  we  are  going  that  way.

I  believe  there  is  a  lot  of  discussion  going  on  regarding  Channa  gachua  /  limbata,  unless  people  look  into  DNA,  I  guess  we  have  to  keep  the  trade  names,  e.g.  localities  to  separate  the  strains.

Nothing  worse  than  hybridizing  the  local  strains  and  ending  up  with  some  Thai-India-Malaysia-Burma-wherever  Channa  gachua.  Happened  a  lot  already  and  people,  not  only  in  Europe,  are  quite  confused  :-)

Do  you  have  a  pic  of  the  Chennai  gachuas?

 Thanks  and  regards
 ben

Ah,  and  one  more  thing,  did  anybody  also  notice  the  'general'  difference  between  gachuas  from  streams  and  rivers  and  those  of  ponds?

Ponds  have  normally  much  more  colourful  varieties.

The  head  form  really  differs:  Pond  variety  very  roundish  head,  tadpole  looks.  Rivers:  elongated  head  and  slimmer  body  shape.

That's  what  I  noticed,  not  sure  if  it  is  relevant  though,  hahaha.

 Cheers

That  is  the  C.  gachua  from  Chembarampakkam  (Chennai).  I  feel  this  could  be  a  secondary  sexual  character.

It  was  interesting  to  observe  this  brilliant  blue  colour  in  C.  gachua  so  I  got  a  set  from  Bengal.  Of  the  eight  I  got  from  bengal  to  compare,  one  had  a  brilliant  blue  cheek  and  the  rest  were  ordinary  coloured  ones.

So  I  feel  colour  is  highly  variable   Smile

 Marc,

colour  indeed  is  very  highly  variable.  I  noticed  that  it  takes  them  at  least  a  few  days  in  a  new  aquarium  to  settle  in  and  then  show  truly  amazing  colour.  Preetham  had  some  beuatiful  Channa  from  I  think  Hoggenakal,  when  we  caught  them  they  were  just  a  pale  brown.  The  guy  he  showed  me  in  his  tank  a  few  month  later  was  a  steel-blue  dream.

Plus  if  you  have  more  than  one  there  will  always  be  the  suppressed  one  who  do  not  colour  up  much,  but  you  would  have  noticed  that.
Colour  is  not  an  indicator  for  the  species  or  locality,  but  some  populations  have  rather  unique  patterns,  e.g.  there  is  a  variety  called  sunglasses  which  has  some  green  spot  on  the  eye.  The  blue  cheeks  that  nikhil  posted  show  the  intense  red  even  when  stressed  and  are  therefore  somewhat  unusual.

Let's  hop  the  DNA  analysis  out  soon.  We  would  still  be  confused  afterwards,  but  there  would  be  some  clarity  at  least  on  the  paper  :)

 Cheers
 ben
