Hi Archh,
Can you comment on this please-
Instead of cool air, if we are blowing hot air, shouldnt it solve the issue of evaporating even in Humid weathers?
Also as per convectional currents it ll not boil the tank.
Thank you. |

@ Saikumar..
Blowing hot air would help in evaporation, but the heat needed for evaporation will be taken by the hot air and not the water hence there will be no cooling, on the contrary it will further heat the water.
BTW Where did u read this?? |

Then will you face the same issue even when you cool?
I suppose water is better conductor of heat than air, so water would absorb heat better?(hence evaporates)

I guess according to heat convention, heating water from surface is a bad idea- isnt it?(evaporates, so heat not passed on) So will it still be a concern?
Or else the lakes beside my home should have disappeared- instead fish are still live, and water is cool.
Cheers! |

@ Saikumar..
In this case we are not depending on evaporative cooling, but it would work pretty much in the same principle i.e. thermal convection..
The setup would constantly blow cold air, water on the top layer will cool down and move below allowing the bottom layer which is now warmer than the top layer to move up, once this new layer has cooled down it will again move down and allow the bottom layer to move up...this process will go on till all the 'layers' of water in the tank attain a constant temperature, this of course will not happen due to external sources of heat such as lights and room temp air which is in contact with the surface.
The heat absorbed by the external source will ensure that the process keeps going on and water temp does not reach a point of equilibrium, so we can assume that a temperature drop of a few degrees is possible using a sufficiently strong fan or a series of fans and an efficient funnel design.
the lakes you are talking about have millions of litres of water so it will take a considerable amount of time for the upper layer to get heated and evaporate, the level will go down for sure.Smaller lakes and ponds sometimes dry up completely during summers.
Also lakes and other water bodies are connected to Aquifer i.e. the water table, the source of water to lakes and ponds are rain water, surface run off water, and the water from the water table below the ground, so whatever water is evaporates is replenished and hence the lakes have a considerable amount of water even by the end of summers. |

Thanks for your help.
your name please?
Your idea to cool is sounding nice. Just wanted to check if the hot air method would work.
Good luck. |

No Saurabh,
not that musi fed lake. But the kapra lake. Shamirpet lake is one more.
Well fortunately i can test. But don't have equipment. Here its not very humid either. So thought to hint you. |

Sure do that, i will also start with it soon....lets hope it works
You are lucky to have so many lakes in your city, all the rivers and streams in mumbai have been converted into drains |

It does prove one thing, seek knowledge irrespective of what it is for and or from whom |

good idea.. but we can do 2 more things to improve its performance
1. Seal the gap between fan and funnel.
2. Air expands really fast when exposed to open, for such small setup temperature decrease of air from the funnel would not be very much. also Exchange of heat between air and water is much less than that of between compressed air and air in 1 atm. So we need a custom funnel.. something like a spiral funnel. So compression ration can be made higher. and the expansion zone should not be open air. if that can be made under water like two spiral funnels added back to back through the narrow end and the second funnel is semi submerged. Btw the funnels should be metalic as well.. will try this out once i start the hobby again |

thanks mithunda, will keep these things in mind.
but dont u think the funnel submerged in water will cause surface agitation and loss of co2. |
