PostPosted: Sun Mar 13, 2011 4:46 pm Post subject: Authentic Volcanic Soil Substrate Reply with quote

I  have  always  wanted  to  use  a  dark  colored  natural  substrate,  and  over  the  years  I  have  experimented  with  a  number  of  them.
There  is  no  product  that  can  beat  natural  susbtrate  for  plant  growth.
The  laterite  granules  reddish  in  color  was  one  option  which  is  awesome,
and  my  two  tanks  running  with  the  substrate  even  after  massive  neglect  over  the  last  6-9  months  have  reinforced  my  conviction.
Now,  I  have  always  wanted  to  use  Natural  &  Authentic  volcanic  soil  as  a  substrate  for  planted  tanks,  as  the  substrate  is  black,
and  after  years  of  procrastination  I  took  the  plunge  and  got  enough  of  it  to  set  up  2  small  tanks.

Today  being  a  boring  Sunday,  I  started  off  on  the  tanks.
Here's  one  which  is  still  in  the  visualisation  stage.  More  on  these  tanks  as  I  work  on  them.
This  is  a  bad  Pic,  for  now.

I'll  post  updates  as  and  when  I  make  progress.

I  was  about  to  ask  you  when  you  are  going  to  start  off  the  tank,  and  here  it  is.  The  substrate  is  looking  awesome.

 FINALLY!!!   Chuckle

The  substrate  looks  good,  Is  it  available  locally  ?  Im  sure  it  would  work  as  a  fantastic  Bio  Filter  media  in  a  canister  filter   Smile

I  am  in  love  with  that  substrate,  where  did  you  find  that?  You  never  cease  to  amaze  us....packed  with  goodies  and  naturally  baked  to  perfection.

I  request  you  not  to  leave  these  journals  incomplete  like  a  few  others  in  the  past.

 Goodluck!

Tirtha,  I  still  don't  have  the  time  to  set  up  the  tank,  lot's  of  niggling  work,  but  started  anyway.  It'll  be  a  couple  of  weeks  before  I  start  planting.

Seetharam,  It's  not  available  locally,  but  can  be  shipped  in.  Shipping  kills.  You  cannot  use  it  as  filter  media.  May  be  you  can  but  after  lots  and  lots  of  cleaning.

Hamza,  Nature's  baking  process  or  should  I  say  the  Rate  of  cooling  process  is  awesome.  The  individual  grains  are  porous  !  They  are  at  a  stage  where  they  haven't  turned  to  pumice,  so  they  remain  sunk  and  don't  float.  A  handful  of  the  grains  float  when  water  is  added  to  the  tank,  but  that's  nothing.
The  best  part  is  they  have  immense  amount  of  nutrients  well  bound  within  the  substrate.

Here's  the  Link,  beware  shipping  kills

BTW  I  used  about  1.25  X   standard  shipping  box  for  a  2  x  18  foot  print  tank,  and  I  have  a  decent  3"-4"  depth  at  the  back.

 Great,  Madan  Clapping

One  of  the  most  nutrient  rich  and  fertile  soils  are  the  weathered  lava  and  ash  from  Volcanoes.
 Will  eagerly  follow  this  thread.

 Regards,
