 hi  guys,
 I  am  planning  for  a  nano  shrimp  tank  (18  *  12  *  12).
Substrate  =  Aqua  clay  (red  color)
plants  =  java  fern,  anubeas,  java  moss  and  glossostigma  with  pressurized  Co2.
Filter  =  ?  (sponge  filter  or  external  filter)
 lighting  =  ?
Shrimps  =  Planning  for  red  cherry  (30  nos)  and  a  few  CRS  (6  nos)

Please  suggest  me  which  filter  should  i  use  and  the  lighting..
 Waiting  for  your  valuable  responses...

 Thanks,
 Nandy

 Hi  Nandy,
 Substrate,  plants  are  great.
For  filtration  you  can  use  corner  filter  or  a  hang  on  back  filter.  If  you  are  using  the  2nd  option  dont  forget  to  tie  the  filter  inlet  with  a  mosquito  net  or  sponge.
Lightning  use  cfl  or  anything  equivalent.  I  would  prefer  a  LED  setup  because  it  wont  increase  the  temperature  which  is  essential  for  shrimps  whereas  other  lights  increase  the  temp.

 ALL  THE  BEST  Smile

You  should  go  for  a  sponge  filter.Imo  small  shrimplets  can  get  sucked  in  any  sort  of  power  filter.
Also  i  hope  you've  done  your  homework  on  CRS  before  getting  them, they  can  be  very  demanding(and  costly)  to  experiment.

You  would  require  a  dark  substrate  for  your  shrimps  to  show  good  colors  and  moreover,  aqua  clay  is  not  rich  in  nutrients.  Hence,  glosso  is  not  a  good  option.

Rony  experienced  hobbyist  around  the  globe  had  done  co2  and  shrimp  tank  but  I  would  say  its  not  for  novices  and  require  too  much  dedication  and  hard  work,  I  suppose  seetharam  has  done  co2  and  crs  tank.

Why  is  C02  a  bad  idea?
Is  it  because  it  increases  Ph?

Its  decreases  the  PH  value  and  in  the  night  when  the  plants  release  co2  the  ph  value  decreases  and  add  to  it  the  ph  dropped  by  the  co2  release-  if  you  have  co2  on  24*7

If  you  are  using  co2  for  a  particular  time  period  such  as  4  hours  your  ph  will  increase  or  tend  to  increase  in  the  remaining  20  hours  so  that  is  a  issue  with  expensive  inverts.

CO2  is  not  a  bad  idea.  using  a  sponge  filter  in  a  CO2  injected  tank  is  a  bad  idea.  i  have  kept  RCS  in  a  high  CO2  tank.

for  substrate,  i  would  recommend  ADA  Aquasoil  and  if  you  want  to  grow  glossostigma,  you  will  need  around  60-70W  of  lighting  i  think.

about  filter,  i  think  a  HOB  should  work  fine.  external  canister  filter  will  be  the  best  option.

I  know  of  one  of  the  hobbyist  whose  aquarium  is  talked  abt.in  serious  planted  aquarium  forums.
This  guy  had  abt.500  CRS  in  a  well  planted,  fertilized,  well  balanced  Co2  tanks  for  more  than  3  yrs.
One  evening  he  came  home  and  found  CRS  dead.  His  tank  was  abt.400  lts  since  then  this  guy  doesn't  touch  CRS.

The  reason  for  deaths  being  CO2  something  went  wrong  n  killed  the  entire  CRS  population.  He  did  not  make  any
change  or  touch  the  CRS.  Call  it  an  accident  or  bad  luck  but  such  things  do  happen  eve  to  a  very  experienced  hobbyist.
There  I  can  advice  if  possible  avoid  using  CO2  in  shrimp  tanks.  Use  undemanding  plants  n  moss  in  a  shrimp  tank.

the  best  thing  is  to  keep  co2  24/7  on  at  a  very  very  low  rate,  its  safer  than  using  solnoid  or  turning  it  on  off.
