 Hi  guys

Having  tried  my  luck  with  Microworms,  and  having  met  with  some  success,  I  now  wish  to  know  about  Infusoria.

 1.  How  does  one  cultivate  this  ?
 2.  How  good  is  this  as  a  feed  ?
 3.  Any  precautions  ?

 Regards

 Suby

 1.  Infusoria  can  be  easily  cultured  if  you  provide  them  with  a  source  of  decomposing  organic  matter.  The  easiest  way  IME  is  to  take  a  wide  mouthed  glass  jar,  fill  it  with  water  drawn  from  one  of  your  tanks,  add  a  pinch  of  oatmeal  and  a  couple  of  split,  dried  peas.  Place  the  jar  in  a  cool,  dark  place  and  you  will  have  a  thriving  culture  in  a  week  or  so.  Be  aware  that  the  culture  has  a  rather  strong  odour.

You  can  also  strain  greenwater  from  a  pond  and  place  it  in  a  jar  where  it  gets  lot  of  light.

 2.  Infusoria  are  great  for  raising  very  small  fry;  like  rainbowfish,  tetras,  barbs  and  anabantoids.

 3.  Make  sure  the  culture  does  not  go  bad.  Sub-culture  every  2  weeks  or  so.  If  you  use  greenwater,  make  sure  you  do  not  introduce  any  predators  with  it.

 1.  When  would  the  culture  go  bad?  Is  it  in  terms  of  days??

 2.  Sub-culture??  Does  it  mean  starting  a  new  culture  again??

 3.  How  to  feed  the  fish  with  Infosuria??  Turkey  Baster??  If  so  where  could  we  get  a  Turkey  Baster?

Subculture  means  to  start  a  new  culture  using  about  1/4  old  culture+3/4  fresh,  dechlorinated  water.

How  soon  the  culture  goes  bad  depends  on  a  number  of  factors...  My  cultures  in  Bombay  would  start  dropping  in  productivity  after  about  2  weeks.  They  last  longer  here  but,  it  is  cooler.

The  best  way  to  feed  the  fish  is  to  pour  about  half  the  culture  into  a  bottle  with  a  narrow  neck,  all  the  way  to  the  brim  (a  squash  bottle  worked  for  me)  Now  push  a  piece  of  sponge  or  a  ball  of  cotton  wool  down  the  neck  of  the  bottle  till  there  is  about  an  inch  of  space  above  the  sponge.  Pipette  out  any  culture  water  above  the  sponge  with  an  ink  dropper  and  pour  in  clean  water.  The  infusoria  will  migrate  through  the  sponge  and  collect  on  top  in  a  couple  of  hours,  use  the  dropper  to  feed  your  fish  and  pour  the  culture  back  into  its  bottle.

If  you're  culturing  in  green  water  and  the  culture  is  very  dense,  you  can  just  pour  a  cupful  into  the  tank  and  top  off  the  bottle  a  few  times  every  day.

@Ravindranak,  some  infusoria  are  large  enough  to  be  seen  with  the  naked  eye.
