|

So I've just finished setting up my second tank and its cycling right now. Its a low-tech planted tank (no co2). substrate is solely controsoil. Its going to house mainly shrimps, cardinal tetras, and otos.
Now the question ... do I introduce any snails in this tank?
There is the prospect of them being helpful in cleaning the tank ... as opposed to them eating away plants.
I did some reading and seem to get the general opinion that the trumpet snails are good. however the opinions of the remaining snails is mixed. so i would like someone with practical experience to guide me please.
I do know that apple snails are a big no no. i lost a lot of good plants in my other tank due to those voracious eaters.
Here is a good pic on the snail types for reference ...
I would mainly like a review on ramshorns, pond snails, and malaysian trumpets.
Also ... which snails would you recommend to keep, if at all, in my setup (as mentioned on the top)?
Thanks a lot!

pond snails are prolific breeders,as well as Ramshorn snails.Even apple snails breed fast, but nthing compared to those two.
I have a few ramshorn snails in my tank, and they do not even touch the plants, keeping lots of algae away, how ever they do not touch Hair algae.
Pond snails eat anything, even the bits of fishfood, and new plant shoots.
I dont have trumpet snails, though there was one in my tank, but ive not seen him from a few weeks,he does pop up sometimes, but that dosnt count as experience
He is la Mystery snail now |

Trumpet snails will keep the substrate turned over and will help negate H2S build up. Breeds fast though and needs to be controlled by manual removal.
Warm regards.

Malaysian Trumpet snail to overturn n mix your aquarium soil. Nerite snail to eat algae from glass.
If u can try for to buy 1 Bridgesi Apple snail it eats all the left overs do not touch plants or moss. |

i've seen images of those snails. look pretty cool. any particular reason why u favor them against the others? Is it because they reproduce only in brackish water, so their population doesn't increase in a freshwater setup?
And what's your opinion on trumpet snails?

I'm talking abt.Bridgesi Apple snails n believe me I've rare plants I have 18 types of crypts. 9 types of moss n they never touched the plants till date.
U can check the pictures in my CRS thread the ones in the pictures r Bridgesi Apple Snails not the regular apple snails there's a difference.
BTW Nofar Japonica plant is a very beautiful, rare n expensive plant. I dont have it because its used in big aquariums mine r nano aquariums. |
