My name is Rajesh Menon from Thane Mumbai, working as a Project Manager for a leading software company in India. Right from my childhood I had craze for aquarium tanks as an amateur have been maintaining variety of fishes and aquarium plants.
Recently, 1 year back I upgraded to a 4 ft tank, with C02 fittings, planted. I have 2 set pairs of black marble angles, 4 Red Map Discus 3 – 4 inches, 2 Blue Diamond of 3 – 4 inches.
Currently I am struggling to keep healthy plants and maintain clean soil. Even after having 2 filters one over head and one installed inside the tank and with one 4 ft tube light giving 8 to 10 hours light .
I have been following the IAH forum for quite some time, hunting for advice, knowledge in the vast number of posts already available. Needless to say, whatever I have been looking for was already available within the forum, hence did not feel the need to post any queries of my own. However, there is a start to everything and hence introducing myself (been anonymous for almost 2 years here!! ).
My name is Aniruddha and am originally from Kolkata, currently settled in Hyderabad for nearly 6 years. My aquarium hobby started in 1988, with regular visits to the then hub of Kolkata called Hathibagan (fondly known in other places as the Elaphant Market!!)
At the start of my career, as an aspiring entrepreneur, I along with a very close friend of mine embarked on designing and manufacturing a submersible aquarium filter which runs on 12volts. The product USP being, in the event of a short circuit, the aquarium owner will not get the shock of him/her life . However, with little or no knowledge and lack of proper guidance, people duped us young kids, and we shifted focus to other fields We did maintain a 4ft tank in our then workshop from 1995, and kudos to my friend, he still is maintaining it - all of 16 years!! My hobby had a break in between, with life moving on and the eventual relocation to Hyderabad. Since the past two years however, I have rekindled the passion and initially started with a 48in x 18in x 18in african cichlid tank.
Recently shifted to our own house and replaced the 4 footer with a 60in x 24in x 18in tank. Doing this up as a planted discus tank. Will be visiting Dev porbably in sometime(he operated from too far away - going to his place is nearly an excursion from where I stay).
Well, recently I have also commenced on another aquarium related venture, this time well prepared and probably a bit more dope on the knowledge front (my dad still might say I have cow dung in my head!!). Just completed construction of a breeding farm in Hyderabad and currently started with rearing.
I am sure I will have a wonderful time here, sharing and gathering knowledge on our common interest and passion with you all. My other interests are in wildlife photography, massive road trips and evening adda
Would love to meetup with the local gang to start with....
Welcome to IAH!
Really felt nostalgic when you mentioned Hatibagan in your post!
So many of us are really indebted to that place for our aquatic startups. That was the Galiff of yesteryears when we roamed about those makeshift stalls dreaming about days when we would be able to afford those discus, featherfish and litchie goldfishes.
Well here we are now, where they all seem to be relatively affordable!
Wishing you all the best with the planted discus project for which we all will be looking forward to!
I have had 6 aquariums (plus 1 ~150ltrs plant tank) nearly 20 years ago. Then education and travelling cut it down to one (36"X12"X18"), which my brother has in which he has a couple of Koi's and a couple of suckers.
Recently thanks to my daughters interest in fish, I ended up taking out one of my old tanks a 24"X12"X12" and putting a few fish in it - some guppies, tetras and gold fish.
This setup is a low maintenance setup, with river sand and a few plants in it.
The old top was damaged and I have temporarily put on a reading lamp for tank illumination (with a CFL in it)
I was also interested in shrimps and have made a seperate Shrimp tank. I had a glass vase whcih now has some sand, plants, 4 Cherry reds and 4 wood shrimps.
I also have ended up putting a 10" bowl in my office which has 4 wood shrimps and some plants.
Will take some pics soon and start a seperate thread(s) on my setups.
